blackflash234Participant“Joe Johnson has agreed to terms with the Hawks on a maximum-salary contract.
Johnson had reportedly been hesitant to accept the deal and the Knicks were one team that unsuccessfully tried to change his mind.
Johnson’s new contract will be six years in length.”
No exact information on how much the contract will be worth but I’m guessing it’s for 6 years for 120 million guranteed money. The Hawks really do care about winning and don’t want to take a step back. Good for them and their franchise.

scoutguruParticipantHey at least you can book em for 50 wins per the next couple seasons in ATL. Hopefully they can add a center and get lucky one year and make it to the conference finals.

OldSkoolBasketballParticipantthis really sucks for the Knicks. They lose another player they thought they could’ve sign before this started.

BothTeamsPlayedHardParticipantPeople can slam the deal, but if Atlanta lost him where would they be? Golden State didn’t want to overpay Baron Davis or Jason Richardson, and look where it got them. Teams don’t ruin themselves paying elite talents. This isn’t throwing money at David Lee or someone else who has never sniffed the playoffs. Johnson made this team relevant. The Hawks probably won’t win a title. They need something crazy like Jordan Crawford becoming a superstar to happen, but it keeps the team from playing in front of family and friends. Atlanta doesn’t watch lottery teams. It makes much more sense for the Hawks to assure their being decent by giving Johnson the fat deal, and sell off Marvin Williams and maybe Zaza or Bibby to make ends meet. Paying those guys close to $17 million is a far bigger problem than paying Joe Johnson $20 million. A decent GM should be able to find guys like Williams, a washed up Bibby, and Zaza for significantly less than what Atlanta is doing.
