How much trouble are the nets in?

the hawks have the nets first round pick and Boston has their first round pick over the next couple years. They lost Pierce and Garnett will probably retire soon. What do they have left? They’ve basically destroyed their future over the next five years and unless they bring in some top free agents things don’t look so hot. The more games they lose, the more Atlanta(this year) and boston(next few years) benefit.
I hope more teams look at this and deciede not to throw away draft picks in the hopes of maybe winning a title.

On a sidenote, I really hope the Nets are lottery team this year the hawks win the title and then in June walk away with either Russel, Myles Turner or Karl Towns. That would be a huge slap in the face for the Nets.

Even if they go far in the playoffs, no one will care. They still can’t sell seats in Phillips Arena, so it’s no point to have wishful thinking for them. Atlanta Hawks shouldn’t be in Atlanta IMO… But back to the Nets…
The issue is Billy King, like he’s maybe the worst GM of my generation. The way he destroyed the Sixers and now the Nets, WHY does he have a job? The Deron Williams trade has killed this franchise. Then you add trading for Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce when they’re no longer 20 point scorers or pulling down 10 rebounds? Why? Joe Johnson for picks sounds cool if your team is set up right. Why bring back Brooke Lopez instead of trying to do a sign and trade with Orlando for D12? These are bone head selfish moves that doesn’t make any sense. Stack your team with aged veterans and hope for the best. It’s dumb and Billy King continues to mortgage futures for current mediocrity.

In his defence Billy Kings expectations were unrealistically high. Mikhail Prokhorov announced the Nets would win a championship within five years when he arrived. Its almost impossible to win a championship in the NBA unless your team has the best player in the league or your the San Antonio.
King may have just been doing his job. Attempting to add as much talent to the roster by depleting any asset. Even if he was told to do that he still did a bad job assembling this team.
On the bright side Mason Plumlee seems like he has a bright future ahead of him. Teams should be interested in Lopez, Williams, and Johnson if they can get 3 or 4 1st round picks and some young players in return they still have their first round picks for every other year. With a successful fire sale, signing of one the top restricted FA’s, and a 1st to 3rd overall pick in next years draft the team would be right on their way in the weaker conference.

they are screwed. its what happens when people with IQ scores below 75 are allowed to make important, critical business decisions. See Knicks and Nets for those examples. The GM position is no joke and you can clearly see how badly a GM can screw things up with poor decision making

Yes, because Billy King is their current GM, but to be honest I don’t think they are in the worst possible situation. What I mean by worst possible situation is they aren’t the 2000 Timberwolves. Just to refresh your guys memories that team lost 3.5 million dollars, and 4 or 5 first round picks. I know that team had a prime time KG on it, but the Wolves still managed to make it to the WCF in 2004. The Net’s have KG, but he isn’t going to give you 20-10 any more. The Nets are in a pickle, but at least it isn’t THAT bad. Also they still have some wiggle room that with a compedent GM (LOL) they can work with.
Lopez and Johnson are expirerings next year, as well as KG this year, so the team is going to be players in free agency. The Nets are global icons who play in one of the hippest/largest burroughs in the world. I just can’t imagine some players not wanting to play for the Nets, even if it is just to promote their brand. Also with new ownership, who knows what direction the team can take?
I also think the pick situation is being blown out of porportion. Lets face it, the Celtics are terrible, so swapping picks with them isn’t really that big of a deal. This year and 2017 are the years that will hurt them, but by then Williams will be off the books and they will have a lot more money to play with.
Look what Ainge has done with the Celtics, and equate that to the nets. If they are smart they will use their cap space to take on contracts and picks, groam undervalued players, and then ship them out if they have value for future assets. It’s a tough way to rebuild, but they can do it if they have the patience. I think the Nets are in a tough spot, but it just looks a lot worse than it actually is

So for 3 first rounders given up they are now left with a near 39 year old KG who will likely retire this summer!
D-Will looks as if he might have played his best basketball already but still has $43 million on his contract after this season. Brook Lopez has missed big chunks of games over the last 4 seasons and will likely opt in for $16.75 million next season. Joe Johnson whilst still a quality player will turn 34 this year and isn’t at the same level he was during his Atlanta peak, the good news is that he is only under contract until 2016, the bad news is he is due nearly $25 million next season making him the highest paid player in the NBA apart from Kobe.
Joe was an elite player during his Atlanta days and was lucky enough to get one of the last 6 year deals in 2010. But whilst he has made 3 All Star games since then he hasn’t averaged over 20ppg in one season since then. These type of contracts were great to give to a guy who was 29 then but fail to consider what these players will be like when they are 34/35.
