Tongue-Out-Like-23ParticipantI’m a combo guard with a great 3pt shot, good passing ability and lock down D. I just got back from the gym where I shot around for a while and then some guys got there and wanted to run a game. We ended losing that game 45-37. I had myself about 9 points (4-6 FG, 1-1 from 3pt) and 4 assists but FIVE TURNOVERS. All of them were pretty much stupid. I would over dribble and I dribbled it off my foot once and other times I just lost the handle. Another time I got caught in traffic and had to pick up my dribble. It’s pretty much my biggest and only weakness in my game.
Anybody know of drills or anything I can do to improve my ball handling?
Any help would me much appreciated

HaleParticipantI’m not sure of any drills. But it’s a good thing you keep track of turnovers, that is the only thing I keep track of when I play. You always want to cut those down.

Tongue-Out-Like-23ParticipantYeah.. whenever I have a large amount of turnovers. I feel as if I was the reason we lost. That’s 5 posessions we didn’t get. That can be about 5-12 points.

OhCanada-ParticipantBall Handling is a touchy subject, you can dribble around by yourself doing individual drills and feel like your Derrick Rose after enough practice but if you dont dribble in game, with game experience it will all be for nothing. To truely train your dribbles you need a dedicated scrimmage partner to pressure you and your dribbles with lockdown pressure defense.
Ball handling is not about crossovers and flash it is about having control over your bodies momentum, and making sure you make smart decisions. Work on angles, ways to crate space easily by protecting the ball with your body, and just make smart decisions. Also footwork is very important. Im no coach but I had the same issue as you when I used to play at a very competitive level and all I did was shadow a good friend and play hours on end.
Although your already completing the first step in learning, that first step is being able to ask for help and listen to those who want to help you. Im sure you will find your way.

mikeyvthedonParticipantEver think of using google for some of these things? I mean, their is this place called youtube, and it has videos that give you ideas for dribbling drills. Much better than reading about it on the internet is actually seeing them being done. I mean, you can practice dribbling with two balls, you can do figure eights, you can just practice dribbling with your off hand much more than with your strong hand. But, people, google is your friend, you can do research with that as a resource. When I want to look something up, I look it up on either a site I know will give me information or on google. Was there really a need to make a post about you being a turnover machine? Probably not, practice, dribbling, youtube, better player, go!

Last time I checked, this is a basketball forum. Meaning there are plently of people that play basketball. Why am I going to google search? Does google play basketball? No. How about I ask people with experience rather than rely on google and get on some website where the creator of it hasn’t played a lick in his life.
I would rather post on forums where I can ask questions on how to improve myself rather than watch a stupid video and not be able to ask questions. Catch my drift? All around, it’s better to directly speak with people on how to improve yourself and to ask questions.

mikeyvthedonParticipantI have had the privilege of knowing about basketball videos with drills. Those things are on the internet now! Isn’t that special? I catch your drift homes, just saying, it is hard to help you will you are righting things on a website rather than seeing it be done. Look up Pete Maravich training videos man. He played basketball. Look up Red Auerbach and Larry Bird. Those guys were involved with the game. Look at the advice you have been given. It is not insulting any of these people. It is hard to coach you on dribbling on a message board. Most dribbling activities or coaching has diagrams, for a reason. But, you play basketball, you know these things. Come on dude, you have to know what I was saying.

nateoak10ParticipantANd my tip would be just dont try and be super fancy if thats not you, i rarely go between the legs or behind the back but make really good use of keeping the ball low, weaving around and switching my hands up a lot, it keeps people unsure of what youll do. dont go beyond your skill set . in games maybe step in for a off the dribble jumper, then come in for a layup and just keeping working your way up

goneParticipantDont pound the rock then, everytime you get the ball you dont have to dribble right away. Size your defender up give em a couple jab steps see how he reacts, attack his top foot if he is shading you. If not…..give that rock up cause he is strapping your ass lol jk jk

ilike.panochasParticipantDribbling drills are nice, but heres a tip that will help you further; carry/bring your basketball with you at all times. I know you might look stupid/weird carrying a ball around with you all the time but try it, for example if your going to go for a walk to get something at your local liquor store, walk while dribbling a basketball in your hand. If your going to a library bring a ball with you and dribble the ball while walking to your destination. If you do this everyday, dribbling becomes second nature and it trains you how to dribble without looking at the ball or looking down, keeping your head straight.

mikeyvthedonParticipantLook up Pete Maravich dribbling. I kind of felt like his legendary videos were common knowledge. I grew up watching a lot of basketball videos, and I learned a number of drills. Watch Pete and be amazed. Plus, dribbling more is the obvious way of, you know, getting better at dribbling.
