sjobljaParticipantIf a team has a pick that they acquired in a trade….for example the Jazz pick coming up from Golden State which is protected 1-7. Let’s say the Jazz get the pick because it ends up at 8 and then win in the lottery (lets say it moves up to pick #3)….does it go back to Golden State because of the protection or do the Jazz keep it meaning that the potection only occurs before the lottery balls bounce. I would appreciate an answer from people that REALLY know the draft rules…..not just assumptions. Thanks.

kdtriv01ParticipantThe protected pick would go to Golden State. The way they work is, if it ends up 1-7 at anytime before the actual draft, the GSW would keep the pick. IF they do not get into the top 3 in the lottery, they will end up giving the pick to the Jazz.

uwon2ParticipantThe Jazz will keep the pick. NOTE: Draft order is not final until after the draft lottery.

benny15ParticipantGolden State gets to keep their pick if they enter the top 3 via lottery. scenario happened to Memphis for the 2003 draft. during the lotto, they were gunning for all or nothing since after several years of protection, they only had the top pick protected. since they just missed out by getting the second over-all pick, it went to detroit.
