McDunkinThe Catholic Central High School boys basketball team, located in Windsor, Ontario, has a pretty good player in Jonathon Nicola. The 6-foot-9 center is so good that his coach put together the workout video above, because, as he told the Windsor Star last year, Nicola had a shot at going pro. That dream is probably dead, though, because Nicola is apparently a grown-ass man.
According to the Windsor Star, Nicola, who is from South Sudan, has been arrested for violating the Immigration Refugee Protection Act, and is believed to be 30 years old. For the last six months, Nicola has been posing as a 17-year-old student, and was even living with his basketball coach.
Nicola isn’t the first prep star to lie about his age, but he may be the most brazen. A 20-year-old pretending to be 18 is one thing, but ball really must be life for a 30-year-old man who would look his coaches and teammates in their faces and say, “Yeah, man, I’m totally 17" right before dunking on some poor freshman. Assuming he eventually gets clear of his legal trouble, Nicola probably has a decent rec-league career ahead of him. That jumper in the video above is pretty nice, even for an old guy.

NBAjunkie81Participantmake a life in Canada or the States…….. & all I had to do was lie about my age,……. I think most people would take that deal……
Once he got there & starts playing…… He can hardly tell the coaches the truth when they start pushing him as a big time Recruit…… He probably had to just play it out at that point……..
I’m not saying what he did was right……. I’m just saying that I could see how it could Mushroom on him……
But if some white guys showed up in my village in the Sudan……. Walked up to me & offered me a Ticket out……. I’d take it…… The dude looks no younger than 45 years old in that Video…… So it’s on the Coaches….. I think they "Wanted" to be lied to…..
BTW – I absolutely Luv the "It’s Not Thon Maker" disclaimer……. lol…..

Dazzling Dunks and Basketball BloopersParticipantIf this were 10 years ago I would have thought you were talking about Greg oden.

phila9012ParticipantI am surprised this doesn’t happen more often. It happens some in baseball, espn or some place did a story on it. Even if it could get you just a college scholarship it would be worth it. Like NBA Junkie said there are too many incentives there for the players to say no. Even these competitive high schools it makes sense to try this because if as a coach your team does good, that could help you get a job in college or at a higher level

Hype MachineThon Maker is probably actually younger than listed.
When Australian officials had to guess his age upon processing his refugee status they would have done so based on his Appearance. His bro is also huge. They probably figured they were older than they really were instead of being 7footers which is unlikely.

omphalosParticipantJust on Thon Maker, my friend actually went to high school with Thon and is friends with his sister and knew him when his voice hadn’t broken yet.
He’s definitely not five years older or anything like that.
