The8thDeadlySinParticipantIdk what the Celtics are planning on doing with Rondo but i cant see him being okay with a long rebuild, like the one ahead for Boston. So my question is:
Is Rondo, and 1 other player, enough to get a second lottery pick in this draft?
Meaning, could the Celtics tank enough to get a top 5 pick (Not Wiggins, Parker, or Embiid) and swing a trade like Rondo and Green, for another top 8 pick?
If so, they could walk away from the draft with pieces like Smart/GR3, Randel/LaVine, or Exum/Grant.

drk3351ParticipantI mean Rondo is a stud so yeah I’d say, not top 5 pick but maybe top 12.

Tongue-Out-Like-23ParticipantI second this.
As good as Rondo is, there are some issues that arise when it comes to his coachability as well as his coming back from a long injury.
Talent-wise, that question will be answered this season as we see how well he plays without the Big3, with new teammates, and in a new system.
Now, trade-wise, who would want to trade a top-5 pick for him? Not because he’s a bad player, but there is a surplus of talent at the PG spot. The Jazz, Kings, Cavs, Nuggets, 76ers, Hawks, Grizzlies, and Suns all seem to have a long-term PG already, so I’m sure they’d rather use the draft pick.
The Lakers are trying to save money but I could see them pulling the trigger on a trade for Rondo if the player they’re targetting isn’t available anymore.
That leaves Orlando.
The only teams that don’t have a long-term PG in the lottery are the Orlando Magic and Los Angeles Lakers. The Lakers in the second half of the lottery while the Magic will seemingly get a top-5 pick. I don’t think the Magic would like to take Rondo when they already have a young core, they are better off just waiting for their core to develop and draft Marcus Smart or a swingman.
That leaves the Lakers as a possible suitor.

Mad MaxParticipantWhat about Denver? Assuming the Knick’s pick they own is a top-10 pick Lawson is a good PG, but Rondo would be an upgrade and a proven winner and a better playmaker .
Rondo, Green, and possibly ATL’s pick
for
Lawson, Chandler, NYK’s pick
A rotation of Rondo/Green/Gallo/Farried/McGee/Foye/Hickson would be very good, and better than what Denver has at the moment.

Jayhawks2011ParticipantLets say the Kings finish with around the 8th-10th pick do you think mclemore and the pick for rondo would work. kings go all in with a core of Rondo-Gay-Cousins. Not great but interesting… The Celtics completely rebuild and could get one of the top 3 then a Gary Harris type guy to play the two or maybe T. Ennis.

Mad MaxParticipantI would say yes if I’m the Kings. Unless Rondo still has knee/health issues. Think about it, at 8-10 even in this years draft can you say for sure that is better than Rondo? Also, PG has been the King’s biggest need forever. Marcus Smart will be gone by then. Rondo is a proven winner and a great faciliatator who makes sures the scorers get their shots, while also not just giving into their wimb and passing the ball when they demand it. McLemore, while promising, isn’t talented enough you keep on when you get the chance at player of Rondo’s level.

Jester87ParticipantChad Ford wrote yesterday that Danny Ainge isn’t as high as anyone on this draft, so one lottery pick would be enough. Also, Ainge is smart, he knows you can’t make a team work with too many youngsters and they already have plenty of extra picks. I feel they’re not going to trade Rondo anymore now that they traded Crawford, unless someone propose them something they can’t really say no to. But I think they’re not selling him short

Jester87ParticipantI just noticed I messed up the first sentence in the last post, obviously I meant probably the Celtics wouldn’t be happy with a lottery pick for him. Also, the Pelicans last year gave away #6 pick (Noel) plus a future first rounder for Holiday and, as much as I like Jrue, he’s not as good as a healthy Rondo.

TyroberParticipantI was thinking the Celtics might do something the Sixers did and trade Rondo for a lottery pick this year and another future lottery pick. Or maybe a young talented prospect + lottery pick this year. I don’t think they would offer this but something like Kings pick this year + McLemore for Rondo. Just an example of maybe a young stud + a lottery pick this year for an allstar PG. You have to give up good players and assets to get better players.

machu46ParticipantFor what it’s worth, Chad Ford hinted yesterday that he thinks Ainge is trying to stockpile draft picks so that they can trade for a second star so that Boston doesn’t have to struggle for a few more years. So I wouldn’t be surprised if they keep Rondo and try to pair him with someone that could be available like a Kevin Love, Greg Monroe, DeMarcus Cousins, etc.

jjonzParticipantThen you trade for Rondo with the intentions of appeasing the Fan base and making the playoffs.

BothTeamsPlayedHardParticipantIf you are Boston, why on earth would you deal Rondo and Jeff Green (both 27 years old) for the right to add another pick that likely will not be as good as either of them? The odds are that neither Jerami Grant nor Glenn Robinson III are ever as good as Jeff Green. The odds are even worse that any of the guards in this draft reach the level Rajon Rondo was at prior to his injury. If we know that Rondo is back to his old form by the end of the year, I’d leap to get him if I do not have a no brainer franchise point guard. If I am Orlando, I would rather have Rajon Rondo and Jeff Green than say any pick from 4-7. The same for the Grizzlies (though the return of Marc Gasol could possibly get them out of lottery discussions) and Lakers.
Boston has been in the stockpiling picks and youth business before. It nearly ruined Ainge and Doc Rivers when they had actually hit on their picks (Rajon Rondo, Delonte West, Al Jefferson, Kendrick Perkins pre-offensive implosion, Tony Allen, Gerald Green, Ryan Gomes, Powe with relatively functioning knees and were still young and bad, and a 29-year old Paul Pierce) but still could not function as a team. Many of the teams in the lottery (Utah, New Orleans, Sacramento, Minnesota, Cleveland, Charlotte, Milwaukee, and Orlando) are loaded with former lottery picks, some of whom they liked so much that they have already given them second contracts. This year’s Lakers team has become a depository for second chance lottery picks, and that experiment, interestingly enough, is assuring them of a lottery pick of their own. To have a proven playoff performer, a player who showed he can be the engine of an elite contending team because of his excellence on both ends of the court, at the age of 27 and say “maybe we can get a lottery pick for him” is absurd.

AmiableBaller34ParticipantPeople are really selling Rondo short if they think he’s only worth a lottery pick. They guys has averaged over 11 assists per game the last three years, and is one of the best big-game performers in the league today. He’s one of the best defensive PG’s in the NBA, and has been to two finals. If he was turning 30, that would be something else, but he’s still in his prime years.
I think it’s obvious what the Celtics are doing. They aren’t "in it for the long haul" as so many people seem to think, and are doing exactly what a few of the above posters have said. They are aquiring assets, and trying to make winning trades. They already have their frontcourt of the future, and the most picks of any team in the next 5 years. Celtics will be fine, and you will see their name brought up in a lot of trade talks in the next few years.

JD’s_TimberpuppiesParticipantAs I said in a previous reply I like the direction of the Celtics and Rondo is still pretty young. They are best off keeping him. With some of the pieces they have now, a good coach and high draft pick in a deep draft the rebuild may not be as long as many think in a crappy conference.
