BasketballGuru24ParticipantJoe Smith has agreed to a one-year deal with the Atlanta Hawks for the veteran’s minimum, a source told ESPN’s Ric Bucher on Friday.
Smith, a 6-foot-10, 225-pound center, is a 14-year veteran. He was picked No.1 overall by the Golden State Warriors in 1995 and has played for nine teams.
Smith picked Atlanta over Cleveland Cavaliers, where here played last season and which was offering the same deal.
Smith averaged 10.8 points and 5.5 rebounds with the Cavs in their first round sweep of the Detroit Pistons. He has career averages of 11.6 points and 6.7 rebounds a game.

MagikKnickParticipantA number one pick on his 10th team, damn…good signing though
PG: Mike Bibby/Jeff Teague
SG: Joe Johnson/Jamaul Crawford
SF: Marvin Williams/Mo Evans
PF: Josh Smith/Joe Smith
C: Al Horford/Zaza PachuliaIs that what they’re gonna do?
I think all they need is a legit Center, put Horford at the 4, Josh at the 3, and Marvin on the bench, then they’d have a super strong bench, and could be a legit sleeper0 - Posted on: Sat, 08/15/2009 - 6:52am #201039

adjose5Participantas I said in the other “Joe Smith” post, I love the deal for ATL…gives them depth in the front court and leadership. MagikKnick hit it right on the head, they need a legit center, move Horford to the 4, J Smoove to the 3 and Marvin off the bench. but for now, I like the move, I think this helps solidifies them as a top 5 team in the East, hopefully they can get homecourt as the 4th seed again. I wonder if they’ll sign another veteran PG to be the 3rd guard and help mentor Teague

billykParticipantI dont think Josh Smith can play SF on a consistent basis in the NBA he is too limited… He is a poor shooter, his handles is below average, and he is poor passer… I think he is best of playing at the 4…

gatorheelsParticipantPretty good signing….they had to get another big man because they lacked depth in the post. Still I don’t think their bench is anything special…it is solid though…good not great.
billyk- I agree with what you said except I think Josh Smith would be great playing SF….IF he developed a consistent jumpshot which is a big IF

marcusfizer21ParticipantOh well, so much for another shot at CLE. But anyways, I love Joe Smith as a consumate professional and a solid role player off the bench. Nevermind that he will never live up to the number 1 pick status, the fact that he had a solid career and is well-liked by all teams he had gone through is good enough to conclude for me that he wil fit well with the ATLiens this season. Joe will bring a nice mid-range game and a nice rebounding skills to the already talented Hawks squad. This will be interesting to see about Average Joe… Man, his 10th team? That’s a journey…
