OhCanada-ParticipantThe Cleveland Cavaliers are easily the worst team in Basketball right now, with the worst immediate roster and worst roster for the future. Although they can make changes and have a great oppurtunity to start building for the future now. The Cavs need to gut what lineup they do have and find teams who want the players they have. They need to find players with high talent and potential level whos value is currently low, whether they have not been performing well, or they have not gotten an oppurtunity to succeed.
The Cavs do have some pieces teams would be interested in such as Anderson Varejao, Mo Williams, JJ Hickson, Antwaan Jamison, Anthony Parker, Ramon Sessions and Booby Gibson, but they have to decide what theyre long term plan is and fast.
If I ran the Cleveland Cavaliers the first thing I would do is assess the long term value of each player on my team and see who could be traded. Step two would be to see what position the top players in each of the next two drafts and see what positions the potential 1st overall picks are, and what positions have the most depth, depending on depth and lack of depth in different positions I would consider trading cetain players on my team. Third I would create a list of available players in the trade market and upcoming free agency that have high potential, or could produce more if given the oppurtunity (the way Minnesota did with beasley and attempted with Webster and Milicic). Then I would pursuit those players.
STEP 1- Assess Talent
Aside from Varejao due to his injury and the fact that he is a capable Center I would be comfortable putting anyone on the trade block. Hickson has some upside although I would be able to trade him if the right oppurtunity presented itself. For now I would try to give big minutes to Ramon Sessions, Manny Harris, JJ Hickson, and Ryan Hollins and see what I get out of them. Jamison, Williams, Gibson, and Parker would go on the block immediatly.
STEP 2- Scout Future Selections
I doubt Cleveland will win 25 games this year or next year with the amount of talent on their Roster. They need to make a plan and get ready for who they maybe selecting. The next two years there is a good amount of depth in the SF and PF positions and a couple very good PG’s available. C’s and SG’s look very hard to come acrosse in these two drafts and therefore would become a priority to establish those positions on my team. With the 2012 draft looking to be year of the SF I would make a list of priority in the 2011 draft as (1) Sullinger, (2) Irving, (3) Williams. With all this talent at PF in the next two drafts I would make Hickson available. I would immediatly make Varejao a keeper at C and try to create a fast paced identity to make up for his lakc of size. I would also try to acquire a young talented SG.
STEP 3- Create A List Of Sought After Players (Trades and Upcoming Free Agency)
– OJ Mayo
If Mayo was traded to Cleveland he would have a great chance to harness his potential. He would become an instant volume scorer on a bad team similar to Eric Gordan, maybe not as much production. Also their is only Rivers and Beal that have the potential to be Top SG Prospects in the next two drafts, Rivers is better suited as a PG in my opinion and Beal will most likely stay more then one year so aqcuiring a SG for the future would be bright.-Anthony Randolph
Randolph is a high potential guy who could get alot of minutes on the Cleveland Cavaliers. Im not sure who his personality would co exist with Byron Scotts although it would definitely be worth a shot with the position Cleveland is in.-JR Smith
Why not take a shot on a guy like JR. He may have the worst attitude in the NBA, he may end up as the worst 1st option, but we are talking about the worst team in the NBA. The facts are he is a SG, he has been in Carmelo’s most of his career, and he is a 25 year old 7 year veteran in this league.–Marreese Speights
This guy has alot of offensive talent and I think he just needs a place where he fits in. Given the oppurtunity to succeed Speights could become a very useful player in this league. I would try to bring him in cheap and give him as many minutes as he can take before fouling out every game until the end of the year and see how he produces.-Corey Brewer
Brewer doesnt have much star value, although he can be a solid player in this league at the SG position. He does alot of things good and slowly improves many aspect of his game such as the 3 point range. He would be a perfect wing role player, and who knows if he harnesses his skills and becomes a great role player.Gerald Henderson, Hasheem Thabeet, Robin Lopez, Sam Young, Anthony Tolliver, and Jeff Teague would also be nice guys to target.
STEP 4- Attempt Trades
With my available assets, Jamison, Hickson and Williams I would try to get a couple of the coveted players on this list. Trading Williams and Jamison may prove to be a difficult task with their heavy contracts though Hickson with his small ontract long in length would not be as difficult. Trading Jamison and Williams would be extremely smart and should be done even if Cleveland gets meaningless players in return.Understand these are very opurtunistic trade thoughts, moving Jamison and Williams contracts would not be easy.
OJ Mayo has a great NBA talent level and deserves more shots and a better oppurtunity, or at least a starting role on a winning team. This trade would be greta for him to acheive his potential and his vale should be at an alltime low right now. Memphis gets a scoring PG, and experienced playoff performer in Moe Williams, along with a young PF who could replace Zach Randolph and allow them to resign Gasol. With the new CBA coming Memphis should be trying to save money.
http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=4f63dk7Phoenix maybe in play for Jamison if the feel like making a final push for the Playoffs. Cleveland should just stay away from the large contract of Josh Childress. Acquiring Lopez would be the ultimate goal, if they can pick up some role players with potential in the mean time, why not.
http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=4keqfh4I am not going to give a prediction of what I think this team should look like in 2012 or whatever. All Im saying is that if I was in charge i would try to have a core of Mayo and Sullinger going into free agency, then try desperatly to add a restricted free agent like Gasol, Stuckey, Brooks etc. to build a better future in Cleveland.

Tha_PrinceParticipantWell used holiday for you OhCanada haha good read.
This season is an obvious tanking though, I mean your giving big minutes to two D-Leaguer’s in Manny Harris and Eyenga.
I still wonder who Cleveland will take with the 1st pick though.

flyboyParticipantCleveland doesn’t really have great pieces. Parker and Sessions are their two good pieces. Williams has 2+ years left on his deal, has had injury issues, hasn’t had a great season, and realistically, he’s a lower tier starting PG. Jamison has an acceptable deal since there is only one year left, but he’s a difficult player to get a grasp on, since he’s a tweener, not great defensively, and doesn’t fit in all systems. Varejao is an albatross, Gibson is a player you can find for less money elsewhere. So, that is their biggest issue, they don’t have the talent currently to make moves to really improve their roster dramatically. Trading for draft picks and getting the #1 overall this season (hopefully for them) will be very beneficial for their future.

Lotto StudParticipantI like the idea of Mayo to Cleveland, but Memphis would not take Mo Williams because they locked Conley up as their PG of the future.

KayjayParticipantThis topic. You really did good honestly. I love it. Make another one, but fix the Kings or Minnesota. Only god knows whats wrong with those teams. Both have incredible talent, but I think other problems contribute to their lack of success. Again, good read.
