It’s June 23rd, you are Ernie Grunfield(GM of the Wizards) and Mitch Kupchak(GM of Lakers) calls you up and says “We will trade you Andrew Bynum and a two future 1st round picks for the 1st pick in this years draft(John Wall).”

Remember this is June 23rd so you haven’t traded for Kirk Hinrich yet so you can take on Bynum’s salary without giving up another player. What would your response be? You would atleast have to think about it, this is how the line-ups would look if you were to make that trade(assuming you don’t re-sign Josh Howard):

Bynum is a very good center when he is healthy that is the only problem that I would have with that trade if I was Grunfield if Bynum was 100% healthy and the Lakers said that he was I might pull the trigger that Wizards team would have a great young front-court for the future with McGee and Bynum. What would you guys do?

I would do it Bynum is a Top 5 Center when he is healthy, Wall hasn’t proven himself. He is not going to be anything special I am tired of all the hype about Wall. Wall is not going to win rookie of the year, Cousins or Griffin is going to win it. I don’t know what people see in Wall. You heard it here first. I know I am going to minused a whole lot, but I don’t care.

pretty simple, first off John Wall obviously better than Bynum, second 2 first round picks from the lakers guarantees picks between 25-30 in the first round, especially with Wall prob 30 in the first round. Bynum and 2 late first round picks for John Wall just isn’t even close to worth it.

You already have Andray Blatche who proved he can be a 21-8-3(assists) guy, a good passer down low and his very good dribbling ability along with good hands.

Then you still have JaVale McGee who is a shot blocking athlete. Can easily be better than Bynum in the coming years.

Bynum only looks good on offense because of Kobe, when Kobe leaves, we will all see what happens to Bynum, he won’t be that 24-10 guy he’s expected to be. JaVale McGee can easily be a 14-10-2 guy.

Bynum is injury prone and is owed 29mil over the next two years, and the year after that has a 16.4mil team option. So either overpay him for another year or let him potentially walk after two years. Wall would have the potential to be in Washington for at least 7 years.

I think you also underestimate the hype around getting the #1 pick. Washington has been terrible the last few years, but getting a prospect of Wall’s quality will spur curiosity among locals, put people in the seats and give some excitement to a franchise that has been a constant underachiever, as well as marred with scandal. They wouldn’t risk a franchise turnaround for someone like Bynum, who capability to be a huge disappointment.

Let’s not forget that Bynum, even when healthy, doesn’t even come to play every night. He is one of the biggest wastes of talent in the league.

Wes Unseld was a great player but one of the worst GMs in NBA history.

The only reason he kept his job over an extended period of time was his extremely close relationship with owner Abe Polin. He treated Unseld like a member of his family and could never pull the trigger on firing him for incompetence.

As a GM, you are given one Christmas present per life time. Kupchak had his already in the Gasol trade.

Key word. It is not worth the risk when you have someone of Wall’s ability to try and build around a center with a history of injury. As much as I love Greg Oden and think that Bynum is a very solid center when he is healthy, with their injury concerns, it would be crazy to take them. Not to mention, I do not know why people are so blown away by teams giving first round picks. I mean, I can understand if it was from like, say, Cleveland right now or from the Timberwolves, but getting two first rounders from the Lakers? You are not going to be picking sooner than 25-29. In other words, you would have to be incredibly lucky to find value. I had a guy telling me how great it was to get picks from Miami (granted that one of them was from the Jermaine O’Neal trade) in the Chris Bosh sign and trade, but we are going to get the 30th pick in the draft. As for me, I was an advocate for getting anything we could for Chris Bosh, albeit that was probably very difficult considering he more than likely refused to be traded anywhere in hopes he could make his own decision of where he wanted to go (because he might be as hated as LeBron if he was traded midway for even decent to likely below value only to leave. That would be a major slap in the face. But, LeBron would still be hated more.) So, no, trade makes little sense, hang up.
