Iverson may retire because of playing time in Memphis and family issues that he is having personally. Good choice for Iverson or should Iverson accept that he isn’t getting a starting job in Memphis?

If he should retire then me, personally, and a lot of people would be very disappointed to have a great player like him retire and leave things the way they are right now… It’s sad to see a guy who was the 2001 MVP, multiple-time All-Star, 2-time All-Star MVP, the top 5 leading scorer in terms of average and a guy who is considered as one of the greatest to play the game leave on such an ugly note… It’s sad and disappointing… Michael Jordan and Hakeem Olajuwon, even Charles Barkley had a so-so last years but AI’s had been very very ugly…

Sacrifice… It’s the toughest thing to do but if someone wants a ring so bad, that’s what they gotta do… Look at Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Ray Allen, they all had sacrifices to do… They gave up shot attempts to accomodate wins… They gave up points and records just to win a ring and it paid dividends in 2008… AI is just too stubborn and it’s really sad to see him act the way he does right now… He’s no longer a 24 year old phenom but a 34 year old vet that can be relied to and he has never shown the interest in leading the young generations to what he has accomplished throughout his career…

i think his complaints are right he has played well off the bench but they are losing great players should never sacrifice for a losing team. nobody would ever tell kobe of jordan to come off the bench but iverson has to he is the 3rd best scorer by average in league history he should start over conley or mayo hes better than both of them and he wants to win. if they were winning games with him coming off the bench he would be fine but there not winning and he should have the chance to start like he said look at his resume. hes shooting great and passing well give him more mins they are losing they way things are

All these reasons are why I thought Memphis signing him was a terrible move. I don’t know if they mis-lead Iverson to begin with, but the Grizz are obviously a young team trying to let their talent develop, and I was baffled by the Iverson signing. Vets like him should either be coming off the bench for a contender or starting for a sub par one. Iverson has never been the type to sit back and take a mentor role in the past, so why would he willing to do so in Memphis? He complained and sat out the playoffs for Detroit last year. I give Memphis an F for that signing, all it has accomplished has been locker room/media drama and a waste of money for Memphis and both parties time.

beanz- I might agree with you about iverson having a legit gripe since the team is losing, but he started complaining after 1 game. They were 0-1 with Iverson off the bench and they didn’t even have time to incorporate him in the offense yet, and he started complaining. ONE game is not enough time to say he has reason to complain about coming off the bench. Plain and simple, he wants to go out either dropping 25 points or playing on a winner, and it became apparent very quick he would do neither in Memphis.

also melo had his best overall year with iverson had a career high in assists, rebounds, and shooting %, and still averaged 25 a game so he can make players good around him and win games but he couldnt beat the lakers in the playoffs thats not bad alot of player would have that problem ask garnett!

nobodywould have ever thought about iverson coming off the bench b4. he is a all-time great player and everybody knows this. may or conley will NEVER be close to what he is or was as a player so he shouldnt be behind either one of them averaging more points and shooting better than conley with 2 less assists in less mins coming off an injury and shooting better and giving more assists than mayo so whos better right now if they wanted to win they would give him starter mins. the guy averages 27 & 6 for his career even kobes numbers aint that good why is iverson being blackballed he is a hall of famer that b4 he came to detroit he averaged 26 & 7 so he hasnt fell of he just doesnt get the mins for some reason. people give the nuggets credit for getting out the 1st round with chauncey only reason iverson didnt is because they played the lakers if they met the lakers this year they would be gone in the 1st round. he hasnt fell off u guys know nba gms overthink things every year and listen to the media he would be cool playing with winners in whatever role but no hall of famer would take a backseat to nobody on this memphis team. whenever they get smart and play iverson more mins they will win games and maybe get out of the lottery which it doesnt seem thats what they want to do

beanz, I agree 100% with your new responses. Iverson should with out a doubt be starting over Conley. I don’t understand why the whole minutes thing wasn’t discussed prior to Iverson signing. He should have known he would be coming off the bench from the get go if that was what memphis wanted. I think he should be starting. I just disagree with him using the “team isn’t winning with me off the bench argument” because it had only been one game.

I trained a guy who bartended at this cajun joint here in Houston and he told me Iverson came in [this was early 2000’s]. He asked if Iverson would sign the ball he kept in his car and Iverson obliged. I assumed that meant he was cool and the guy said “f$#k no. He’s the most arrogant person I’ve ever met in my life”.

Hearing stuff like that and reading what we’ve all read is a bummer. Iverson is one of the most influential athletes of all time, and he truely changed the game. His leaving has nothing to do with “personal matters”. The only thing this has to do with is his massive ego not being able to understand that he’s no longer “The Answer”, he’s just a has been who can contribute if he accepts his role. He’ll never accept his role, and I’d be willing to bet a huge chunk of money part of the reason is he doesn’t want his sh!tty stats to f@#k with his career numbers. The guy has proven himself over the years to think he’s above the game, and when reality hits he won’t accept it and blames everyone else. It’s really too bad, ’cause as great of a player he was he’s proving to be an even greater a$$hole.

I don’t need to make up stories to impress some randoms on an intenet board homey. I never met McGrady, I met Battier. I didn’t meet Iverson, a guy I trained did. I can’t tell you how many pros/ex-pros I’ve met or played ball with. I used to work out with Anthony Goldwire dude. It’s not that big a deal to meet these guys. They bleed red just like you and I. Kinda funny that you’re so star struck.

Throw Mayo at the point and have Iverson at the 2 guard…Mayo wants to run point right? Iverson knows how to pass even though he shoots more but hey it would be better than startin Conley Iverson with at least 33 minutes a game will be very effective and a win…and besides only reason Denver was even that good last year was because they upgraded outside of Chauncy with Dhantay Jones and Nene comin back then they had Birdman off the bench.
