The Celtics needed a center since KP is going to be out and Rasheed may or may not come back from retirement. Boston needed him, why all the hate on Jermaine O’Neal?

it’s not hate on jermaine o neal its just a fact. bruh stunk it up in the playoffs like wizkid said. the celtics play their best ball in the playoffs. they need an asset in the playoffs not a liability. they should’ve went after shaq or haywood. this now leaves shaq going to atl or dallas more believable. my dark horse for shaq is the heat

He stunk up the playoffs because he was playing against the best defensive team the playoffs. KG, Perk, Sheed.

He also adds another dimension to their team, he’s another big bodied defensive presence who can hit the mid-range J.

Good move. It adds depth at the center spot with Rasheed retiring and there really are not many decent big men available. I can’t stand Jermaine. He hasn’t been anything since Reggie retired, but he’s big and he has some skill. Most of the big guys we describe as being 6 fouls or good at setting picks.

All the signings other than Paul Pierce center around the expiration of KGs contract (two years). Until this contract is off the books the celtics cant really sign any young free agents. Ray Allen was given a two year deal as was Jermaine O’Neal. All these contracts come off the books at the same time. But better yet, they can be used as trade chips. We all know the worth of expiring deals in trades.

The celtics have extended their championship run two extra years by these signings becaue the KG contract puts you in that state of limbo otherwise (where you are an 8-10 seed in the east) without JO or now Ray Allen. This past year we saw how heady these veterans were. As a celtics fan, I couldnt believe how they “flipped the switch” come playoffs to smash orlando and CLE and to take the defending champs to 7 games. That was very impressive as we know. Pending injuries this type of run could happen next year (or two years given this window). The arguement can be made that KG is another year removed for knee surgery so his health will improve. If JO, KG or ray gets hurt in year two you can easily blow it up by trading their expiring deals for young talent to rebuild around. Basically you can go either way pending the health of the team.

My point is getting younger isnt an option with KGs contract. Right now you go for it and hope for a run like last year with one extra game. Despite physical limitations (of being old) experience was worth its weight in gold, as demonstrated this year.

So how do you extend this window? You sign your guys because you can go over the cap and you bring in a player who can play right now with your MLE. Young cant get younger because you cant sign anyone outside last years team because you dont have the cap room. Using your MLE on a younger player who isnt as ready to contribute now would be counterintuitive.

That is what they did with JO. He is gonna be a 5th option and just has to defend. He will be splitting time the second half of the season with Perk and in year two will be a back up. Remember that is what he is a back up 7 footer whose price tag is the MLE and can defend the other teams center (in addition this is natural position he isnt some undersized 4). JO isnt a great player by any standards but he is a back up 7′ for the MLE, there arent many out there. Compare him to this population and the current free agent market (you cant do much better).

Additionlly the celtics didnt have to give up their draft pick bradley so in two years at age 21 he should be ready to start (when the big 3 retires). Also this is why they draft Luke in the second round this year. He is ready to play now, much like big baby was a couple years back.

I think the celtics are making the right moves, the question of will the new “big 3” completely squash this if it happens.

So basically Celtics just get lucky to be able to unload Sheed’s contract (through retirement) and now they want to get another Sheed-like contract in JO?

I actually think Sheed is better than JO. He can play D and shoot 3s (that’s pretty all is left on Sheed) while JO can do ???.

It’s just a 2 years deal, not going to hurt. The Celtics is full of old folks anyway, trying to fight for their last chance to get another championship.
