Arc12345ParticipantI just noticed Grayson Allen moved into the lottery on the mock draft. I have to say I’m a little surprised, but not totally in shock.
What do you guys think? Is this guy a potential lottery pick this year? Will he even declare this year? I always imagined he’d stay all 4 years, but I think it might be better for his career to leave early.
In most cases, I support guys getting there degrees. But I can’t help but think about Drew Neitzel deciding to stay for his senior year at Michigan State, and then going undrafted when he was a borderline late first round pick the year before.
I’m no Duke fan, but I like Allen. Good size for the SG position at 6’4.5, which some may say is undersized, but I think is more than fine in today’s game if you can jump, which he can (think Dwayne Wade). Has a great stroke. Decent vision. Good defender. Still a lot to learn and improve on, but I like the upside. Certainly wouldn’t mind seeing him in a Hawks uniform.
As a side note, it’s puzzling to me not to see a guy like Valentine in the late lottery. But that’s another conversation.

Memphis MadnessParticipantAnd now boys and girls, this is the part of the program where we absolutely CANNOT under any circumstances compare Grayson Allen to Russell Westbrook.
Grayson Allen comparisons limited to: Bobby Sura, Danny Ainge on steroids, Rex Chapman, one of Rick Barry’s kids, and, you know, maybe even TEEN WOLF, but never, never, NEVER THE WESTBROOK!

ChewyParticipantbeing such a perfect comparison, I don’t understand why people keep trying to find new comparisons for Grayson. We got a good one, lets leave it at that.

RUDEBOY_Participantmaybe late lottery to early 20s if he decides to come out.he’s a very aggressive scorer and a good athlete.he still needs work on his overall game.
i heard that his parents were rich,so money isnt an issue.but alot of kids want to make a name for themselves .and with the attention he’s getting and him playing well,it wouldnt surprise me if he comes out.

Kwame33ParticipantI can do you one better. I went to a ritzy private school in HS and knew a guy named Weldon Garlington. The most affluent name I have ever heard, honestly. Funny thing was that he was black and from the hood, we were both only there b/c we were good athletes haha.

Arc12345ParticipantCan you all read? I wasn’t comparing him to Westbrook. I also wasn’t comparing him to Dwayne Wade but his athletic ability honestly isn’t far off. I was simply saying although some may consider him undersized, I think 6’4+ with great athletic ability is perfect size for an NBA shooting guard.
So read before you give me negatives. I wasn’t comparing him to anyone. Idiots.

OhioBballFanParticipantComparing any human on the planet to Westbrook is difficult for me. Its one thing to be as athletic as he is, but it’s another thing to have the stamina to sustain that level of athleticism throughout an entire game. Someone like Steph is capable of getting up to do some pretty cool dunks, but I think he conserves his energy for other parts of his game. In that way, I think Grayson will have to be the same way. That being said, I think Grayson is capable of playing with some of the same fire that Westbrook plays with, so I think I know what you meant throwing his name around with Westbrook’s name. I don’t think he’s afraid to mix it up with people a little bit. I would be interested in seeing how Westbrook’s game might be complimented by someone with Grayson’s shot and overall game.

SpaceghostParticipantShould be two points for bringing back the name Bobby Sura..teamed with the Lil Alien ( Sam Cassell) and Heisman QB Charlie Ward.. I liked that team ..Anyway.. Athleticly BOY Grayson mite be even a lil better than Bobby, But as far as handle and being able to create his own shot Bobby was much better. But i can say that is a good comparsion. Put Grayson in a Hawks uniform and he will be doing the same thing Tim hardaway jr doing. SITTING

tuck243ParticipantD Wade was one of the quickest guards in the league. With one of the best first steps of all time… Which is something Grayson Allen doesn’t have… Yea, he can dunk, but most of his dunks he doesn’t really get up… I’ll be willing to bet his arm length is a big reason for this… I wouldn’t be surprised if he had one of the biggest wing spans in the draft. But he also has a motor, which make people think he’s faster than what he is.
I think he plays out of control sometimes and I lowkey hate how we pigeon hole certain players into stereotypes because of height, body type, handedness, and/or race. Just because Grayson is white doesn’t mean he plays like Sura. And just because he’s 6’4 doesn’t mean he’s similar to D Wade..

Kwame33ParticipantIf you’ve watched the two play you would agree that Bob Sura is about as close an NBA comparison as you can get for Grayson Allen. Obviously no two players are going to be exactly alike. The fact that they’re both have the same height, body type, handedness, and race is an added bonus.

tuck243ParticipantI think it’s a similar situation in saying D. Russell has a similar game to Manu and Harden. I’ve seen the same thing said about Julius Randle and Zach Randolph (a player he plays NOTHING like)…

TarHeelRavenParticipantGrayson Allen is a good player. Is he a lottery pick in my opinion? No. I think he’d be an above average athlete in the NBA, but he wouldn’t stand out. He’s not a good ball handler and and has no wiggle to his game. He’s basically a straight line drive guy. The Duke hater in me will remind you guys how he was basically rejected at the rim everytime he drove against Kentucky with NBA size. He was absolutely unconscious in two games in New York against VCU and Georgetown. Without Grayson I believe Duke loses both those games. Grayson needs to show me he can go on the road in hostile environments and dominate. If he goes on the road in the ACC and plays like he has played against VCU and Georgetown then he might be lottery material

OhioBballFanParticipantAthletically, Bob Sura may not be a bad comp. But look at Grayson’s advanced shooting stats and offensive efficiency. He is a phenomenal shooter (unlike Sura) and he’s athletic enough to keep people honest with his ability to drive and finish creatively around the rim. He has a great mid range game that reminds me of Jeremy Lin, but his 3 point shooting is significantly better (46% right now) Everyone wants to compare him to other athletic white guys, but his shot makes him different than a lot of other players.
I don’t think there is a great comp in the NBA right now. Besides Lin, I would compare him to two other guys. I’m not saying he’s going to end up being nearly as good as any of these guys, but similarities in his game make him intriguing. The first is Steph, although his body type and release may not make this a perfect comp. He has a phenomenal shot and his shooting stats are comparable (if not better) than Steph’s at Davidson. Like Steph, he is playing the 2 guard a lot right now rather than the point, and needs to improve his handle (Steph admits his handle has improved). His vision is better than what people give him credit for. I also think his leadership skills are similar to Stephs.
I also see a little Chauncey Billups in his game. They’re about the same size and length, and their shots look similar. I think they possess the same leadership skills, and he reminds me of Billups in how he handles the ball.
Overall, I think he’s more than capable of being a Top 10 pick in the NBA and I really hope he is drafted on the right team. He still has something to prove. I think he wants to be great, but we will see. ive been really impressed how he’s tried to build up the people around him (Kennard,Ingram) after he had a couple 30 point games. The more his game becomes reminscent of Stephs, the better off he will be, although I think his game will look differently than Stephs when he’s in the NBA. I really hope he’s drafted on a team that asks him to do more than be a stand still shooter like he was last year, although his ability to hit that shot is lethal when you add it to the rest of his game. All in all, I think he could develop into a different player than any other player in the NBA. If he were teamed up with Porzingis in New York, or placed in another situation with a really good big that can defend the rim, I’d like to see how good he could get. He seems to like playing in The Garden.

Kwame33ParticipantLin and Billups passing and dribbling ability greatly separate them from Allen. For Allen to be comparable to them in those attributes anytime soon would call for an immense improvement on his part. Allen doesn’t project as PG, that would spell the destruction of his career.

OhioBballFanParticipantAllen has a lot to improve with his handle, admittedly. But I think that’s one facet of someone’s game that can be improved. Steph improved his handle substantially since he got in the NBA. And I don’t look at Lin’s handle or Billup’s handle and think there is a huge gap between their ball handling skills and Grayson’s right now. If he can continue to shoot the way he does now, it will make up for not having an elite handle.
I really want to see if his game continues to improve the rest of the year. I think his passing ability is already better than people give him credit for. He was looking to establish himself as a scorer at the beginning of the year, and has started to look for his teammates more the last few games. I think people will have a different perception of his passing game by the end of the year. Utah will be a good test.

OhioBballFanParticipantIt’s probably too early to compare him to anyone right now to be honest. Way too early to say that he can/will be nearly as good as Billups or Steph or even Lin, especially with this small sample size we have and before the ACC games and tourney. My mistake.
I am excited to see how the rest of the year pans out and whether or not Allen can raise his shooting numbers back up. Even though I was comparing him to Steph and Billups, I don’t think it is a question that he’s the second best NBA prospect on his team after Ingram. There’s also no chance that he will surpass Ben Simmons or Labiesierre in draft stock, nor should he, and I wouldn’t be suprised if he did not crack the top 10 of whichever draft he chooses to enter. Wherever he goes, he will need more time to develop than a lot of other guys in this draft. We can reexamine this question in a couple months.

r377ParticipantI know historically white guys from Duke struggle transitioning from college to the pros but Grayson Allen is an interesting prospect.
He is a great shooter. He is not just a one dimensional shooter, he can take it to the hoop. Good IQ and passer. Above average athletically (did you see his high school dunks?)
Will be on my radar come March….
