Malik-UniversalParticipantokay, i play in an intermural basketball league at oakland university in michigan and NOT CALI!!! lol…
and my team is not very good, and im the number one option on offense, and my team is dependent on me for rebounds to… i actually like the challenges becuz for one its gnna make me a better player for sure, and two i feel like kobe 🙂 ahha
but my real questions is this
1.) does anyone have good advice on how to get rid of pre game nervousness… i ask this we get killed every game, and i worry that i will let my team down by playing bad like my last game
and 2.) for my team, im really the only guy who can keep up with the athletes we have to face (i mean we face some good ass players), and we dont score a whole lot either… so when i get the ball, i have a hard time whether to pass or whether to look to score…so when should i look to pass?? and when should i look to score??
and i appreciate the feedback
even if i dont get any 🙂

Tongue-Out-Like-23ParticipantPre game jitters will always be there. People that have been playing for years will always get them, people that have played for 1 year may not. It just depends on your personality.
The number one thing you have to do is not worry about negativity. As long as you go out there and play hard, you won’t let your team down. Win or lose. 30pts or 10pts. You went out there and played hard.
When it comes to assists and scoring. When I play a game that I’m obviously the 1st scoring option, I pass the ball around early in the possession, if nobody tries anything, I work my offense. If somebody is open or if I can make a play for someone else, I do. If I feel I have the hot hand, I get a couple of screens and if the picker isn’t open, I take the shot. Then again, I’m a pass first combo guard.
Plain and simple. Play your game and be confidence. No matter how bad you play, you have to realize that you have to keep composure and play hard. Your team looks up to you. Just play your game man.

RickyRubio9ParticipantI’m only 16 so I never really understood intermurals.
My friend always tells me when we go to University of Texas we’re going to play intermurals, lol.
I thought it was just a bunch of scrimmaging against random people?
It’s an actual league?0 - Posted on: Sun, 02/13/2011 - 12:32pm #489954

Stanford hoops1Had that problem in H.S and College. This is what i did
Come to the game about 30min earlier than usual and work up a good sweat from getting up alot of shots and chasing down you’re own rebounds.
As far as the team, set alot of picks to get you’re teammates open. Doing that will get them easier shots but also get you easier shots because most people really don’t know how to guard the pick and roll or pick and pop.
Tell you’re teammates to set alot of picks as well. Defenders do not like being picked and will eventually try to cheat and that’s when you fake a pick and roll or fake a pick and turn and seal ( if you don’t know what I’m talking about ill explain more)
Also pass the ball around alot, most defenders only play tough defense during he first 3 passes, after that they relax on defense

RickyRubio9ParticipantI love the fake pick and roll;
People always get annoyed and eventaully start sceraming out, "PICK LEFT" then I just drop back down low for an easy bucket if the pass is made. Sometimes my teammates are a bit ignorant when it comes to that though and miss it.0 - Posted on: Sun, 02/13/2011 - 12:57pm #489965

and no i dont care how many questions u ask lol
For oakland u, the only way you get into the league is if ur 18, and buy a recreation membership
idk how it is for other colleges tho
and standford hoops, i really appreciate ur comments, i mean the thing with my team is that we dont have a whole lot of chemistry unlike the teams we face, i set a lot of screens, but its always uselss after i set them
and i like ur advice

RICO 1981ParticipantI think that pre game jitters is just apart of the game, you should know they are coming and use it to pump you up. I’m sure you are not scared, just anxious to get started. your second question is harder because only you can pick and choose your spots to take over. I would try to get my team into it first and get mine within the flow of the game. but if you feel the game getting away from you than do what you have to do. good luck

Maysek22ParticipantYeah i played intramural in Uni as well, better ball than high school. Freshman year we had a bunch of unathletic slow guys too that couldnt keep up with the horses on other teams soo… we just turned every team we played against into jump shooters with a tight zone D hard rotations and challenges. most teams at that level wont have NBA calibre ball movement, so you can force a lot of 14-18 footers, which pros hit at 45-50% and the guys you’re playing will be more in the 30-40%, and force them into skip passes that are ripe for the picking. This’ll be a tall order, but if your team cares enough to try and run a kinda princeton offence with lots of screens and reverses, constant movement will make up for lack of athleticism…thats my 2 cents anyways for what its worth

mikeyvthedonParticipantIntramural Basketball: Basically, it translates to sporting competition within a given geographic area, meaning in the latin translation of intra muros or "within walls". What it boils down to is, when you go to college, you usually will have leagues for various sports. For basketball in particular, I know at my school, they had a number of leagues for skill level and such. They had Division 1, Division 2 and Division 3, which broke down to level of difficulty or competition, basically 3 was not as serious, 2 was a little more serious and 1 was super cereal. Their were also co-ed leagues, where you had to have a certain amount of females on the court at all time, so on and so forth. If you go to Texas, odds are, your intramurals will be obscenely huge.
My advice to you Universal, would be that everyone has pre-game jitters and I think Quincey was very right that by getting their early and building up a little sweat, they fade away some. You can kind of visualize and prepare for the game slightly, plus it gets you warmed up for running and shooting. Pre-game jitters will always be there and just remember, even if people claim otherwise or do not show it, they are probably just as nervous or anxious as you. Bill Russell used to throw up before every game he played. I am sure their are a lot of ways to deal with it, but I would just think that you know what you are doing and be confident in how you have prepared for the game.
It is very important to know the players you are playing with and see their positive abilities. That way, you know the best place on the court to get the ball to them and have an idea of what pass you might make that would be up to their level of comfortability. Sometimes people do not necessarily know how to use picks, some people may not know your intention is to set a pick to free them up, no good communication is usually a must. Also, let your team mates know where you would like the ball, and try to spread the court as much as possible. If a team plays zone defense against your team, definitely spread the floor and pass the ball around. In man, set a lot of picks and maybe work the post. Most of all, work hard regardless of the score and do not get to down on your team mates. Set a positive example and always play as if every possession matters, even if it is a blow out. Your team mates and the other team will both see the positive example you are setting.
Basically, it really depends as to where you are playing on the floor as to when to pass and shoot. But, I tend to think passing the ball often is usually the best thing to get people open and for your team to gain a rhythym. Overdribbling usually can take the wind out of your teams sails, it was something that killed me watching the Heat play yesterday. I mean, their are times when Isolation is the way to go, particularily in a close game or final drive, but playing as a team is usually what gets teams the lead or a rhythym. Also, if you tend to over dribble or take to many shots, your teammates will more than likely end up taking stupid shots as they more than likely will feel they may never get the chance again. Move around constantly if you can, and just be happy to know you gave it your all and that you played as hard as you could. If your teammates are clearly below your skill level, their is only so much you can do, so try to instill confidence rather than take it away. If your team does not take it seriously or does not listen to you, do not let it get to you and hopefully find some better guys to play with next year, you are still young. But, have fun, know that everytime you play you get better and feel proud that you are one of the better players on your team rather than feeling down due to your team getting beat. Their is only so much one person can do, and I am sure every team has their share of great players. The more you play, the better you get, so just keep playing and practice to make you the best player you can be. Hopefully, that will also inspire your team.
