Ghost01Participant…With the Rondo trade talk.
This public perception that Rondo is some great player is unbelievably exaggerated.
The guy can’t shoot, hasn’t averaged 13 PPG, literally passes to pad his assist stats, has been criticized multiple times for not taking games/warmups seriously, and by all accounts seems to be an awful teammate.
There is no doubt, the Thunder would be better with a smarter, less shot happy Westbrook.
But don’t confuse that with an extremely limited PG who hasn’t played a meaningful game in over a year and looked pretty bad when he returned from injury this year. He’s also a few years older than Westbrook, and may have peaked when he was playing 3 future hall of famers and is nothing more than a solid player now.

For_Never_EverParticipantBecause he is one of the best passing pg’s in the leage he is padding his assist stats. He is also one the top rebounding and steals guards also. IMO, he is the best defensive PG in league. Not every player coming off a major injury can come back 100% right away.I might be mistaken, but wasn’t his injury more severe then Westbrook ?
At the tail end of the regurlar season his quickness and hops did finally come back to him. During the Playoffs against the Heats he at times was and looked like the best player on the court. It was the Big Four, not the Big Three.

For_Never_EverParticipantI haven’t heard of him not taking games/warmups seriously. So Rondo is a awfull teammate, why because he and Ray didn’t get along ? Other then Ray, the other guys loved Rondo. C’mon now Ray left the team to go play for the hated rivals. Westbrook got into a hissy fit with Thabo, and another time I wrote about it here.
That he and Kevin Durant got into it on the court because he wasn’t passing the ball. Kevin Durant was yelling at Westbrook saying effing pass me the ball. It also seems to me Harden and Green don’t show and have the kinda love for Westbrook that they show Kevin Durant. Both those guys have said great things about Kevin Durant, and I haven’t heard them say anything about Westbrook at all.

BobbyqrsParticipanthe is soooooo overrated its ridiculous. dude is probably the worst shooting pg whos a starter in the league. people keep talking about the fact that his jumper has improves but he still sucks at shooting. and it baffles my mind how he made so many defensive nba teams. he gives absolutely no effort on defense. it just shows that when it comes to defense, its more about reputation than anything

3 No Biases 3ParticipantAnd the underrating of Rondo continues…
I actually really like both players but to say Rondo is a limited player is absurd. He is regarded as having the highest IQ in the league, he’s without a doubt the best passer, he is probably the best big game performer at PG, and his competitiveness is through the roof. Not to mention he is very unselfish and will do anything it takes to win whether he needs to score 25 or only shoot twice and dish out 20 assists.
I actually think Westbrook and Durant make a good duo so I don’t want to break them up, but just stop with the Rondo isn’t a great player BS..

Scott42444ParticipantI think Rondo is a good player but I have NEVER seen someone say he has the highest basketball IQ in the NBA. That’s just absurd. Duncan, Tony Parker, Chris Paul, Dwyane Wade, and I don’t know…let’s say…Chauncey Billups. There are 5 guys off the top of my head that have higher basketball IQ’s than Rondo. Not saying he is a bad player and I am not saying he is basketball stupid by any means, I just think saying, "He is regarded as having the highest IQ in the league," is a ridiculous overstatement.

phila9012ParticipantWestbrook is an all around better player than rondo. Westbrook can shoot and score better than rondo, he can rebound better, he almost averaged 6 a game and he had had 3 knee surgeries in the past year. Rondo’s only edge is in his playmaking for teammates, which would be more of a debate if the the thunder had a better coach and the thunders offense had people to spread the floor, perk and Thabo aren’t ideal on offense if your only plays are westbrook and Durant isos and pnrs. Rondo would struggle in that offense. Westbrook is probably better at defense because rondo can’t stay in front of anyone. He gets steals but isn’t the best on ball defender if he isn’t stealing the ball. People get by westbrook because he gambles, people get by rondo because he can’t stay infront of them. So I would rather have rondo on defense. Rondo is still an all star, he is just not on westbrooks level as a player.

HaleParticipantDuring his 10+ assists streak a year or two ago even Bill Simmons was complaining that he was being "selfishly-unselfish" trying to keep it alive and was passing way too much trying to get assists.

Scott42444ParticipantI saw other people say that as well. He was basically making passes that would lead to assists versus passes that would lead to a "hockey assist", which wouldn’t add to his numbers, but would have been a better pass for the team to lead to an open look closer to the hoop. I don’t know if I agree with that but it wasn’t just Simmons that was calling him out on that.

B-ball fanParticipantObviously Rondo has his flaws. His effort during the regular season often is really bad. He is a selfish passer who hogs assists. He took a long time to become a passable shooter. He still is a bad 3-point shooter, although he is fantastic from mid-range.
But Rondo is a better PG at his best than Westbrook is. Rondo is extremely tough to keep out of the lane, is an elite passer, and is a good defender when dialed in who consistently posts insanely good defensive ratings (says more about the team than individual, but shouldn’t be discounted). He is a better defender than Westbrook and, when dialed in, is better on offense. There is a reason Rondo has been so extraordinary in the postseason throughout his career.
I don’t know if the Thunder would be better with Rondo at point. But if Rondo was playing at peak performance, they likely would be. Rondo could really help Ibaka and Durant and, unlike Westbrook, he actually is better at getting his teammates involved in the postseason than the regular season.
