LOS ANGELES – The event that everyone knew would eventually happen is about to become official.

After one of the top rookie seasons in league history, Clippers forward Blake Griffin is expected to be named the NBA’s Rookie of the Year, an Associated Press source is reporting. Griffin put up averages of 22.5 points, 12.1 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game. He was drafted No. 1 overall in 2009 out of Oklahoma, and missed what would have been his rookie season with a broken kneecap.

Because he didn’t play in a single regular season game that year, Griffin is officially considered a rookie for the 2010-11 season.

Griffin became the first rookie All-Star since Yao Ming, won the league’s dunk contest and was named Western Conference Rookie of the Month all six times.

Certainly deserved it, but there should be an asterisk on his award. Still don’t think he should be considered a rookie after he redshirted last year, and played in actual preseason games and went through training camp last year. Should be called a redshirt rookie. But nonetheless, he had a great year and surprised many this year with his play.
