mds0549ParticipantHe has always made too big of a deal about the All Star Game. Early in his career he made a big deal about not making it…didn’t seem to mind chucking up all those shots to get his points but always whined about the ASG like it was as important as a Championship. Now, he’s looking at playing in the ASG then getting shut down. I can’t tell where this guy’s priorities are and he should never be mentioned in the same breath as guys that have their eyes on the prize like Wade, Kobe, Lebron, KG and Duncan. He is a very good scorer but doesn’t bring anything else to the table and he knew that if he wanted to build a strong team around him then he should have gone with a more salary cap friendly contract.

John Henson’s MuppetsParticipantNever understood the hype surrounding this guy, great physical tools, but horrible teammate and mindset. Will never be a champion(without being surrounded by allstar team) in the league or elevate those around him.

John Henson’s MuppetsParticipantI honestly believe you could replace anyone of those guys with Melo in their team and that team would have not played anywhere near the level they achieved with the players in the initial post. Hence my statement of an allstar team, I believe it would take an unrealistic team for him to be able to obtain a championship.

thunderjerkParticipantI think his goal is just to be a good representative for free agents at the all-star game in Madison Square Garden.

JoeWolf1Wonder if he loves the game anymore, at least the grind of an NBA season. He’s very talented offensively, but he’s got 12 years under his belt, at times has let himself get overweight, hasn’t had a taste of even a conference finals to keep him motivated, and never has committed on the defensive end as much as he did during his first two or three seasons.
Melo has a venture capitalist firm, and from an outside standpoint seems to be someone with some business savvy. He could have his mind on the next step more than farting it out with a horrible Knicks season. If he can’t get aboard a good team quickly, he doesn’t strike me as the type of guy who plays until he’s 35+.
He seems to me like a guy who hit his stride after 3 or 4 years as a very good NBA player, but never took the next step to elite.

Sewok15ParticipantI agree with all of that except Melo not smelling the conference finals. Denver made it in 2009 and lost to the Lakers in 6 games. He started off strong in that series scoring 34 and 39 points but then finished out in typical fashion shooting 31% the final 4 games.

HitsterParticipantIt shows what a good coach George Karl was as he easily got the best out of Melo compared to the other coaches Melo has played under.
Melo has a nice long contract with the Knicks and as Joe Wolf said, I cannot see him really playing on beyond that but I think he sees that out.
Melo is an elite scorer but not as efficent as say a D-Wade who was drafted the same year as him and has a lower PPG return than Melo.
Melo statisistically is right up there with the very best over 20,000 career points already and 12th on the current NBA all time ppg leaders. He is only 0.17 ppg behind Kobe but overall we cannot put him anywhere near a Kobe as an overall player or making those big plays.

r377ParticipantIt is funny only a year or two back you would be negged if you spoke up against Melo as alot of kids on here thought he was a top 10 player in the league. Big difference between real life basketball and your Fantasy team. Scoring is just a % of the overal complete game of basketball.
Poor teammate, no defense, passing or leadership – all he cares about is making $$, attention seeking of a big city and scoring points – probably in that order…

tuck243ParticipantBefore Melo got to Denver they were one of the worst teams in the league. They were tied with Cleveland for the worst record and went 7 straight years losing. Once Melo got to town coming off a National Championship, he took that sorry team to the playoffs. In fact, up until last year he’s the ONLY member of that ’03 class to go to the playoffs every year of his career. It should’ve been Co-Rookies of the year with LeBron. Their stats were close and Melo went to the playoffs. (Keep in mind Jason Kidd and Grant Hill won Co-ROY and Grant’s stats were KILLING J. Kidd’s). To be honest, he had a right to gripe about not making those All-Star teams.
I’m not saying that Melo shouldn’t get a bulk of the blame as to why his teams don’t do well, but people tend to be too hard on him. Melo for the bigger stretch of his career didn’t play with a good PG. And when he did, they were one turnover away from getting to the Finals. They went 6 games (the next year) versus a very good Utah team where Nene and K-Mart got severely outplayed by Okur and Boozer (we’re not going to discuss how D-Williams destroyed Billups either). But Melo also had some tough games that series too, so I can’t put the blame on everyone else. Then the next year was Melo to the Knicks and murder she wrote.
They have yet to get a decent team around him and they’ve been plagued by Mike D’Antoni non-defensive system and injuries. Him deciding to come back to NYK was either: go to the Bulls and compete right away (still a risk because of the unkown status of D. Rose) or come back to the Knicks and rebuild once Amare’s and Andrea contracts are up… Also, that $129 Million contract helped too (Show me the money!!).
I just think he’s a prototypical – 2000 circa – AAU kid that was handed everything. If you didn’t stay on him he would do bone headed things. He didn’t take that next step with George Karl until George forced him to stop taking long jumpers. He increased his efficiency after that… Then that same year he punched the Knicks player in the face. Melo going to NYK was perfect for his career because the media will always hold him accountable. They just didn’t have the right team or system to surround him. One year he wouldn’t play defense and then the next year he would step up his overall play. I’ve seen Melo play some GREAT defense on LeBron and then the next game forget to rotate. Last year, him and Tyson were the only players on the Knicks that would rotate on defense and get their hands up. The front court was one of the best in the league defensively (I think #6), the issue was their backcourt which was ranked dead last.
Someone mentioned Kobe, but even he became James Harden defensively at times. Keep in mind I’m one of Kobe’s biggest fans. He didn’t rotate at ALL when Dwight Howard was there for a year and was often the main reason their defense collapsed.

B-ball fanParticipantTeams are getting more and more aggressive defending the rim and teams are getting better and better on offense. It is hard for iso-heavy players to be dominant scorers in the postseason. LeBron dominated in 2012 in the post, but his ability to pass the ball and get low position had a lot to do with that, plus he wasn’t totally reliant on half-court scoring.
Most of the NBA’s current elite teams are great at passing and spacing the floor. Golden State, Atlanta, Portland, Dallas and SA all are great passing teams that can space the floor. Houston has phenomenal floor spacing. Cleveland has had tons of shooting since the JR Smith trade. LeBron-era Miami had great success with spacing the floor and we saw how ball movement and player movement was so important to the Spurs.
Melo’s biggest weaknesses are passing and moving without the ball. He still could anchor a good team, like he did two seasons ago, but his style of play is not ideal for the modern NBA. Assisted buckets are better than unassisted buckets and Melo is just a little too reliant on the unassisted kind for a player who is not a great distributor. Melo’s shot creation doesn’t create enough looks for his teammates for him to take the next step.

ipowersParticipantNot quite sure what you don’t get. The All Star game is in New York and he wants to play for the fans of New York to give them something to cheer about despite this abysmal season they’re having. It’s not like they’re going anywhere and there is no need for him to push it if he’s not 100%. I could understand you not understanding him if he was going to play in the All Star game and shut it down while they’re in the hunt for a playoff spot, but they’re not. Some of you over think things. It’s not that complicated.

BiggysmallsParticipantHe wants to play for the dozens of fans in New York. What people don’t get is why he seems more dedicated to playing in a pick-up game than the regular season. That’s not a good look for someone who is supposed to be one of the faces in the league.
A bit contradictory for a guy to go recruit players and say "hey come play in New York with me" and then shut down the season after playing in a pick-up game.
I don’t know why anybody would want to go to New York to play with Melo unless the only thing they are interested in is making endorsement money. Melo is a turd and isn’t going to make players better and the Knicks haven’t been relevant.

ipowersParticipantWho does he seem to be more dedicated to play in a pickup game than the regular season ? He has attempted to play numerous times despite not being completely healthy for a while or have you been living under a rock ? He was just taken out of his last game against Miami and there was talk of him shutting it down earlier in the season and he was against it at the time. I swear when people have a problem with a certain person for whatever reason, they will see what they want to see, hear what they want to hear, remember what they want to remember and forget what they want to forget. Incredible about people and their biases.

HitsterParticipantAny decision to shut Melo down for the year would be made by Derek Fisher, Phil Jackson and the Knicks medical staff. The decision not to play him could be tactical, increases the chance to tank and thus get better lottery odds. It’s not Melo saying, we are out of contention, I’m going home until training camp. He’s one of the highest paid players in the league so his team are not going to let anyone let alone him dictate when he plays.
He can be "reluctant" to play and not push himself in workouts but that would be seen as a bad attitude. The medical staff access him, report to Fisher and Jackson who then act on their advice in view of Phil’s long term strategy.

BiggysmallsParticipantIf Melo has been hurting so bad, why didn’t he shut it down earlier? If he’s healthy enough to play in a pick-up game, why is he shutting it down for the rest of the year? Thats what rubs people the wrong way, and it darn well should because the guy is getting paid over 20 mil a year and prioritizes playing in a pick-up game over playing meaningful games.
People aren’t lining up to play with Carmelo Anthony. Players don’t seem to want to play with him all that much, and things like this are part of the reason why.
