just wanted to speak my mind about how bad i think dumars has been doing. I don’t like judging GM’s too much just on being a monday morning quarterback. If a team makes decisions that i think make sense at the time, and then they don’t work for whatever reason, i’ll tend to give them the benefit of the doubt. But when I see a gm make a move that makes no sense to me at the time, and then it doesn’t work, I lose a lot of respect for that gm. And when they do that over and over, well, I call them Isiah Thomas, lol.

I think dumars made some great moves at first and put together a veteran team that went to 6 straight conference finals. A lot of that had to do with the east as a whole being down those years, so that number is not quite as impressive as if it had been done in other years. He even escaped a lot of crap for the darko choice since they won the title that season.

but recently, dumars has been terrible:

He decides Flip was the reason for the team losing (he wasn’t) and fired him and replaced him with Michael Curry. Bad move.

Then he decided to trade the teams best player in billups in exchange for an expiring contract in iverson. He should have been able to get more for a proven winner and leader then just an expiring contract seeing as how the pistons had no real intentions of building around Iverson who is actually older then billups. Then just a month later, when he is supposedly looking to shed salary and build for the future, he gives hamilton a huge overpaid contract extension that will keep him in detroit for the next 3 years. This made zero sense. You get rid of your best player so you can clear space to give to a worser player who is just as old?

Then he let curry take all the blame for the immediate iverson/rip/stuckey fiasco. Don’t you think he would have made sure that either iverson or rip were gonna be fine with coming off the bench before you just traded your franchise player away for iverson? The media ripped on Michael Curry’s inexperience as coach during all this time while Dumars sat back let him take the blame and then fired his new coach.

So last summer he has more money then any other team to spend on free agency. He can go after a building piece or sit back and wait for the bigger summer of 2010. But no, he spent it on ben gordon and charlie v. Both guys play poor defense, are not very tough, and are inconsistent as heck. Add in that ben plays the same position as rip and surely there was a better plan of attack last sumer.

Now the team stinks, they have little money to work with, Kwame Brown, Chris WIlcox and Ben Wallace are the bigs, and rip and ben are combining to make about 22 million a year at the sg position. Oh yeah, and chuancy is a star on a title contender still, just on another team. Those millions and millions spent to build a 30 win team would make me mad as a piston fan. If you are gonna lose, at least save money and try and get tough young players to build around.

yeah, i mean the pistons could always get good draft picks and turn it around. You know, when i see any gm who makes moves that make me scratch my head and then they sure as heck don’t work out, that just irritates me. It’s like these guys make millions for doing a worse job then i could.

Isiah thomas was spending more money then any gm in the league to put together a 25 win team. I mean who else thought Steve Frnacis and his 20 million a year to come and join marbury and crawford and now you have a 50 million dollar backcourt that all are shoot first with little defense was a good idea? Some of these guys need to be called out more.

You are soooo right..Are we the only posters on this site rants about the poor job Dumars has done the past 2 years? Signing Gordon right after the Iverson, Hamilton & Stuckey fiasco didn’t make any sense to me either…But his bad decisions the past 2 years has put Detroit in the position to get Walls..Plus they have alot of talented players that they can package

I always defended Joe Dumars on this site, but the more I think about all of the excellent points you made about him, I have to wholeheartedly agree.

coudnt agree more with this post and statements…my question is this though…Is Rodney Stuckey really that good??? I seriously believe that Rodney Stuckey is not as tallented as Joe Dumars or anyone is making him out to be…I know its not Stuckeys fault but like the point u made..who is John Kuester?????? Ben Gordon is a good player…Kuester keeps him on the bench in the 4rth quarter when he is a proven closer, instead he goes with Stuckey who to me is a 6th man off someones bench, with no type of 3pt shooting in his game.

I agree with everything you said, except about Stuckey. He was averaging 20, 5 and 5 before he had some injuries. He’s a starting point guard in this league. You can doubt Dumars for moving Billups too soon just to start Stuckey, but Stuckey can play.

He is a good player, but his game is limited to drive and draw, with an inconsistant mid range jumper…he is 6’5 but i think sometimes he plays below the rim too much, thats why he is a very poor mans Dwayne Wade….Wade can play 10ft and higher all the time then give you an occational 3 ball.This is Detroit, we want greatness and especially at guard…look at our history…Isiah Thomas, Chauncey Billups, Joe Dumars, Vinnie Johnson..all of them could shoot..Stuckeys jumper needs to be more consistant first…then expand to the 3pt line.

Joe Dumars has done a horrible job post Big 5….He better get it together soon before they take our Pistons out of Detroit. already loss the Shock.

i like stuckey as well. I don’t believe i said anything bad about him. I think he is not a number 1 option, but he is having a career year and he is far from any problems in detroit.

I just want to add that i do not think dumars should be fired. GM’s take time to work things out, so i’m not calling for his head nor do i think he is the worst gm i have seen.

who cares that a player plays below the rim?..paul,nash,magic,youre boy oscar,rondo plsy below the rim. you gotta stop thinking that just because someone doesnt jump out of the gym or isnt a physical specimen, then they are lacking. youre right about the inconsitant midrange though. ive been off the dumars bandwagon since he picked the bum darko over melo.. i still recall jumping out of the chair when i saw that pick. forget the fact i was rooting for a fellow area guy and i could care less that they hand prince there already, you dont pass up a player who everyone knew was gonna be a baller over a guy who wasnt even a monster while playing overseas and so unknown. the title and eastern conference title games saved him. i do give him credit for putting that team together though
