OhCanada-ParticipantIve mentioned before I love the job Kidd does as a coach even back in the Brooklyn Nets days. He is a smart tactical coach tjat gets the most of his guys and is lroven to have success developing young players. Although having watched his teams in a ton of playoff games Ive noticed his major flaw and where his teams usually go wrong.
He is very spontaneous and makes decisions on a whim. For no reason at all per say he will switch things up and go with say Hawes instead of Monroe (just as an example) just to throw the other team a curveball. If his plan stops working he is quick to turn to his plan B instead of playing things out. In game 5 he has completely stopped blitzing the ball handlers with doubles because Norman Powell has been starting and knocking down open threes. Although this has allowed Toronto to be more comfortable they have had alot less pressure and u forced errors being allowed to find thier rythm offensively and Milwaukee has seemed to have lost thier edge and they are getting less fastbreak oppurtunities. Why go away from the blitz? I would just play through it and wait for Toronto to go into a shooting slump.
They also have gone away from using Middleton as the primary ballhandler along with Antetekoumpo of course. They seem to be running the offense through Dellevadova, Brogdon and Monroe more now. Well see how it goes for them but as a Raptors fan Im loving the pace of this game.

BiggysmallsParticipantI won’t pretend to know a whole lot about how Kidd coaches now. But it always blew my mind how stupid he handled coaching the Nets in the playoffs.
For the first 42 minutes, the team would move the ball beautifully and the result would be steady open shots and good offense.
Then in the final 5 or 6 minutes its like the team would stop running offense and go into straight isolation over and over. It never made sense to me at all and after doing it for as long as they did, the only explanation I could come up with was that Kidd wanted it that way.
I think OHCanada nailed it when it comes to developing players though because he’s done a great job adjusting his style to fit the guys he’s got. Think he will be an excellent coach for a long time – or he’s at least got the basketball mind to be one.

OhCanada-ParticipantYah I remember that good point he would always go iso late in the 4th. To be fair he was using Paul Pierce and ‘Iso Joe’ Johnson in those situations. Kidd also came up in an iso heavy era although was the furthest thing from as iso player in his time. He does some weird things.
In the 2nd half they started blitzing of all people Demar Derozan with the double and a bit with Lowry but only in the corners which is useless. If anything they should blitz Powell and Lowry on every pick and roll, play Derozan single coverage while packing the paint and force Toronti to hit open jumpers and contested twos. But even now at this point its too late because Torontos shooters found rythm. Caeey has outcoached Kidd badly in this series. Powell has been the x-factor and Kidd seems to be scrambling for ideas.

BasterdInABasketParticipantBiggest flaw is letting Mirza suit up. Second biggest flaw is actually giving the dude any minutes.
All kidding aside Mirza is horrendous. If your gonna give those minutes to anyone give them to Hawes. They also are getting NOTHING from the center position game 5 and it was one of the few times I wanted to see Henson in there.
Hopefully Kidd is a master motivator between now and Thursday cause they’ve played like they clinched the series after that game 3 wipeout. Time to preach defense and ball security, couple of things Kidd was pretty good at back in the day.

esperanzafleet69ParticipantIn his defense, mirza puts up similar numbers per minute to ryan anderson, and jason kidd still playes him sparingly. mirza is a good bench pf to spread the floor. He usually makes more of an impact in his role in fewer minutes than most other bench players.

Russell0WestbrookParticipantKidd is doing a great job in this series considering her has a young team and he doesn’t have many scoring options at his disposal. The fact that he’s willing to try different players and styles shows how good of a coach he is actually. That’s what makes Pop great and that’s why Fizdale has the grizzlies tied in that series is making adjustments and having counter moves to the adjustments. I would like to see Thon get about 30 mins per game because he brings so much energy and he will be a big time player for them in tears to come. Even if they somehow win this series they will be out in 5 games next round so Kidd can use this to build the future with these young bucks

BasterdInABasketParticipantI know this is unrelated to this thread but Was just looking at Jason Kidds stats and obviously he as never known as a shooter and that wasn’t his game but he shot below 40% fg for his career. Efficient distributor and playmaker but can’t believe how a low pct shooter was year after year.

OhCanada-ParticipantWas never the greatest scorer but he always stepped into his shots with confidence and put up open looks to keep the defence offence. Kind of like Rubio in those regards.Thats something Ive always wanted guys like Rondo and Derozan to do more consistently.

esperanzafleet69ParticipantJason kidd was the one player who would come close to averaging a triple double in the 90’s nba.. when a team would have probably 15-20 fewer possesions per game…

Dazzling Dunks and Basketball BloopersParticipantTo be fair, Toronto is the better and more experienced team and they should be winning this series. It’s not like I would say Kidd is just getting outcoached by Casey.
I think Kidd came into this series with a very good game plan. It worked great for the first few games but Toronto has adjusted and is just playing a lot better now. Milwaukee really needs to force a lot turnovers and turn it into and up and down transition game to have any chance. They just don’t have enough firepower to score in the half court consistently.

cohenbc1ParticipantAgreed … by giving Toronto all they can handle so far, Kidd & the Bucks have shown they are way ahead of schedule. There’s nothing to complain about if you’re a Bucks fan.

mgreener_34ParticipantKidd imo is one of the most under rated coaches in the NBA right now. He’s not afraid to switch it up like the OP mentioned, and because of that his team has success when they really shouldn’t. What other playoff team starts two rookies? His move of Giannis to main ball handler was critisized by a lot of people, but it’s worked and Giannis looks like he’ll be ready to take the tourch from LeBron in a couple of yearrs.
I also think it’s imperrative to mention that all of his teams have been absolutely stricken with injuries. Parker, Middleton, and Giannis in two years, have still never played a single game together…that’s unbelievable to me (im not 100% on that fact though just heard it last night during the game). BRK was a mess from the jump, and so far all his teams have over achieved imo.
I think moving Moose to the bench was a great idea, as I personally think the new 6th man in the NBA comes in the form of a big man (Favors, Moose, Val, ect. ect.).
Just give Kidd time. His system seems to work, his players love him, he’s good in game, and he developes young talent. Honestly, what more do you want from a coach? His best player is still in his early 20’s, and if Parker can ever remain healthy, the Bucks will be an absolute force in a few years

SubZeroParticipantWhatever flaws he may or may not have, the spilling his drink was the greatest coaching move of all time
