Dazzling Dunks and Basketball BloopersParticipantI know this might sound crazy. He is still having a phenomenal season and is capable of making shots no other human being on the planet can make. However, there is a certain bounce in his step that he had last season that is missing this year. He is having a slightly harder time getting the separation necessary to get his shots off and it’s hurting his overall percentages.
What curry did last year was otherworldly and it would be unreasonable to expect him to replicate that on a yearly basis. He was clearly the best player in the league during the regular season and I still maintain that golden state would have probably cruised to the title had he not been injured in the playoffs. He has had his moments this season, but overall just hasn’t really been able to recreate that magic. I know that most will chalk it up to adjusting to playing with Durant, but I think it could be more than that. With Durant out for the foreseeable future, the warriors will need curry to be curry more than ever down the stretch. He just hasn’t really looked like that tplayer this season.
Curry is almost 30 with a history of ankle problems. It’s not unreasonable to think that his best basketball might be behind him. He might still be an all-nba type player for several more seasons, but I’m not sure we’ll ever see the curry of last season (the human video game that warped entire defenses) again. I write this knowing full well I could be dead wrong and look incredibly foolish a month from now.
So what does everyone think? Is curry just going through a cold spell or is this the beginning of his decline?

IndianaBasketballParticipantNo way he’s past his prime. He’s still in his prime. I do feel like ever since that knee injury last season, he’s had a slightly harder time creating space. I can’t say he’s on the decline though… I think it’s more of a shooting slump.
Expecting him to duplicate last season is prob an unrealistic expectation because that was one of the best seasons in NBA history.

SeattleSuperChronicsParticipantPast his prime I’m a sense that he has probably had his best season already but I don’t think he is in a decline. I expect 3-4 more great years. I’m excited to see him a veteran type player when he is past his prim honestly. When Steph is 35 he will still be stroking at one of the highest levels.
Man you got lebron getting older and Steph almost thirty. Got teams in a nuclear arms race against time.

r377ParticipantI think he is still good, numbers a down a bit with Durant there.
I do understand your point.
If you look at chris paul and deron Williams they were in the same draft class. Years ago there was a debate who was the best pg in the league with them two being 1a and 1b.
Look deron Williams now with his ankles. He has been really average the last 4 years of so, where as cp3 is still considered a top 10 player in the league

thetrademachineryParticipantderon williams went to turkey in a lockout season. He probably played and practiced in not so good courts which i believe hampered his health. Also he may have got some bad points for work ethic there.

HitsterParticipantSteph had an amazing year last season when he rewrote the record books in 3 point shooting. This year his numbers were always going to fall back a bit with KD on the team but he is still having his 2nd best season statistically and is ahead of where he was when he won his first MVP.
Steph turns 21 soon and has a bit of wear and tear on him but apart from 2011-12 he has always played at least 74 games in all his completed seasons to date so has good durability IMO.
Also he was 21 when he was drafted so has less miles on his body than someone drafted as a teenager. With his shooting game, I could still see him being an elite player well into his early even mid 30’s.
If you say last season was his peak then he may never reach that level again but I can see him continuing at his current level for a fair few more years to come.

MelParticipantthat’s like if the 2017 warriors win 66 instead of 73 and you ask if they’re worse..
technically yes, but it was just a silly, astronomical, season for him and that team..
but they are still great.
when you add arguably the greatest scorer of the last 15 years to your squad everything is going to change.
Steph has had to change the way he plays and take less shots and have the ball a lot less.
For the brand of Steph Curry it was probably worse to add KD but if they win three titles then it was all worth it

properbreaksParticipantI really get your point and I agree. It really doesn’t have anything to do with playing with Durant and his stats suffering or whether or not they win 1, 2 or 3 more championships… It’s all about is Curry capable of doing everything that he was able to do last year in the regular season before the injury and is he as good as he was last year. And the answer is no.
He’s slower….. It’s harder for him to shake people to get into his jump shot on the perimeter and it’s more difficult for him to get all the way to the rim and finish. We saw it in the playoffs and we really saw it in game 7. He got his shot pinned against the glass on a drive to the hoop and he threw up an air ball 3 with the defense on him.
It’s been a complete year and he hasn’t gained his speed back and I assume never will if it’s been a year. He’s still good, he’s still really, really, good. Just not as good as he was last year in the regular season when he was going insane which was the best that he’s ever been.
