The Rockets and Harden have agreed to a 4-year renegotiation/extension of his deal. (similar to what Denver did with Gallo & Chandler last summer) They used remaining cap space to give him a raise on his next 2 guaranteed years, then added on another 2 years. The deal runs through 2020 with the last year being a player option. In essence they ripped up his current deal and gave him a new 4yr/$118 mil contract.

His new salary #’s will be

16-17: $26.5 mil

17-18: $28.3 mil

18-19: $30.4 mil

19-20: $32.7 mil (Player Option)

I love the move for Houston. Get an extra guaranteed year out of him and delay his free agency. Give yourself 2.5 more years to build a product around him and find that secondary star piece that meshes well.

Either way I’m happy for him. He is honestly the most hated on athlete for no reason. It used to be funny to make fun of Hardens D but now it’s just annoying.

 This is just my opinion, but that kid of money for a player like James Harden is asinine.  If you look at that Rockets team last year, it was a flat out disaster and that is being nice.  Is there anybody on this planet that would say, "Man, I really want to play with James Harden."  Of course not.  Harden puts up ridiculous numbers while simultaneously not caring about winning or playing any sort of defense, of course.  James Harden lacks any sort of leadership skills whatsoever and as long as he is with Houston, I believe they will be stuck in mediocrity.  I understand why Houston gave him that sort of money because he is a special offensive talent, but he is not a winner and Houston wil never attract any sort of top free agents while he is there.

Especially when his output very closely mirrored that of the previous year when he was right there in the argument for MVP. They got off to a poor start and it spiraled. You can’t solely blame that level of inconsistency on the one player who was consistent.

Is he the greatest leader? No. Is he sometimes a lazy defender? Yes. Is he a max player and generational player? ABSOLUTELY. There’s not a player in this league who isn’t flawed but the hate Harden gets for his is up there probably only behind LeBron.

People that may be viewed as a generational Talent in no particular order(while in their primes):

Lebron,K.D,Tim Duncan,Kobe,M.J,Shaq,Dwayne Wade,Karl towns(assuming he builds on last years effort as his stats rivialed an elite group in his rookie year in only 25-30 mins per game),Iverson(the original Westbrook),Reggie miller(the original Klay/Ray),David Robinson,Hakeem Olajuwon,Magic Johnson, Larry bird,Kawhi leonard(guy is a two way beast),Scottie Pippen,K.G..

Russell Westbrook could be in the discussion for this group by the end of next season to if he gets an MVP title as he has the follwing going on:Most tripple doubles since Magic,Tied with M.J for most Consectutive Tripple doubles in a calendar month,A scoring title,All Nba teams since 2011-2016(with the exception of 2014) finishing in the top 6 MVP voting in back to back seasons..,An olympic Gold medal,2010 world championships gold medal and if he gets a ring that would put the icing on the Cake..Oh + 2 x allstar weekend MVP(but I don’t know if I should even count that though lol)

It’s been in since the latest CBA. You can only renegotiate up, not take less $. And it can only be for a player who is in the last or second to last year of an original 4+ year deal. The team has to have cap space to pay the new first year salary with the raise. The extension must bring the total remaining contract years to at least 3 and no more than 4.

With all the criteria only a few players//teams are eligible to make use of the rule. Denver did it last summer with Gallinari and Wilson Chandler. OKC offered it to Westbrook after KD decided to leave but he wasn’t interested.
