I get what Brett brown is doing starting fultz. The franchise views him as a big part of their future and they want him to get some confidence on the court playing with the teams core players. But for all the preseason talk about how he has rediscovered his jump shot and confidence on the court, I haven’t really seen it yet. Sure he made one three and some pull ups in the preseason, but he still looks hesitant as hell to shoot the ball and is clearly still going through some pretty significant mental struggles out there. His shot is still nowhere near where it was coming out of college.

Right now, the offense just clearly flows much better with redick on the court in place of fultz. I understand that philly has invested a ton in fultz and want to give him every opportunity possible to succeed. However, if the team gets off to a slow start, and fultz continues to struggle, how long do you go before you pull the plug on the fultz as starter experiment if your Brett Brown ? I honestly don’t expect it to last much longer.

I think Philly will move him to the bench if they are under .500 on December 1 (unlikely), it seems like they are invested in making it work (or at least rehabbing his value). Fultz has a lot of talent buried under his confidence issues, and he still could be a positive defender as soon as this season, but the fit on this Sixers team may never be there.

Simmons honestly looks like he will be the best point guard in the NBA when Steph retires/declines, and taking the ball out of his hands isn’t going to be the way to maximize him. Even if Embiid becomes a league average 3 point shooter (quite possible), spacing will be limited based on the attention they receive and they need elite spot up shooting around them. Redick and Shamet fit the bill, and Saric has made great strides. The ideal fit would be someone like Avery Bradley, who defends 1s, can shoot, and doesn’t need the ball in his hands. Fultz won’t be fulfilled as a 6th man, and until we see otherwise, he can’t shoot well enough to play with Simmons. He’s also getting minutes he hasn’t earned, which hurts team chemistry. I’d trade him sooner rather than later, but they may need to rehab his value for awhile.

I’m not sure how much we can tell from one game. Especially since Brett Brown’s teams tend to start the season slow (always takes him to Christmas to find his rotations). That and the China trip did them no favors, it was obvious that team was out of sorts last night

I think he’ll stick with Fultz though the end of Nov.

there will be growing pains, but I think Brown should stick to the plan for this season. They will not be better than the Celtics and raptors, so they might aswell develop chemistry this year. This kid needs to work on his confidence and putting him on the bench won’t quite do that for him IMO. Although the spacing issue is glaring, they will still finish in the top 4 in the east. Hell they could have had Tatum for crying out loud and they swapped picks with the Celtics and gave em an additionnal first rounder with that.. That is ludacris.. So you might as well play him and hope he develops fast, cause this looks bad right now

Fultz already has enough mental and confidence issues, moving him to the bench would probably be the final straw. At that point, it’s time to completely move on from him IMO. Keep him in the starting line up for the year.

I also think they should consider starting him the second half of games as well. It seems like it’s just a "fake starting job" that they’ve given him in order to try and make him feel better. That might not be their intention, but it’s certainly how it comes off.

They need to encourage him to shoot the ball when he’s open, especially from 3 point land. He has to if they want the spacing to work and for this to be a long term line up. There will be a painful adjustment phase, but he has to get used to taking 3’s and not just in the corner either.

I would have personally kept JJ as a starter for his experience and shooting but I can see Brett Brown’s logic. JJ may be able to do more damage as part of the 2nd unit and if Fultz needs to get his confidence back they may feel he can get more open shots whilst on court with the starters. Plus they might be looking longer term and when they drafted him he would have been seen as being a key starter so they are sticking to their plans.

Personally I would give him at least until Allstar to show some progress and if by then he isn’t  you make a starter in name only and not in minutes…

Honestly I’m surprised they chose to start Fultz. I think the best choice for Fultz right now would be as 6th man. That way he’d have a better chance to excel and stay aggressive. I’m not sure how well Fultz will play alongside Ben Simmons until he regains full confidence in his shot.

If they winning then he stays. If they start losing and it’s his fault then you change it..winning solves everyting.

I don’t understand why Boston & Phila get compared like this

Boston has 2 outstanding young players in Brown & Tatum but they are Filled w/ experienced, playoff battle hardened Veterans up & down that line up who are All in their Primes

Al Horford is 32m Kyrie Irving is 27, Hayward is 29, Morris 29, even their reserves like Smart & Rozier have 4 Years of playoff experience

Phila’s core are All between 20 – 24 years old. Embiid & Saric are 24, Simmons is 22, Fultz is 20, prized Rookies who Phila expects to contribute off the bench Landry Shamet & Zhaire Smith are 21 & 19 respectively.

Covington at 27 is Phila’s Only Veteran starter & JJ Reddick is 33 or 34 (not sure exactly) & Obviously Reddick should be the starter right now but I understand what Brett Brown is thinking – against Most of the NBA Reddick & players like Bellineli & Ilyasova were really good

But against Boston Reddick, Belinelli & Ilyasova were absolutely exploited & ripped apart of Defense — Joel Embiid was Constantly out of position b/c he has to cover So much ground b/c The Celtics were going by Reddick, Belinelli, TJ McConell like Turnstiles

According to Next Gen stats Embiid is forced to cover More space in terms of total mileage than almost Any other player in the NBA

So even though Fultz is not really ready to start against the likes a Boston or Toronto or Golden State, Fultz is a superior athlete w/ great size at 6’5” & length w/ a 6’10” womg span, Brown needs to get Phila’s starting line up to the point were where they can switch & no matter who is guarding who they can guard their man 1 V 1.

Brown also compared bringing Reddick off the bench to how the Spurs used Ginobli & it lengthened Manu’s career. So while Fultz gains experience & takes his bumps & bruises JJ Reddick is still playing at a high level. They can find out what they have in Fultz right now this season rather than waiting

Either way, I believe Phila’s core won’t hit their prime for 3 more seasons when young stars like Embiid & Simmons are 27 & 25 years old.

That is like saying interceptions are the only reason Nathan Peterman won’t start for the Bills.
