natevalParticipantIs James Young a bust? Young was drafted by the Celtics 17th in 2014, he still is only 20 years old. He’s had some really great games in the D League but has done nothing yet in the NBA to show he belongs.
What does his future hold with the Celtics? Does Young have any trade value?

providencefriars1ParticipantNot a bust yet due to his age. He will probably be thrown into a trade in the near future because the Celtics have so many picks and he is very down on the depth chart. He has value as a part of a trade, but the Celtics wont get anything if they trade him by himself

gabriel_akvaParticipantSome players need some time to adapt his game to the NBA. Look at CJ McCollum, for example…

BleedGreen808ParticipantVery disappointed in his lack of development in his two years in the NBA. He played well in the D-League as a rookie but it seems like his play regressed this year when in Maine. He shot the 3 ball well in the D-League but it never seemed to transfer to NBA gsmes.
I expect him to be included in a trade this offseason as providencefriars1 said. He’s still so young and has a good frame for an NBA wing so I can see teams being interested in taking a look at him with his cheap contract. With Boston he’s buried on the bench but maybe he’ll do better on a team where he can get playing time.

UncledrewParticipantJames young is classic case and by product of the Calipari one and done system however he wasn’t ready to be a productive nba player. Kentucky puts so much pressure with the shiny new incoming number 1 class every year that it pushes guys like James Young, Archie Goodwin, Harrison twins to name a few to the NBA before there ready to be there. In James’s case he came off a great tournament run that year and sported ideal SG size at 6’6 but his deficiencies have caught up to him against nba level players. His left hand dominance has lessened to a degree but is still there, his ball handling is limited, he’s more lengthy then fast or athletic, and his shooting inconsistency especially as a supposed knock down shooter is alarming. Albeit he is still 20 years old and developing, with marginal improvement over his first 2 years of his rookie deal he must resemble some sort of break out year next year to earn a rewarding 2nd contract. With the cap increase teams will be more generous in 2nd deal negotiations especially for a young developing player but the "potential" and promising "prospect" labels hold less and less value with each passing year that’s why kids should stay in school. It’s understandable that you want to cash out on being a instant millionaire can’t knock anyone for that, but if your not going to stick in the league then your chances of staying a millionaire are just as likely as getting drafted, very slim.

Bankroll PJParticipantJames Young’s case is the exact same case as Devin Booker’s. Both Young and Booker came out after one year while many people believed the weren’t ready to be impact players in the NBA. The difference is that Booker is just a much better player and mature person. James Young and Archie Goodwin both made the right decisions to go the NBA, because they both had a shot at the 1st round. If they haven’t improved much as full-time basketball players, who’s to say that they would’ve improved if they went back to college while pretending to be students first and athletes second? Guys like Wayne Selden and the Harrison twins sure didn’t improve much and their stocks plummeted. These kids have no interest in going to Kentucky to prep for a possible life outside of basketball. Maybe that’s the problem, but they’re going to Kentucky because they want to be professional basketball players. Many players never seen a role in the NBA, but whether they’re in the D league or overseas, at least they have a profession. Leaving early is the greatest way to maximize on their money and begin their professional career.
Also, I think Cal made it clear that he’s not trying to push these kids out the program by the way he treated the Harrison twins. It was evident that Booker and Ulis were better than the Harrison twin about midway through the season. Cal stuck with the Harrison twins to fault that probably costed him a national championship, because he said "they earned the right to be out there." Almost everyone in the next recruiting class (Briscoe, Murray, Humphries, Wynyard, Matthews) signed late, because Cal gave everyone the oppurtunity to make their choice on whether to come back or not. No one has been pushed out of this program. The expectation is that if you’re coming to Kentucky, it’s because you want to be a professional basketball player. A guy like Marcus Lee has stuck around for 3 years and been given many oppurtunities to play and increase his stock, the problem is that he’s just not that talented. Now we can argue that Cal doesn’t actually develop his players, but lets not say he pushes them out.
P.S. spot on analysis of James Young as a player

ExumInfernoParticipantA player can’t be a bust when picked at 17, in a draft when two players picked before him haven’t played a game and when he is on a playoff team with no minutes at his position.
To be a bust, he sits on the bench plays in more D-League games next season and after that never gets on another NBA roster.
That could happen.
The Celtics probably should pick between him and RJ Hunter, so Young could be a minor piece of a draft night trade.

omphalosParticipantI think hurting his shoulder after he was drafted really set him back, he missed training camp his rookie year and really atruggled to establish himself as a result.
This year he had RJ Hunter as a similar player competing for minutes and more established rotations with the vets.
I really liked Young as a prospect, but I’ve come to accept that he’s not going to be a long-term starter for the Celtics down the road.

Heavily slept on, he will find way in and stay in the league.

fredrock34ParticipantHe is still very young and the celtics have put too much time into his development. there are way too many tools there to give up on him so young. I think once his shot starts falling in the league he will be a very valuable player on any team his in. I would at least wait too see how much he improves this offseason

Dazzling Dunks and Basketball BloopersParticipantSometimes, for whatever reasons, these guys just don’t progress as quickly as you would hope. Young happened to be drafted to a team that was already deep on the wing and has dealt with some injury concerns which have no doubt stunted his development. However, it’s way too early to label him a bust. There have been examples of hall of fame caliber players (steve nash, chauncey billups, etc.) who didnt even become full-time rotation players until about their fourth or fifth nba seasons. Young still has the physical tools and ability to be a very good NBA player. He definitely needs to continue to develop his ball-handling and passing skills though, and show more consistent effort on the defensive end.

natevalParticipantYoung is still only 20 so the upside is there but who can afford to keep them on their roster? Young hasn’t proved anything in the NBA, with all the picks the Celtics have how can they justify a roster spot for him? It’s easy to say yes it too early but when push comes to shove do you save a roster spot for Young? I think Young’s time in Boston may be coming to an end

CU.LIONSParticipantJames Young may still end up a good NBA player one day, but sadly it won’t be with Boston. With 8 draft picks/Free agents coming (or some combination) and James can’t even get playing time now, I doubt he will ever see any with Boston. Sad but true.
