Obviously young wont be the number 1 pick next year, but John Callipari has said that he has 2 players in James Young and Julius Randle who have a chance to be the number 1 pick. Everyone knows y Randle has a shot at number 1 but James Young is pretty shocking. I always thought that young was underrated and I wasn’t sure why he didn’t show up on more mock drafts or y he was so low. Callipari also said that out of the 40 scouts that have been to practice, a handful of them have said that Young might be the best player in the country.

How good is James Young? Will he even start for Kentucky? Is he the best scorer in the country? What’s his potential and upside? A lot of scouts r saying that young has been the most impressive player on the Kentucky roster.

I think scouts are impressed by the maturity of Young’s game. IMO, out of all the prospects on UK, Young and Dakari have the least AAU type games. The rest of the guys have some bad habits that they have to break (like playing with the ball too much, not moving while off the ball, bad shot selection, resting on defense, etc).
Young already has a pro style. He’s smart, plays with little wasted movement, can play on or off the ball, can catch and shoot, can score at all 3 levels and he’s supposedly been more aggressive attacking off the bounce. Combine that with his prototype size and exceptional length and it’s easy to see why scouts like his game.

IDK if he’ll start, but I’d start him at the 3 ahead of Poythress

Siggy what do u think of Callipari saying that Young has a chance to be the number 1 pick? And some scouts saying that he’s not only the best player on kentuckys roster but he might be the best player in country? How high can young go?

I think Cal is blowing smoke as usual. Cal has his little motivational tactics and he might be using Young’s play as a model for the rest of his team. Basically it’s like saying “Scouts have been really impressed with how Young plays…play like him.”
I don’t think he has a realistic shot at going number 1. He’d have to overtake Randle on the team as far as being the dominant personality. I don’t see that happening. Top 5-6 maybe. There’s no guarantee that he even starts. I personally think that he’s a better player than Poythress and is better suited for playing the wing, but Cal still might choose seniority over skill at SF. Young could also maybe start at the 2, but Aaron Harrison is the better ball-handler b/t the 2 and he obviously has chemistry with his brother. Cal can go a number of directions with the starting lineup and how he hands out minutes. The wings could end up eating into each other’s PT and therefore each other’s stock.
He needs to improve his handle and he’s just a good, not great athlete, although I have read that his athleticism has responded well to weight training.

I’m one of the biggest UK homers but I wouldn’t draft him #1. I would go as high as #4 with Wiggins, Randle, and Parker a head of him, possibly Smart as well.

Im an huge UK fan and I believe James Young is in fact one of the ost underated prospects in this draft. He has the size, length, and skill to be an top 10 pick add in the fact that he is in fact one of the youngest if not the youngest player in the draft he has all the tools need to be a big time player down the road. I also believe that once he adds to mucle to his frame watch out. Another note is there is no way Andrew Harrison does not go top 10 as well.

I was thinking the same thing as Siggy – Cal wants to motivate his other players to pick it up a notch. I definitely believe that Young has Top 10 potential, but not #1 pick potential. I think there’s a chance UK could have 4 players drafted in the top 10 (Young, Randle, Andrew Harrison, WCS), and up to 7 in the first round (Aaron Harrison, Dakari, Poythress).
