TRC1991ParticipantI legitimately thought Joe Harris could be a solid rotation player at the next level but I’m watching a replay of the Cavs n Mavs right now and Harris is awful. He misses every shot he takes and he’s incompetent trying to create off the dribble. Pair these things with his propensity to commit turnovers on a consistent basis and what you get is a very bad basketball player.
jared Cunningham and Austin daye look good.
as I type this Harris bricks a jumper

Jr. ROXASParticipantI still can’t believe he was selected early second round.. Was he really that good in Virginia?? Anyway, Cunningham looks GREAT. I honestly thought he did well last pre-season with the Clips and thought he’d be on their rotation. Cavs got a really solid rotational player here. Can defend, shoot and handle the ball.

ChewyParticipantseems to not translate well when the player is overmatched physically. JJ Redick took like 5 years before he became a rotation player. Korver only hit under 40 3’s in his rookie year. Morrison was… well you know.
I think the game is moving to fast for Joe to do what he did in college (where he seemed slow even in the NCAA). I still feel maybe in another 2-3 years he could learn to adjust his game to the increased pace and physicality and be a solid role player. And ROXAS- Yes, he was REALLY good at UV. But he relied on being able to hold off smaller defenders on his drives to the hoops. That is almost completly negated by NBA defenders, so he is relegated to just a spot up shooter.
Speaking of UV, I’m interested to see how Justin Anderson does. he certaintly is physically gifted enough to compete in the league. Was his hot streak shooting season a fluke, or is he a legit 3 and D from day one?

TarHeelRavenParticipantI loved Joe Harris at UVA. Of course he was really slow and not very athletic, but he was tough as nails. I don’t understand why he ever would try to create off the dribble because he never did that at Virginia. He just ran of screens. He’s not an NBA athlete and the only way he can contribute is by being a spot up jump shooter. If he’s not hitting jumpers, he’s pretty much useless to any team.

T RexJustin Anderson is shooting like 17% from 3 in the preseason, not that I’m reading too much into it.
There’s a lot of rookies who are really shooting well from three so far this preseason.
Even Mudiay is shooting like 37%, pretty impressive.
Mudiay is 6-16, I believe.
Rozier is 6-8.

T RexOutside shooting is the most delicate and finicky skill in basketball.
I was pretty surprised the Steph Curry shot as well as he did in the playoffs. It’s just the skill that is most vulnerable to efficiency drops in high pressure, or unfamiliar circumstances like the playoffs. That’s what makes Curry the MVP. Even Larry Bird only shot like 32% from 3 in the playoffs in his career.
For a guard coming into the NBA like harris who can only really hang his hat on shooting, because of a lack of elite athleticism, they are prone to major loss of confidence that can quickly destroy their career.
It’s really important for rookies to have some other skill to fall back on, to give them a confidence boost, and to keep them on the court.
James Young is starting to finally make his 3 pointers in NBA action. Part of it is having the confidence that comes with having a year of experience, but I think part of it is also him knowing that he can contribute on defense now.
For guys who don’t have any other skill to feel good about, everything, including their NBA career, can feel at stake with every single shot they put up. That’s not a great environment to build confidence in, and a great shooter can quickly start looking like garbage and be out of the league.
Also, sometimes brash swaggy personality is more important than pure shooting talent in fringe NBA prospects like in the second round.
Nobody looked at Marcus Smart or Terry Rozier as good outside shooters, but their brash confidence (and ability to impact games outside of shooting) helps them overachieve.
Very few shooting specialists seem to come out of the second round, but if the guy can also bring defense, or some other NBA level skill besides shooting, like Wes Matthews, those guys are more likely to maintain and build the confidence needed to make it in the NBA.
