TRC1991Participantcould you guys see atlanta sending josh smith to memphis for the #2 pick-then atlanta would draft a PG of the future (rubio) to replace the getting-old mike bibby
meanwhile look how dirty memphis lineup would be:
PG- conley
SG- mayo
SF- gay
PF- smith

j1232eParticipantyou cannot trade a player with a contract like this for a draft pick! You kids will never learn.

butidonthavemoneyMemphis has enough cap space to take Smith for only a draft pick.

birdman113the Grizzlies have the most cap room in the nba they could afford to keep Josh Smith.

maravich44ParticipantThey have cap space to keep him but would have to trade players with comparable salaries in order to aquire him. I think that’s the point ji23e was trying to make. That’s why a a high salaried veteran can not be traded straight up for draft pick.

jcjParticipantI think the requirement of trading comparable salaries only applies when you are over the cap. If both teams are over the cap, the salaries of the traded players have to match with 125% I think of each other, and have to match exactly for any teams over the hard cap or luxury threshold. A veteran for draft picks can happen provided that the entire salary of the veteran is within the cap (i.e. if the veteran’s salary is 11M and cap room is 11M or more, its ok, but if cap room is only 10M, then you need compensating salaries).

OldSkoolBasketballParticipantDuke sucks. Anyway Memphis did want Josh Smith last offseason. They signed up an offer sheet but Atlanta matched it.
