goneParticipantIn retrospect should the Magic have traded Webber for Penny? Could Shaq and C Webb have won the title? Best bigman tandem ever?

paradigmnParticipantbut….I actually always wondered this myself…..from the "ideal" standpoint of how to create a great basketball team….the common theory is a great point guard and great big man….I actually can’t disagree with this philosophy….but…that being said….SHAQ and C-WEB on the same team….in their prime….WOW…..I’ll go on record and say that would be a serious problem for any other FRONT COURT duo during that time period…and YES….possibly could have been one of the best bigman tandum ever.

KDThunder35ParticipantI thought about that the other day oddly enough. And I think they would have potential to be one of the best duo’s of bigmen in the league. They both were superior passers for their positions which I think would allow them to coexist and actually benefit each other. As nasty as Penny was in his prime, I would rather have had Webber and Shaq terrorizing opponents in the paint (especially when you are kicking it out from double teams to the likes of sharp shooter Dennis Scott & Nick Anderson was a pretty solid shooter).
Other great big men combos that would have rivaled them would have been Robinson & Duncan, Olajuwan & Sampson, McHale & Parish (those are just off the top of the head so I could be missing some good ones). After listing those, I feel Shaq & Webber would have dominated them. At the time they were in the league, Shaq was probably the best or 2nd best center in the league (Olajuwan), and Webber was at least a top 5 power forward in the game behind the likes of Duncan, Malone, and I can’t think of others but that’s why I’m almost positive he would be top 5.
Nice post, this is a really nice hypothetical situation.

Wavy BagelsParticipantAhhhh…what could have been. I think at the time though, the Magic were looking for a great presence in the perimeter while Shaq dominated in the post (Inside/Out, Vice versa). I’m not gonna say that they would have won the title in ’95, but that finals series vs. Houston would have at least went to 6 games instead of a sweep if Orlando would have kept C Webb.
*Pretentious Fact: Chris Webber produced "Blunt Ashes" by Nas off the "Hip Hop is Dead" album. Great song

RUDEBOY_ParticipantSurprisingly Shaq really wanted the team to draft Webber..And at the time the Magic needed a power forward..C Webb was the most hyped power forward to enter the nba since Karl Malone and adding him made the perfect fit..
But there were concerns about rather or not him and Shaq could play 2gether…But the Magic had a big problem..They had to reduce the payroll by a minimum of 4 million dollars to keep him….They thought about trading Dennis Scott for a draft pick and use his 2.5 million salary to pay Webb..Several Rumors have circulated in Orlando..
1 is that they couldnt figure out a way to keep C Webb..
2.They were concerned about his knees..
3.Penny, Blow them away in his 2nd workout and the team adding him to play with Shaq gave them visions of the 2nd coming of Magic and Kareem….
But Shaq and Penny made a very good tandem..They Shocked the Bulls in 1995…I think they could’ve challenge the Bulls in the late 90’s and won a ring,if Shaq had stayed there….

omphalosParticipantI think the problem would have been they’d both need their touches to develop into the players they would become. The twin-towers approach works if one is more developed than the other, or both are veterans, but drafting the two together would’ve caused problems in my opinion.
In a strictly basketball sense, they would have been an amazing combination, but I think if it could have stifled both of their progressions.

iguapops420ParticipantShaq was FAR too immature to actually let this work. Maybe a couple of years it would have been fine, but once Webber started getting a similar amount of touches and stats began to rival Shaq’s, that’s when problems would have arised. Think about it, he rarely was able to last with a perimeter guy getting as much glory. Imagine him having a guy playing downlow with him hogging glory. Ish would have hit the fan. As great as Webber was, Penny was the right choice. Shaq was always at his best when he had a guard creating for him.

Bmore_DCParticipantShaq and C-Webb…hmmm…now that is an interesting thought. everything happens for a reason tho and if Penny didnt suffer all those injuries the Magic would have gotten at least 1 ring…

aamir543ParticipantTyra Banks and Nicole Alexander on one team? That’s almost as bad as Kim Kardashian and LaLa having to share NY in a couple years.

llperezi think penny would have had the better career had he not gotten hurt. Fact is shaq had actually left town before injuries ruined penny’s career so thats kinda pointless anyways.
