Just finished watching the Wichita State v. Utah game, which was a great game by the way, but I came away very impressed with 7-0 freshman center Jakob Poeltl for the Utes. His defense was very impressive by blocking a number of shots and altering a few shots on drives to the basket by Van Fleet. Came away with some big rebounds as well, with his biggest one coming in overtime in the offensive variety off a missed free throw by Utah with only a few seconds left. Offensively, I did not see too much in terms of post skills or a jump shot, but he caught passes close to the basket and showed a very soft touch around the rim. Not a good free throw shooter, buts has a nice stroke from the line. Looks pretty athletic/fluid running the floor as he was not trailing behind the other players as they went up and down the court. Going to be a force in the Pac-12 while he is there and looks like a 1st round pick when he declares. Check him out next time Utah is on TV.

that was a great game. Utah blew a 8 point lead with a minute to go by having 2 turnovers on imbounds passes under their own basket that led to shocker threes. Great back and forth contest. Vanfleet missed a huge ft in ot on the front end of a 1 and 1with under 10 second sremaining. Utah was  also playing without one of their better players in jordan loveridge who is supposed to miss about a month.

But i agree with you that Jacob Poeltl was the biggest different. He altered so many shots down low and went hard after rebounds using his size like we always want to see bigs do. He is a decent athlete too, and moves his feet real well. Only a freshman, he should be around college for another couple years and is a guy that could defvelop into a nba talent. He is 7 feet and 240 and is averagin 12 points on 74%fg shooting to go with 10 boards and 3 blocks. Utah’s defense and rebounding to go with solid gaurd play can make this team better then i expected. Their only loss was to san diego st in a close one and poeltl had 12 boards and 7 blocks in that one.

he’s long, active, smart, bouncy with good 2nd and 3rd jumps. has great hands and feet. strong roll potential. fundamentally sound with his boxes and screens. moves well laterally. changes ends well. very good touch around the rim. good defensive instincts. needs to get stronger up top, but most kids do. nice stroke aesthetically, but the ball comes out of his hands inconsistently.

there’s a lot to like with him. if he were to declare this yr, i’d have him in the lotto. i don’t know if he’s in a rush to declare though.

Watch the krap out for Utah!

They drain the 3 and pound the offensive glass. Lethal combo.

impressive kid..has very good defensive instincts and a great feel for the game for a youngster…

i had never heard of the guy until i saw chad ford’s twitter page and he was proclaiming poeltl as a top 10 pick by end of the season…. jeff goodman was also raving about him, called him his favorite player(but goodman has a favorite player every year).

and the draft site that should remain nameless has placed him 10th for 2016 draft ….
