Robb_CParticipantI dont think Jerry West gets enough credit for what has happened with the Golden State Warriors, Obviously Bob Myers should get a lot of credit due to him managing the operation.. But its incredible to me that any team that Jerry West touches end up seeing ridiculous success.. West truly has to be considered the brightest executive the NBA has ever seen..

Hoop til the death of meParticipantI’ve actually heard some reports give credit to Jerry West. He does deserve it. He basically layed out the blueprint while Bob Myers executed it to perfection.
Jerry West is really one of the greatest basketball minds ever and has one of, if not the best eye for talent.

NBAjunkie81ParticipantHe was known as "Mr. Clutch" & he was a great player….. From a small town in West Virginia…..
West struggled w/ life long depression due to physical abuse suffered as a child at the hands of his own father…. HBO’s Real Sports did a piece on him a few years ago…..
& after seeing it, it’s impossible not to admire West for his integrity & the quiet suffering he has endured his whole life….

dcaseParticipantIf you want a more in depth look at his upbringing and entire life for that matter I would definitely recommend his book "West by West; My Charmed, Tormented Life." It is an excellent read.

Memphis MadnessParticipantSupposedly, back when Jerry West was at Memphis, our owner kept badgering West about him not signing anyone during free agency, so Jerry picked up the phone, made a call and signed Brian Cardinal to a $40 million dollar contract (or whatever it was).
That showed Heisley (our owner at the time).
Probably true. If so, Jerry West burned Heisley on that one.
Gift wrapping Pau Gasol to West’s old team I thought was kinda sketchy but that turned out to be a good trade for us since we ended up with Marc Gasol. You know, the Marc Gasol who was fat before he was skinny before he got fat again. Basically, the Human Before and After and Before Poster.
Rudeboy was correct to bring up the Hubie Brown signing. I think that saved the team. We were in really, really big trouble. That helped right the ship, and gave us our first real taste of winning. If we hadn’t have had Jerry West or Hubie and that initial run, I think the Grizzlies would still be flailing around.
… I wonder how Jerry West would compare this current Warriors team to the ’72 Lakers team he helped lead to 69 wins (including 33 straight) and an NBA title. Obviously, that team had Wilt Chamberlain, and Ezeli/Bogut can’t compete on a talent standpoint, but they specialize in rebounding, defense, and passing — like Wilt did in ’72. The killer was the West-Goodrich combo at guard who could really light it up, shoot from distance, and do other things too… Then they had some good role players at the forward spots. They weren’t even that big but they really meshed well.

HitsterParticipantJerry was an all time great player and helped build several successful teams as a GM. We don’t know exactly how hands on he has been at GSW but I’d guess he has had a quiet hand in some of the key Front Office decisions and has been there to offer words of advice to players when required.
Jerry West was a superstar as a player but always conducted his back office duties quietly and got the job done a sign a a great executive. Rather like the Spurs, there was never hype or speculation about the moves he might make, he just went out and made the effective moves.
For younger fans, it is worth considering how great a player Jerry was, only 5 players have a higher regular season PPG average than him and only 2 have a higher play off PPG average than him.
