festar35ParticipantI’m looking towards the future in Memphis and I feel that Mike Conley leaving could be a good thing for them.
Hear me out, I think that Memphis despite being a good team is in that middling ground and I can’t see them getting a big free agent name. Gasol is a fantastic player, but he needs that running mate and they only have good players at best. If Conley leaves it could start a rebuild which I think would be beneficial if they find the right trade partner.
Honestly if I were them I would be on the phone to Boston about their 3 draft picks in relation to Gasol and start that youth movement. Boston need a C and Gasol would be fantastic with Boston and he would have an All-Star running mate in Thomas and solid contributors on the roster as well. Boston would also be a destination other big names may head.
C.Gasol PF.Sullinger/Olynyk SF.Crowder SG.Bradley PG.Thomas they bring back Turner as 6th man it’s a very nice start and potentially contender in the East.I know the lottery hasn’t been yet, but Memphis needs talent everywhere so if the pick is 1-5 they could grab a guy like Ingram, Simmons, Bender, Murray who all show some great potential. They have Stephenson who I think they bring back who is still young and could have some fun as I imagine he would get the ball a lot. They could ask for another late pick or a young talent like Smart/Rozier/Hunter and look to build in the draft over next couple of years and get some exciting young guys in the mean time. Z-Bo’s 10mil may be harder to move, but I’m sure they could find a buyer.
Other players would need to be involved for salary purpose, but I am mainly saying I believe the Championship window in Memphis is closed and they should look to the future of the franchise.

ExumInfernoParticipantHere would be my first offer.
M Gasol to Boston.
To Memphis, non-guaranteed A Johnson and J Jerebko, J Young, Boston 2016 first, Memphis get their future 1st back from Boston.
Memphis may demand the Brooklyn pick, but Gasol is an injured player and they are not in a position to demand a lot. The bigger point, that Memphis pick might be a top 6 pick in the future. Memphis probably don’t want to be a bad team in three or four years and see Boston using their high pick. Maybe add Rozier, and Boston get Vince too in the deal.
Grizzlies clear lots of money, or keep the players, get a pick now and a pick that they used to own back.
M Gasol is on the wrong side of 30 to get a huge amount back in trade. Broken feet for centers can be really bad news. His rebounding and blocks rate, and FG%, are dropping. Over the last year, his PER has dropped by 4 points.
Memphis need to move him and other veterans, especially if Conley goes, but I can’t see a huge return.
If Memphis fans expect a lot for M Gasol, think about the P Gasol trade. The ending contract of Kwame, a few throw-ins and two late first rounders.

festar35ParticipantWhy not? I can appreciate that you don’t agree with the proposal, but at least tell us why.
Do you think Memphis can win a title with the team they have if Conley returns? What sort of free agents do you honestly think they will attract? They need a superstar and I’m sorry but not one of them is going to Memphis by choice and Memphis don’t have the assets to trade for one either.
Rather than slide into mediocrity why not at the very least go out and get some exciting prospects that may not win games initially, but would sell tickets. (Stephenson is entertaining and is the kind of player I am talking about, he still has potential to be very good)
Ultimately is the goal for every NBA team to win a Championship? (Unsure about Philadelphia the last couple of years). Sticking with a bunch of aging vets that would be of more benefit to a contender won’t get that done.
To me Gasol will age well as his game is not an athletic one and never has been, what gets him through is his skill, look at Duncan, Nowitzki and Pau they are all very capable despite aging.

BiggysmallsParticipantWhy would Gasol sign a max contract with them only to get traded the following offseason? That doesn’t seem like a great way to run a franchise.
Then again, their owner from what I’ve heard is a nut job, so nothing would shock me.
I think from their perspective, they’ve been good, they’ve been not far away and from a business perspective, you have a team that will win 45-55 games a year, and compete in the playoffs. They may never win it all, but they can be really successful.
Think Conley stays, Gasol stays and they try to fill in around them.
Though as a Wolves fan, I hope they inexplicably can Joerger because I like him as a coach and hope he’s our coach 🙂

zolaParticipantIt’s not a good moment to start rebuilding cause next year Grizzlies pick is going to Denver
When’s healthy, this team is top 6-8 in NBA which is not bad for such small market

HitsterParticipantWith Gasol being injured would Boston offer up a lot for him I wonder plus he is the wrong side of 30. Memphis know Boston have loads of assets and wouldn’t give up their best player unless they got the best possible deal. Likewise Danny Ainge has a great hand of cards to play and will consider all options before making any major moves.
I still wonder if Pau Gasol might end up at Boston or Memphis. Going to Boston he can ride shotgun on a young team and gives them leadership and championship experience. At Memphis he teams up with his brother and can be part of a 3 man big rotation including Z-Bo. Pau and Z-Bo are mid 30’s now so can mind their minutes in a 3 man rotation.

Memphis MadnessParticipantI would try to shop either Conley or Marc Gasol. Preferably both.
I don’t see any way that we can pass the Spurs or Thunder, much less the Warriors.
We are (at best the 5th team in a four team conference).
If we get swept this year (looking very possible), then if we get beat again 4-0 or 4-1 next year then time will be running out.
We could reload NOW. Or, WAIT until Gasol and Conley lose more value.
If we could get picks and players from Boston for Marc and Mike I would highly consider it.
I mean I would take Marcus Smart, Amir Johnson, Jonas Jerebko, Jae Crowder, 16, and 22 for Mike Conley and Marc Gasol in a second.
I would also settle for EITHER Smart or Crowder plus the rest of the trade package but the numbers don’t work out.
