I remember when this guy was in HS, he was supposed to be the truth and be 2 and done.

Now he’s heading into his JR year and guards rated lower than him in HS (Aaron Craft, Shabazz Napier, Ian Miller,  Ray McCallum, Keith Appling, Lorenzo Brown, Kendall Marshall, Ryan Harrow) are now looking like they will be drafted before him.

2 years is alot of time, do you think he still can make it?

Can he? Absolutely. But he’s had issues with his role at Memphis, as well as with being there in general. There was talk of him transferring in the middle of last season and he’s had to share the PG role with A. Barton and been forced to play a lot of the 2 as well so it hasn’t been a dream situation for him.

This will be a big year for him now that Will Barton has left a big scoring void (Witherspoon is gone too) and someone needs to step up. If it is him, scouts will take notice and he can be a guy who sneaks into the 1st, especially because he has elite quickness, good scoring ability, plays fantastic defense and I’ve always thought size at the PG is an overrated trait.

Joe is a terribly small scoring point who has nice potential, but at the moment isn’t very good at scoring IMO. Nor can he resemble quarterbacking a team. With his near elite level explosiveness and athleticism, should be dominatiing guys Iso but for some reason still fails to consistently break a defense down.

I don’t think it’s going to be a much better season for Jackson. First off, I’ve seen him listed at 6 feet. That is false, he is 5’10" at best basing it off I’m 5’8 and I have walked past him. Second, like was said, he shares the PG position. Not only that, they have another guard(Crawford) who is a 2 but he gets the ball and creates a lot. He isn’t much of a shooter either. He is insanely fast, quick and can jump though. He can make it but he just kind of is the player he is at Memphis.

I’ve seen worse players drafted.  If Peyton Siva gets drafted this year then that gives hope for Joe Jackson down the line.  Jackson’s problem is that he’s still clueless as to how to run a team.  He’s a poor decision maker all-around. His shot selection, picking his spots when to drive, distributing the ball, running plays, etc. Even in Memphis’ uptempo style, which, you would think would cater towards his strengths, he struggles making the right plays.  Also, his greatest asset, his quickness off the bounce, could be nullified by his lack of size and strength to finish.

That’s the thing with little PG’s or PG’s in general, some guys think size shouldn’t determine a PG’s potential, when in reality you need some size/strength to be effective.

Joe Jackson is 5’10 155 pounds and while he’s quick as lightning what good is it if he can’t finish in the lane, or easily gets knocked off balance while attacking? Im not saying beef up like Eric Bledsoe but I think at Joe Jackson’s height(5-10) he should be no less than 175 pounds, and who’s to say getting stronger would slow him down? He could get even quicker/more explosive by getting stronger.

I don’t know if there was ever a bunch of people who thought he was going to come in and be a one and done. He dominated the HS level, like many kids have done before and after himwill do, but just don’t project as superstars on the collegiate level or are good enough to enter the pro ranks. His problem like many have noted is just his inability to consistently make good basketball plays. He isn’t an efficient or great scorer and he isn’t a good facilitator for others in the half court. So you combine those factors and things don’t bode well for him. At least Peyton Siva, even with his up and down erratic play at times, is a pretty good point guard who is gonna find guys, make plays in transition and excel in the drive and kick game to open shooters, combined with his elite speed.

Joe’s only hope for the next level is to become a drastically improved playmaking point guard who uses his speed to break down defenses. Or to become an elite level scorer at the college level like a kemba walker who gets to the line at a high rate and averages well over 20 points a game. That way he’d find a role as like an earl boykins sparkplug off a bunch. Odds are against him though with his size and what he’s showed thus far, but he still has two years off ball left. He should become good enough to get paid playing ball somewhere though.

Jackson is a legit 6’0 with shoes on. I’m 5’11 and have stood next to him several times, and he is at least an inch taller than me. I honestly have no idea why some of you think he is 5’10. You are either are horrible at measuring height or he has grown lately.

As far as him being an NBA prospect, I could definitely see him making it to the league. I’m not sure he will ever be a starter, but he could definitely be a spark off the bench. He might be the fastest player in college basketball, and every team in the league could use a player with his speed. His struggles haven’t been because of talent. At times, he looked like he was the best player for Memphis last year. His main problems have been because of confidence. At times he would just try to hard to be a pure PG and when he did he would either turn the ball over or just  disappear. This year he should be the first option with Barton gone, and that will help him a lot imo. He is at his best when he is scoring and with him now likely being the go to man, his confidence should go up. I wouldn’t be surprised if he has a huge breakout year this year.

Playing in his hometown has him under alot of pressure..He was a local legend in high school and Alot of folks in Memphis pegged him a superstar and future pro before he even played a college game..

Last year he talked about transfering..I think that would’ve done him some good..To get away and start over…Away from family and friends constantly talking about him making millions .

There have been alot of small scoring point guards, that have succeeded in both college and the pros…But Jackson looks confused on the floor…

I think another issue he has had is the fact of him being on a team where he isn’t the clear cut best player. The team doesn’t need him to play like Iverson or however he did in HS. This isn’t uncommon for young ball dominant scoring poing guards like Jackson though. Hopefully now as an upperclassman his efficiency and ability to be part of the team concept improves.
