KingslayerParticipantThere are reports coming from Jordan Schultz of the Huffington Post that Phoenix is looking to deal away Markieff Morris, and is looking into acquiring Ryan Anderson from New Orleans. It makes sense that the team would look to move on from its remaining Morris twin, due to his legal troubles, the previous trade of his brother to the Pistons, and his reported rocky relationship with coach Jeff Hornacek. The Pelicans could look to move on from Anderson for the right trade, given that he will be an unrestricted free agent next offseason and will likely demand a contract worth well over 8 figures per season. The Pelicans have already invested significant money in their frontcourt this offseason (Davis, Asik & Ajinca – about $220 million total), and I doubt they would pay Anderson what he’ll want just to play backup PF. However, I don’t think the Pels’ would be very interested in taking on Morris’ contract to be a backup as well. A third team would likely be necessary to make this trade happen.
I usually hate trade ideas since they are mostly pure speculation and completely unrealistic, but there are rumors to support the Suns’ interest, and I think the following 3 team deal truly helps improve each team in the short term, long term, or both. Bear with me.
- Suns give up: Markieff Morris
- Suns receive: Ryan Anderson
- Pelicans give up: Ryan Anderson
- Pelicans receive: Terrence Ross, Luke Ridnour, draft pick(s)
- Raptors give up: Terrence Ross, Luke Ridnour, draft pick(s)
- Raptors receive: Markieff Morris
Why Phoenix would do this – See above for their reported interest. Anderson gives them a stretch 4 that they desire to replace Morris.
Why New Orleans would do this – See above for why they are unlikely to re-sign Anderson after this season. It would be nice for N.O. to get something for him that could help as they develop into a contender over the next few years. Ridnour’s salary is not guaranteed and the Pel’s would likely cut him to save money. This deal surely does not improve the team this coming season, but could help them in the future. They just locked up their frontcourt of the future, and there are 2 years remaining on the contracts of Holiday & Evans. They could use some assets for the future like Ross & picks. Ross has shown some promise in his brief career, but has been a bit of a disappointment overall. However he has the potential to develop into a solid "3 and D" wing player that is en vogue in the NBA (and a great fit with the Pels’ lack of outside shooting). I don’t know exactly how valuable a draft pick would be necessary to even out this trade for New Orleans – maybe a protected first round pick (or possbily a less valuable pick since Anderson is injury prone & his contract is expriring).
Why Toronto would do this – Toronto could absolutely use a starting caliber PF like Morris to round out their rotation. I think he’s slightly overrated and a bit soft compared to when he came in the league, but he is still a solid PF who would be a great fit for the Raps given his offensive versatility. He is also a young player with some room for development, and has a very affordable contract at $32 million over the next 4 seasons. The Raps could easily be willing to move on from Ross. He is a restricted free agent next year, and they have to worry about JV and Derozan’s contracts expiring as well. The Raps also have 2 future first rounders coming to them beyond just their own, due to some great trades by GM Masai Ujiri. Therefore, they could afford to part with a protected first rounder of their own.
The salaries match where necessary, and I think this could be one of those rare 3 team deals that benefits every team involved. Thoughts?

kerrstParticipantI think the trade benefits all teams involved (Raps need PF, Pels need a SF and Suns need to make changes) but Phoenix would definetly need a little more. Most likely the Rators 2016 pick (Raptors pick not the one they are receiving from eith knicks or nuggets) or draft pick from this year D.Wright would need to go to Phoenix.
I just posted a thread asking which PF would be the best fit for the Raptors to acquire and Markieff Morris makes alot of sense.

Tune SquadParticipantFrom the Raps perspective I wouldn’t want to give up on the possibility that T. Ross bounces back this year (he has scored 50 in a game before) for an absolutely mediocre PF in Morris, plus the fact that is has been said that Carrol will see some PF as well. Let alone why on earth would they give up any additional draft picks to attain Morris? No way!
Between Patterson and Carrol unless they are getting a top 10 PF I would rather wait on Ross and see if he regrouped this offseason or look for another trade. Morris is just not that attractive of an option, not anymore than seeing what Patterson does with more minutes (IMO).

sheltwon3ParticipantWhy Pelicans do this. They gave money to lesser players and they trade Anderson their best perimeter threat.

Tune SquadParticipantI would prefer Terrence Jones over Morris as well but I think it is unlikely that Houston would move him especially after missing out on Aldridge.
However if you think that the Raptors should give up Ross for a PF option, Kenneth Faried might be a more likely/ a nicer deal for Ross straight up and he is also someone Masai would be more familiar with.

terrancebowerParticipanti feel like then suns could get cut out of this deal. If I were the raptors I would rather have Anderson than Morris and it would be the same for the Pels either way. I like Jones the best and he’s the only realistic option because he’s still on his rookie deal right? The raps don’t have anyone with high enough salary to get Faried or anyone like that, plus Faried is overpaid anyways. I’d still do the trade in the original post but I’m just not super high on Morris as a long term option
