Western Kentucky coach Rick Stansbury has landed Mitchell Robinson, the No. 15 player in the country in the Class of 2017.

“I can trust him,” Robinson told ESPN on Wednesday afternoon. “He was the first one who really recruited me.”

The 6-foot-11, 225-pound defensive-minded big man, who plays at Chalmette High in New Orleans, previously committed to Texas A&M, where Stansbury had recruited him as an assistant coach.

“I think I can help build Western Kentucky,” Robinson said. “It’s a chance for me to make an impact right away.”

Robinson decommitted from the Aggies shortly after Stansbury left to take the Hilltoppers job.

That’s cool. I hope he isn’t a one-n-done type guy who just wants to get to the NBA as quickly as possible.

I’d love to see Western Kentucky get a few other good players and have a cool multi-season run.

Not even sure why…I’m not a WKU fan or anything. But that’d be neat. I get tired of all the same top guys going to the same 4 or 5 schools.

That’s great. My parents both went to Western and I’ve always rooted for them when they play. And Rick Stansbury coached at MSU where I live, not a Bulldawg fan but got to meet him a few times and he’s a great guy

My high school team used to play the high school where Rick Stansbury coached (Meade County).  He had a baller named Jim Andy Hahn who got some D1 looks.  Stansbury was quite the outgoing character and much maligned by his opponents.

Neat fact, WKU is top 10 in the NCAA in win percentage in basketball.

Western Kentucky is one of the best non-P5 programs from a historical perspective.  They’ve been to twenty-three NCAA tournaments.
