Coming up with comparisons for young NBA prospects is super popular in todays social media age. Sometimes they prove correct and sometimes the comparisons are wayyyy off.

With the power of hindsight, who should we have been comparing these prospects too?

For example, Nikola Jokic was compared to Nikola Vucevic and Pero Antic online

But instead we really should have been leaning closer to Arvydas Sabonis

Throw out some other comparisons that make much more sense now with hindsight

I think comparing DeShawn Stevenson to anyone not named Michael Jordon would be a good place to start… haha

Stevenson was a two-legged/foot leaper, so they should have disqualified him on the comparisons. Aside from that notion, technology wasn’t what it is today as far as the 2000 draft class was combined for the worst class ever.

Devin Booker was being compared to Korver. Should have been Ray Allen  or James Harden.

Kendal Marshall was being compared to Kidd. Should have gone undrafted.

Don’t know who to compare them to now, but I saw a lot of Wiggins-TMac and Jabari-Melo comparisons before the 2014 draft

I see quite a bit of Carmelo in Jabari actually. I never saw much McGrady in Wiggins. Booker, Harden, and Allen are all very different players so I’m not convinced I see why you think Booker resembles them. I’m also fairly certain the consensus on Kendall Marshall was that he compares to Mark Jackson, not Jason Kidd. I found that to be spot on.

Some glaring examples for me were Victor Oladipo and Cody Zeller. Victor was compared to Tony Allen: I didn’t like the comparison then and we can clearly see he resembles a younger Dwyane Wade in his Miami days. Zeller doesn’t resemble Aldridge much at all. I think he’s poised for a breakout season, still, he doesn’t have the shooting prowess Aldridge makes a career out of. I found comparisons for Justise Winslow pretty weird also (Harden/Chandler).

I love Rondae Hollis-Jefferson and I think he’s not very much like Bruce Bowen. He’s not as potent as Shawn Marion, but his quirky shooting mechanics and ability to score coupled with his quick hands and quality defense leads me to believe he’s closer to someone like Marion than say, Bowen, a classic 3D player. Hollis has yet to develop into someone like Bowen and I personally think he’s well on his way to being a better player anyway.

Be that as it may, comparisons aren’t going to be accurate anyway. Some are made because evaluators believe some players can work their way up to their comparisons.

Side note, isn’t it weird how great Denver is at evaluating big men? They drafted Gobert, traded for Nurkic on draft night, and drafted Jokic.

I’m not sure how great Denver is at evaluating big men after drafting Gobert and then dealing him for a second round pick seconds later, obviously drastically under evaluating him!

Denver drafted Gobert for utah….. it was all done before Denver even picked him. The Jazz were high on him. If Denver is so good at drafting big men why did they trade him for nothing?

I think that Rondae Hollis-Jefferson is similar to Gerald Wallace.

I think Kawhi was compared to Iguodala?

One of the very rare occasions when an MJ or Kobe comparison would have been more accurate.

Also, Kawhi’s uncle is like the casino where MJ lost a million dollars.

Greg Oden to Sam Bowie or Darko Milicic may have been more appropriate

Anthony bennett- was compared to Charles barkley/Larry Johnson..Yet is out of the league..Speaking of anyone know why he isn’t in the league? Is he a knuckle head or just can’t play? Bet that the cavs wished they had taken either Oladipo or C.J over this guy lol.

Devin Booker-Was compared to Kyle korver yet is one of 3 players depending on whose film you watch: Bradley beal,Klay thompson or Rip hamilton(the guy who he said he modeled his game after)

Jahlil okafor: Tim Duncan/Al jefferson sort of head scratching how this guy is not suceeding yet the same time not…Maybe he just needs the right team and he will turn it around for them…

Dangelo Russell-Steph curry yet I see more Mike conley/Chauncey billups in his game…Really hope he gets its it..Just needs to mature a bit.

Michael beasley -Melo  clone yet couldn’t stay focused enough to make it work…Has seemingly started to get it a little better after China 2nd stint.

O.J Mayo-Was compared to Kobe coming up through College ranks then fell right off the grid and even got busted doing illegal things :S He is they kind of player who you hope gets 1 last chance at redemption…As that skill set was not to shabby…

Harrison Barnes was Luol Deng or Ray Allen. Deng was fair enough but Allen – certainly not the shooter or off ball ability.

I can see some of Melo in Jabari and both finally made it to the play offs this year!

With Wiggins as T-Mac were we talking about the raw early Raptors version T-Mac or the Magic/Rockets era superstar?

That is the thing with comparisons when a player becomes a superstar we often forget what they were like when they too were in college or just entered the league.
