I’d like to briefly discuss the Hawks draft and how I think they overthought their top pick. This is really my only complaint, as I think Huerter and Spellman were the right picks at 19 and 30.

I think passing on Doncic was a mistake. If he ends up a bust, you went with the safest option in the draft who has already proven his worth in the 2nd best league in the world. The kid is going to be good.

Selecting Trae Young was a head scratcher. He had an amazing start of the season, and then got bullied and really shut down towards the end. Not saying he won’t do well, but taking him at 5 was a reach. I know they see Steph Curry in him, but I am struggling to see it because of his lack of height and athleticism.

Everyone is so quick to say, "Dude you’re missing the point, we get an extra 1st round pick next year." That’s great and all, but Dallas is not looking like they’re going to be a terrible team next year just like I suspected. They just signed Deandre Jordan, and now all of a sudden look like they could compete for that 8th seed. This pick is not going to be THAT high in a draft that is not as good/deep as this past one in my opinion.

Finally, even if their heart was set on Trae Young, AT LEAST ship Shroeder out of town before you select him! This absolutely killed his trade value. So although the Hawks get a budding Mavs 1st round pick next year, I think they could’ve gotten a more promising 1st round pick or young player for Shroeder…while keeping Doncic.

Thoughts? I know people were VERY split on how they felt about Atlanta’s decision as some loved it and some hated it.

I get your view but i dont agree that they over thought it. They knew who they wanted and took him. Pretty simple actually. They decided Young was BPA. They knew they could get him lower than 3 so they made the trade and got an extra pick, but Young wouldve been taken at 3 by them if there was no trade interest. Since the moment they knew they wanted Young, Im sure theyve tried to move Schroeder, but i dont think theres been anyone willing to take him. I dont think they killed his trade value – Schroeder  killed it himself by saying he’d only (or preferred to) play for the Pacers or Bucks a few weeks ago. Everyone knew by that stage that the Hawks will have to move him, so any possible moves have become even harder since they realised they valued Young above the other lottery picks. If they attach that extra pick they got to Schroeder and dangle it, they can probably get someone quite good back. Myles Turner?

I’m going to disagree. If you send him somewhere like Phoenix, Knicks, or Orlando I think at the VERY least you get a decent player in return (TJ Warren, Mario Hezonja, Michael Beasley) who can provide some value to the Hawks.

It’s not the first round draft pick that ATL wanted, but at least it’s something. Because now you’re risking perhaps getting nothing for him. I say all of this, but Schroeder would have to agree to a long term deal with one of those teams which I think he would. He wants to be on a better team while keeping his role, which is unlikely. There are probably 15 better point guards in the NBA…at least.

It’s weird he wanted Pacers and Bucks, because I’m not certain he’d start for them. San Antonio would be another option if he truly wants to win.

He wants to create the GSW of the East which is a sort a good but bad idea if that makes sense..

Good cause their system has proven to work and by the time they become good GSW will have either dispanded due to Money or Egos or have retired.

The bad: If they miss it is going to be horrible mess and put them back even further in the rebuild hole…

As for how good or bad this draft will look give two years and what they do the next couple of F.A periods.

Me personally I haven’t bought into the Trae hype(I will gladly admit if I am wrong though in 2yrs) and See Luka as the better right now prospect. But how they will both look in 2 seasons is probably more going to be determined by what both teams put around them and how much they actually allowed to show.

Trae is going to get free reign vs Luka maybe held alot more accountable under Carlise. Mavs may have a better intial roster vs Hawks doing a process sort of rebuild..So how they look intially will vary and longterm will depend on who reaches their celing first.

I think Trae Young will kill it on offense. Maybe not immediately. In college he started so hot because that’s how good he is. After a while teams got wise to the fact he was the only player on the team. I wish I could remember the stat, but I read that no one had been more guarded in the NCAA since they started keeping track of that sort of thing. I think he and Huerter are the two best shooters of the draft. However, I think defense will be a very big problem. I don’t know how he solves that.

I respect the Hawks GM, he had a guy he knew he wanted and got an asset in the process – which like someone already said, can be attached to Schroeder in a trade.

I have more faith in him than a lot of people, just because whenever a freshman comes in and completely dominates college from the jump (Durant, AD, Melo, even Michael Beasley) it translates to the NBA more times than not. His size is still being overblown IMO, seeing as how his measurabe are so similar to Steph Currys, who was an oldr player at the time

If it works out for ATL he’ll be looked at like a genius, but even if it doesn’t he still should be commended for at least having a vision and direction for this team, unlike a lot of rebuiding GMs
