MikezParticipantnobody panic but Anthony Bennett made 3 shots in a row.
He’s actually looking pretty decent, and it seems Earl Clark has been put on a list.

Chilbert arenasParticipantI don’t think there are too many people on this site that want to see him do poorly. I mean of course he shouldn’t have been the #1 pick but you can’t blame him for the Cavs being overly optimistic and once again reaching on a player. Hope this guy can get it together and maybe this can launch him into some kind of consistent production.

he_gets_bucketsParticipantI think we can actually blame the Cavs now, they reached 3 drafts in a row and been burnt 3 times.

DlesnieParticipantSince I assume in 2011 you’re talking about Tristan Thompson, he looked like a reach at the time but I think he turned out pretty well.

Jester87ParticipantAlso, none of the guys who were in conversation for the 1st pick is really shining. McLemore is putting up numbers only because he’s been given lot of space and the possibility to play over his mistakes, but he’s shooting pretty poorly (and shooting was his best attribute) and he’s totally lost on D. Len’s been just as bad as Bennett (he had an injury, but so did Bennett). We don’t know anything about Noel. Also their owner wants to win so he would’ve never allowed his GM to draft with the 1st pick a guy that could possibly skip the whole first season unless he was a real game changer (and I’m pretty sure Noel isn’t going to be such a player). Oladipo is the only one who’s doing well, but honestly he didn’t receive much consideration as a possible 1st pick by no one. The other rookies playing well, Burke, MCW and the greek freak were all out of the conversation.
I guess this team is such a mess that pretty much anyone would’ve struggled here.

Bmore_DCParticipantIts not like anybody else in this year’s draft is dominating (unless you wanna say MCW is)…I actually really like Bennetts upside if he works hard this offseason.
The Cavs recent draft history is another story…

ph90702This is why you don’t quit on somebody after half of a season.

Toronto16ParticipantNot to mention they have the worst coach in the league, and have been playing Bennett out of position the entire season.

TheArtistPaysthePriceParticipantAnd this is also why people with very low basketball IQ believe that he is going to be the worst number 1 pick ever. They are easy to spot because they will use statistics that say so but ignore the sample size issues that would make all finding irrelevant.
"There is no way that Brandon Bass (Haslem, Big Baby, etc.) will have a better NBA career than Anthony Bennett". AB already has more ability than journeyman of his ilk now and he has so much room to grow. I’m was never the biggest fan of the pick but it didn’t make much difference to me because the whole class was crap. At the mid point of the college season I thought it was Noel or bust but then his knee busted and apparently stayed busted.
Anthony Bennett is good at basketball. I know its hard for some people to understand because he sucks so much at basketball. He has the right attitude and genuinely seems like a good guy so eventually the talent will shine through. As a basketball fan and a big Cavs fan I have a love/hate relationship with Bennett but there is no doubt to me that he has more potential than Victor Oladipo, to me as far as ceiling is concerned.

TheArtistPaysthePriceParticipantMy choice for the number one pick at the time would have been in order: Oladipo, McLemore then Len or Bennett. All four of them suck as being NBA ready and none of them will spend 3 years in their careers as a top 8 player in their positions, IMO. I think only McLemore even has a shot at such a feat and its very distant.

You do realize that you’re saying a lot of people have very low basketball IQ’s because they’re making statements after such a small sample size, while at the same time using one good game from Bennett (arguably his only good game) as the basis for proving your correctness?

TheArtistPaysthePriceParticipantNo, I’m proving my point by simply saying you can’t use statistics as a measurement tool to predict future outcomes if you ignore basic statistical principles like sample size. The first 100 shots of his NBA career or first 150 minutes played, is a borderline idiotic reference point. That’s like benching a guy who is 0 for 3 in the first quarter for the rest of the game because he is trending towards having a 0 for 12 game.
The point is smart people should stop letting people who don’t truly understand or value statistical analysis use jargon they don’t understand.
The data, like his shooting percentage which is 27.9%, is data, that is undisputable. What is disputable is whether you can use those 122 shots to suggest that he will make only 280 out of his next 1000 shots. Only someone with the limited knowledge of how statistics are gathered and analysed would attempt to make that leap.
I am not saying he will be good because of one game, I am saying because I see a talent and skillset to go along with quality personality traits, I believe he will be a good player pretty soon. Remember how people raved about Bradley Beal’s mechanics but looked horrified at his shooting percentage. The same thing to a lesser degree will happen to Bennett eventually. He has great mechanics and can drive and finish with either hand. He even has right or left hand floaters. Eventually the he will put it together much like Beal did after Christmas last year, just on a smaller scale.
