T.J. Warren is averaging 11.3 points on 50 percent shooting in 21.8 minutes per game. In a modern NBA that prizes spacing and values players who stretch the floor with deep range balanced with penetration and shots at the rim, Warren has found success in the mid-range game.

Warren has a very instinctual knack for getting shots up when he’s balanced, under control, and at a good angle. He’s a really smart player with shot selection that is advanced for his age and experience. He won’t end up in highlight reels with flashy crossovers or windmill dunks, but he’s physical enough to absorb contact in traffic and has a smooth enough stroke to consistently make 15-footers off the catch.

On top of his skill in the mid-range game, he’s also super competitive and gets tenacious on up-for-grabs rebounds and loose balls. He doesn’t over-dribble. He isn’t averaging a ton of rebounds, but from the six or so games I’ve seen, he does box his guy out; he isn’t giving up offensive rebounds.

All things considered, he’s the kind of player who is going to carve out a pretty nice little career for himself.

I really love his game – he has such a diverse moveset when he’s operating in that midrange area, he can look like he is about to fall over and still get an on-balance shot up.

My concern is that while I love to watch him go to work, and he has been an effective player so far in the NBA, on a contending team is a skillset like his more negative than positive? Whilst he is a great operator from the midrange, a lay-up is always a more efficient shot, and everytime he takes a midrange two, a team like the Warriors or Spurs would have been whipping the ball around for a 3.

Again- I’m not saying he’s a bad player or a chucker or anything like that, I’m just wondering if in todays NBA if he gets relegated to good stats on bad teams due to his skillset not being ideal for the pace and space era we reside in

While this is the Pace and Space Era people like TJ who can get you buckets the way he does. Every spot on the court he has moves to score or get to the line. Not sure what will happen with the Suns, he should be the 6th man who get’s closer to 28 minutes per game if you ask me. Truly believe he is ready for the expanded role.

Once he develops a consistant 3 ball his value will sky rocket. It’s interesting how good of a scorer he is without being able to knock down the 3.
