Hector_Reyes_8Participant“Dude, if Roy and Oden weren’t injury-prone, the Blazers would be LOADED! Lillard, Roy, Batum, Aldridge, and Oden?! Man, injuries suck!”
OR
‘Dude, if the Blazers took Durant over Oden, they’d be Lillard, Wes, Durant, Aldridge, and RoLo! Can you imagine how many rings they would’ve gotten?!”
That, up there, is complete bull. For one thing, it’s all hindsight. Hindsight is one of the things that I believe separates a casual fan to a fan that knows their stuff.
Nobody at the time would have suspected that both Roy and Oden would suffer chronic knee ailments. Contrary to popular belief (at least what I’ve commonly heard) Oden DID NOT tear his ACL 3 times. I’ve seen/heard that be said multiple times, it drives me nuts. People think that any knee injury is either an ACL or MCL strain or tear, not knowing that there are other knee ligaments, like the UCL and PCL. A player who suffered such injuries would be Baron Davis, who completely tore his ACL, MCL, and patellar tendon in his right knee TWO YEARS AGO. Ligament tears are much more serious than broken bones.
Back to my little rant, hindsight is wrong. The above stands, but also, HOW WOULD THE BLAZERS HAVE KEPT THAT LINEUP? I’m capping the important stuff. After a couple years, the players the Blazers selected would’ve been free agents. Do you not think players like Roy, Oden, and Aldridge would command serious NBA attention? Not only during their restricted free agency, but their unrestricted free agency. They’d more-likely-than-not would want to see how much they could possibly get, and the Blazers would either trade them, have them walk, or go over the cap and pay large amounts of luxury tax, something made much more difficult under the new CBA.
“Batum was traded to the Blazers, and Wes was signed as a Free Agent.”
So? The Blazers would’ve needed to pay them, and a trio of Aldridge, Oden, and Roy would’ve been expensive, and few young players would leave money on the table to join another team where minutes may be slim. This is an anti “what if” rant. I hate “what ifs”. They’re all pipe dreams or fantasies that didn’t happen. I’ve talked about what ifs in the Trail Blazer organization, but this applies to all sports franchises. The Clips traded their pick to the Cavs for Mo Williams, that pick became the 1st overall, Kyrie Irving. The Nets traded their pick to the Blazers for Gerald Wallace, which became Lillard. What ifs can be applied to anything and everything, just think a bit before you utter those 2 words.
Thanks for hearing me out.

ProudGrandpaParticipant"Dude if Michael Jordan and Scottie pippen and bill wenningnton had found the fountain of youth and still were playing for the bulls at their peak skill level, the bulls would have Jordan, pippen, d-rose, Joachim Noah, Kirk Hinrich, and Bill F****** Wennington!!"

knicks4lyfe88ParticipantThey would of been in the play offs and possibly competing for championships. Not in a position to draft lillard

Hector_Reyes_8ParticipantA Roy, Aldridge, and Oden core wouldn’t have been able to obtain Lillard, Batum, or Mathews as they’d be on multi-year, multi-million dollar salaries.

treytalkssports.comParticipantThe Nets sent their draft pick to the Blazers for Gerald Wallace (a ploy to get Deron Williams to resign). That was the pick that became Lillard.
Now, would the Blazers have traded for Gerald Wallace if they had those guys? Who knows.

TheArtistPaysthePriceParticipantand was a injury risk to some degree just not to the degree that what happened.
Even though we know that about Roy and Oden who had numerous small injuries pre draft we seem to applaud Philly for drafting guys with serious knee injuries. In the case of Noel and Embiid, neither worked out for Philly pre-draft. They couldn’t have even done balance analysis to see if the problems were indicative of a larger issue. Nerlens for one has noted growth plate issues and a history of surgeries on the same leg. If Parker injured his leg again at Duke after missing time in high school then it would seem like the Bucks had it coming if they got Oden’d. We don’t look at Philly with the same disdain for some reason.

Scrooge McDuckParticipantHector , I have never heard anyone say the things you are claiming. The blazers are contending for a championship despite all they have been through speaks volumes.

Hector_Reyes_8ParticipantI don’t think the Blazers are contenders yet. Not enough defense on the team. If their shots aren’t falling, they get blown out.
Also, I spend time on BR, so there’s that.

tuck243ParticipantAt the time of KD and GO, GO was the better prospect… KD was too skinny and it was concerns that he wouldn’t be able to score like that in the league because he wasn’t strong at all… This also is when Dwight Howard was taking off, so people saw how important it was to have a dominant big man…
Also, outside of keeping players because of contract situations… Can we discuss who were the coaches then too? Nate (IMO) destroyed a couple of young players careers by not playing them through their mistakes… Also, "if" KD would’ve had a green light like he did in Seattle, would we see LA this good? Remember, it took LA a long time to develop into what he is now…
