Is it even possible for Andrew Wiggins not to get picked #1? Obviously any name can be called first overall on draft night, but I’m not talking in literal terms here. I’m talking from the persepective of a GM and an owner.

If the draft were tonight, I would personally select Jabari Parker, who in his own right has been highly touted, but not as much as Wiggins. But let’s face it, I’m not a GM and the draft isn’t tonight. So let’s say that if Jabari Parker continues to outplay Andrew Wiggins at their current pace. Which GM picking #1 would have the guts not to take Wiggins? With their job on the line, and all the hype that has been surrounding Wiggins for years, would anyone really be willing to take a player over Wiggins, and then risk watching Wiggins turn into a Hall of Fame player for another team? That GM would get run out of town in a heartbeat, especially if the player they select #1 in place of Wiggins doesn’t pan out.

Remember all the hype surrounding Michael Beasley coming out of college?  During the season it seemed like Beasley was a lock to go #1, but Derrick Rose eventually went first overall, won the ROTY award, an MVP award, and is a three time all star. 

But this isn’t Michael Beasley we’re focusing on. This is about Andrew Wiggins, whose name already carries a stronger image than Beasley’s name (Beasley’s off court incidents don’t really help.)

If you were picking #1 and your job was on the line, would you be willing to skip on one of the most hyped collegiate players in recent memory and risk looking like a fool if the hype turns out to be true?

There are plenty of worthy names out there worthy of being drafted #1: Jabari Parker, Marcus Smart, Dante Exum, you name it.

Who gets #1 really depends on the needs of the team that gets the pick.

It’ll be interesting to see who gets the #1 pick. Usually the team with the #1 pick has a lot of needs, so they usually go BPA. Unless the Heat, Thunder, Knicks, or any other team with a top SF are picking #1 I would expect a team to go BPA, but crazier things have happened on draft night (i.e. Anthony Bennett coming out of nowhere and messing up everybody’s mock draft last year.)

that’s the scary thing we all know he isn’t the best in college right now but look at Barnes and Drummond. Highly touted players cannot be passed on for sure just because they don’t dominate right away. BUT to take him number one is going to be a hard thing not to do hes not having a horrible season just not living up to the OVER HYPE that was giving to a 18 year old freshmen.
I agree with Jabari as of now but in hindsight you don’t want Wiggins to be the next best thing and you passed on him what a nightmare for the next decade.

If you are a GM you take the guy who you believe is going to be the best player regardless of what anyone else thinks. If you are right, no one will care who you passed on and you will still have a job which is ultimately what matters. If you are wrong, well you deserved to be fired anyway.

I wouldn’t even say possible, I would say likely. I think more than a few gm’s would take Jabari #1. As much as people say he doesn’t have as high as a ceiling are crazy. This man can develop his body to a whole different level. The skills are there. The will is there.  Plays defense, rebounds. Instant offense. Team player. Winner. Imagine if somehow The Bulls could ship out Deng and Boozer and get into the lottery. Maybe a talk with David Stern and he can rig some lotto balls let The Kid stay home and Team back with Rose. Just dreaming. Excuse Me.

Wiggins has the potential to be really special. I don’t think he’s pure athleticism. I wouldn’t be surprised or angry if someone takes Jabari with the 1st pick, though.

 This draft is loaded so there are many different opinions on who could go #1 ….. if it was last years draft then maybe because there was no for sure #1 guy but this year many are in the running to be the first pick just depends on who GM’s think are the best fit for the franchise

 I think only Boston could really pull that off. And that’s for both Parker and Embiid if Embiid excels in offseason workouts. I think A-Wiggs is still and will be the number one.

Well at this point Wiggins is so marketable, that as a GM, I would pick him just because I know he’s going to sell tickets and merchandise. I also think it has to be said that as a GM I don’t care who’s better now, I have the first pick in the draft, so my team isn’t going to be competing out of the gate anyways.

I would look at every prospect and what they already have, and then determine what they need to do to develope into a great player. At the moment, I see Wiggins as a super athlete who plays great defense and within the team concept. If he becomes more assertive, works on his handles and shot a little more, then I don’t see why he couldn’t be a Luol Deng type player who puts up 20-5-5 with great defense and good percentages. That’s pretty good, and not taking into account how that player will develope their game on their own, or if they reach their full potential (Which for Wiggins, is a generational type of talent). I would have no problem taking that player #1 overall because I know no matter what they will help my team, and could potentially turn into a superstar.
