BigChamp12ParticipantAccording to Adrian Woj’s twitter account, Jodie Meeks just agreed to a deal worth 19million over 3 years with the Pistons.
I think its a good move for the Pistons. They wanted a shooter and found one in Meeks. I wonder what this contract means for other 2 guards on the market.

CavFanPRParticipantFirst bad contract of this free agency frenzy, and it barely got started! I can imagine Meeks eyes when he signed that contract, how lucky.

TRC1991ParticipantDetroit living up to its well-deserved reputation as a team that greatly overpays players.
Meeks should have gotten $4m – $4.5m
$6.33m for him is a little ambitious…

Jester87ParticipantI am a bit torn here. Pretty much every analyst on twitter is shocked. It’s definitely a lot of money. On the other hand: 1) Meeks is 26 so he might still have some upside
2) Detroit desperately needs shooting at SG
3) Shooting is more and more valuable in the Nba nowadays
4) There are only 2 good shooters among FA SGs: Jodie Meeks and Anthony Morrow.I’m a bit biased here because I’ve always liked Meeks a lot, but those deals are not signed in a vacuum, they follow the basic laws of supply and demand. If a good is scarce and there’s a lot of demand, it’s going to be more expensive.
I still can’t make my mind up anyways, because even if I like the player and I can see some of the reasons why he got that much, it’s pretty obvious to me that it’s a big contract. Even if there wasn’t anything better available via free agency, they could’ve found at least a comparable player via trade. Also, it seems like the kind of short term move, they get a player to complete their starting lineup and to make their team better immediately, but I don’t think he’s a long term solution as a starter.

UnbiasedObserverParticipant6.3 mil per year for a 3 point shooter and a hustle guy. Don’t get me wrong you need a guy like that to help you win games and is very important to an offense but that is what we call overpaying. You have to really convince someone to play in Detroit and throw a little more money at em. But if any team in the NBA needed a shooter as bad other than Chicago? That’s Detroit.

doubledribblerParticipantI’m not sure Meeks could have signed that deal quick enough. Good for him, but I have the feeling they wouldn’t have had to offer him that much to get him, especially this early in free agency. I guess we will see how it turns out. He was obviously a priority for them and they need shooting badly.

r377ParticipantThis isn’t the sort of news i like to wake up and hear. There wouldn’t have been that much competition for his services, why did he have to over spend like that.
Is SVG trying to do what he did in Orlando – have one or two inside post players and surround them with 3 point shooters….

Sharp ShooterParticipantDid the pistons over pay jodie meeks? Yes. What people don’t understand is that it is hard to lure FA to detroit….Detroit is not like LA, NY or MIAMI.where there are many attractions..Nowadays, alot of players are not intrigued with Michigan regardless of the team..Not only Detroit but other cities as well. If you noticed, today players are always attracted to BIG NAME CITIES, CHI, NY, MIAMI, etc. Unless Detroit has won a championship (back in 05′) Detroit will continue to overpay these players like Gordon, Villi, Smith, Meeks. The best way to go about building the team is to go primarily through the draft. Having Drummond and Smith (Monroe?) on your team isn’t enough to lure FA. Even when adressing their main off season priority (Shooting) Meeks and Morrow are your only best options. So the question is now, is who do you want to overpay and who has more upside?

King CaluchaParticipantStill trying to digest this. Overall I think it makes sense, since he’s not completely one-dimensional. He can play some D, handle the ball … and he’s only 26. He’s got a few good years ahead. Everyone will get overpaid this summer (well, maybe Mario Chalmers won’t, but you get my point).

r377ParticipantThe secret is to find players that have upside and you can get under market value – just like shares and property.
Back when they signed Ben Gordon and Charlie V, I would of personally signed Big Baby Davis and Marcin Gortat who were free agents at the time. Gortat was a backup in Orlando but you could see the potential. Same with Big Baby, he was not starting.
Ben Gordon just came off a huge Celtics v Bulls playoff series so his stock was high. Charlie V was still developing, i dont’ really know why he played so poorly in Detroit.
Both Davis and Gortat were about $6-7mill per year. Ben Gordon was signed for $10-11 and Charlie V about 7-8 mill.
I REALLY REALLY hope they go after Jordan Hamilton. We need a SF. He shot 37% and 39% from 3 in college and about 37% in the pros. Roll the dice on Jordan Hamilton. Xavier Henry can also shoot the 3 ball and could still develop.
Meeks may develop into a starter and a decent player, he just could of been had for less money. Over $6 mill is crazy. They could of got both Hamilton and Henry for that money…..

ChoppyParticipantIf he puts up similar numbers next year (15pts, 2rebs), is he worth 6mil? I think for that sort of production 6 mil is ok. Just not sure if his production will translate to a team with more options than the lakers. I don’t know how the deal is structured, but in 3 years with rises in the salary cap, 6 mil will seem a lot more palatable. And he will still only be 29.
