Yes people, its thats time of year. Time to get lost in the draft hoopla. I wanrted to write about this after the lottery, but I decied to wait until after the combine when the measurements come in. Anyways,.I got a couple of questions to ask and if they’ve been asked before, I didn’t see them, so in my opinion, they weren’t asked.

First, in past drafts, some 2nd round guy is bound to jump up into the 1st round, or a late 1st rounder end up in the teens either because of workouts/measurements or because of comparisons to someone who has achieved some level of success in the pros. In a draft like this, where there is a lot of uncertainty amongst professional sports writers and general managers alike, there may be several guys who do so. Which 2nd round/late 1st rounder can go higher than expected and make their teams gm look like a genius for doing so?

Second, there is always a debate in drafting for need or talent. The Portland Trailblazers drafted for need in 1984 and skipped out on arguably the best player to ever pick up a basketball, but when David Kahn tried to draft the best talent in 2009, people saw him as a bad gm. Because this is a "weak" draft, drafting for need may not be as big a gamble as if it were done in a stronger draft. However, I know a lot of guys would blame the gm for doing so if the guy doesn’t fill the need well enough, especially if there are guys picked after who end up with better careers. Having said that, would it be better to draft a guy who can fill a void or pick the BPA?

It depends on the team’s situation, but generally you go for the BPA. If you’ve got nobody and need talent anywhere, then you take the best available. If you’re a few pieces away from being good, and drafting in the middle picks, then you go with something that fills a need. If you’re very good, and just need depth, you have the luxury of picking best available. But like you said, with the Wolves, it can backfire if you do that. Generally though, picking BPA ends up working the best, since you can trade what you already have if you find something better.
