Yesterday against Duke was the first time I got to see Poeltl play, and I was very impressed. He is now one of my 3 favorite prospects this year (not necessarily the best 3, just my favorites) because I’m a sucker for big men. That said, what are some differences between him and fellow former Utah big man, number 1 pick Andrew Bogut? I never really saw Bogut until his latter years in Milwaukee, but obviously he had enough potential at one point to go #1

 Bogut was a much better passer, better interior defender and probably a bit more agressive . Poeltl has a softer touch around the basket I believe he will be a better offensive player in the NBA than bogut is. I would say he is a little more mobile than Bogut also. I could see him being a Robin Lopez type player if he develops a mid range shot which I believe he has the natural talent to do so.

I agree that he was a better defender than Poeltl at a similar age but Poeltl is probably a better all round athlete than Bogut was at the same age,

Poeltl may not become a superstar but any team looking for a rock solid defence anchor could do a lot worse than take a good look at him.

Depends on who is picking.  I don’t see the Sixers taking him if they fall to 3 or 4.

If the Lakers end up at 3 I would bet that Poetl would be near the top of the list.  They would either go with a center or a small forward.  However, if they think they could sign Kevin Durant (or even Harrison Barnes), Poetl would be the best fit of any remaining guys in his tier.  

He could also be a good guy to put next to AD in New Orleans. Davis needs help inside.

Bogut was a better passer and had more advanced post moves. Before his arm injury Bogut hit exactly 1 3 in his career.  He was never gonna be a stretch 5. Hitting the rare jumper does not = stretch potential.

Not sure why Bogut is even brought up in a Poeltl thread since they’re nothing alike.  Bogut was stronger, bigger, longer and he was actually pretty skillful post player combining his strong fundamentals, ability to hook with either hand and his post passing ability.  Poeltl’s more of a PnR big and finisher.  He’s more agile, quicker, faster changing ends, has good hands, knows how to move without the ball and present a target. I don’t ever see him being a great post option outside of being a decent post hub as a passer and the occasional mismatch post. He’s light, struggles to hold his position and doesn’t have the biggest frame.  His length is not that good for a C, but luckily for him he has very good feet so I foresee him being able to defend in space and being able to check 4s, even the stretch variety.

I don’t see a star, nor do I see a post hub, but I do see high level role player potential because of his smarts, activity and good hands/feet for a big.  I do like him though and think he’s a better PF/C prospect than WCS was last year (mainly because he doesn’t have rocks for brains, has better touch and good hands), but I’d have him closer to 10 than 5.

Probably a better fit on the Pelicans, or the T Wolves as a guy to go with KAT inside.  Further down the lottery, the Celtics second pick could be really good for them.  If the Celtics wind up with Poetl and Buddy Hield then I think they finish top 3 in the draft (behind whoever takes Ben Simmons, and maybe the team who gets Imgram).

 I realize I am in the minority, but much like Alex Len as a top-five pick, I don’t envision stardom in the NBA for Poetl, against players with similar size and length. Again, like Len, my prediction can be filed under the category, "occasionally terrific, but usually just serviceable."

Yeah I’m not expecting stardom from him, but I can’t see him not producing and being a solid starter. My guess is he’ll be a slightly more offensive, slightly less defensive (while still being good on that end) Steven Adams, except without the edge of Adams

No team expects a 7ft C to be leading the fast break charge or hitting 3 pointers night after night but if they do what is expected of them and a bit more then their team mates really appreciate it. Things like when you grab a defensive rebound you look for the best pass option or if the ball comes to you on attack if you cannot get a good shot in, you look the move the ball on and your team mates can give you the ball with confidence as they know you are a competent ball handler.
