I think this kid is one of the most intriguing prospects of the upcoming HS class with his size and developed skill  set for a big, which makes him pretty much bound for the NBA. I therefore would like to create a discussion on this kid with some questions:

Who do you think his game can be compared to (pick an NBA pro) as of right now?

I think his game looks like Channing Frye’s (with lest post skills) as of right now, which is a big with a very good jumpshot (for a big) but an evident lack of strength/post skills.

-How many years do you think he’ll stay at Baylor?

My guess would be 3 years. To me, Austin is not a one-and-done player simply because he is far from being physically ready for the NBA. When you look at the last five drafts, most of the Frosh bigs were physically ready. Names that come to my mind are Cousins, Kanter or Oden. Given that he’ll take time to bulk up (do you see him redshirt his freshman and/or  soph. seasons to do so?) and that there aren’t that much players that declare as sophomores unless they had a breakout season, I don’t see Austin going to the NBA before his third season. Unless he isn’t physically ready by his junior season, I don’t see Austin heading into his Senior season at Baylor. In fact, Seniors tend to be under-estimated compared to Juniors, so my guess is he’ll leave as a Junior.

-What main weakness do you think he’ll develop in college/before he’ll come to the NBA?

Well, to me that’s a no-brainer. He’ll develop one of the only things his game lacks, which is his post skills. To do so, he’ll obviously need to become stronger physically.

-Who do you think his game will be compared to once he’ll enter the NBA?

Assuming he’ll become stronger, I see him play a bit like LaMarcus Aldridge, maybe with a little less post skills.

-At which position do you think he’ll end up being drafted?

It all depends on his college career, but given the talent and size he has, I don’t see him fallinng out of the top-20 whenever he declares, and he’ll likely end up in the lotto.

-What will be his position in the NBA?

His primary position is and well remain PF given his skill set and range. I doubt he’ll ever be strong enough  to play C consistently in the league (imagine him again D12 lol). I think he might even play some SF at some times in a team playing big ball.

    What do you guys think?

Oh I’m so proud that LeroyJenkins has replied to my thread! But, why do you think he’s a bust? Is it because you think he’ll never overcome his strength issues?

I think he can be a solid NBA center if he learns not to play like hes a guard and really bulks up. not a great center, but a borderline starter/backup. 7 footers that can shoot are hard to find.

-Who do you think his game can be compared to (pick an NBA pro) as of right now?

His game resembles Charlie Villanueva, but you have to remember that Austin is still 17 years old and is already 7’0. So he is far from being a finish product and could turn out to be a different player once he’s fully develop. But as of right now, he looks alot like Charlie Villanueva.

-How many years do you think he’ll stay at Baylor?

I think he will stay 2 years. His potential alone will force him to leave early once he hears whispers of him possibly being a lottery pick.

-What main weakness do you think he’ll develop in college/before he’ll come to the NBA?

Using his height down low is his weakness, as well as physical strength.

-Who do you think his game will be compared to once he’ll enter the NBA?

I’ll stick with my comparison Charlie Villanueva.

-At which position do you think he’ll end up being drafted?

He will be a top 15 pick just based on potential. And if he shows development during his tenure at Baylor, he will work his way into top 10.

-What will be his position in the NBA?

He’s better suited at PF, but he could possibly play C for some systems.

I’d always thought of him as mainly a C who would need to bulk up but if people are talking about him playing as a PF or even some SF then would the need to bulk up be so great especially if he was alongside a more physically stronger player. I wonder if his ideal front court partner would be a slightly undersized banger like say Dejaun Blair who could provide the bulk and the presence whilst Austin provides the height.

I was interested to see that he wasn’t on this site’s 2013 mock draft so Aran obviously sees him staying more than a year at Baylor. I’d agree that at least two years in college would be ideal for him.

Wait, if he can develop even better ball handling skills, than, maybe he could be a legit three(Small Foward)? That would be crazy, although he may not have the foot speed to keep up with threes.
