I was a big GR3 fan last season. But the more I watch him, I have serious concerns about his offensive skillset. He’s still a talented prospect who shouldn’t slip past the mid-first round even in this draft. But he’s a perfect example of someone who could easily be drafted by the wrong team. He’s erratic and has trouble creating his own shot. At times he reminds me of Alex Poythress- a great finisher around the rim who is hard to stop in the open floor. He still has plenty of supporters though. What are the forum’s thoughts on GRIII?

GR3 and Michigan are having a rough start to the season. Mind you it’s early but he’s shooting 35% from the field and 16% from three. I’ve never liked the Iggy comparison outside the fact that they are both 6’6 and great athletes. Iggy is a much better ball handler,play maker, and defender for that matter. To expect GR3 to become the creator that Iggy is just isn’t fair. The fact that this site still has him at #7 makes believe this is top heavy draft with a big fall off. It’s early and he’s got time to right the ship but he’s also got a lot to prove.

Poythress has changed his game to be somewhat of a glue guy. He’s rebounding at a high rate, playing D, and helping move the ball around. That being said I don’t know how he’ll translate to the league.

 I kinda like your point about him being similar to Alrx Poytress in that aspect. I’ve always felt that they were kinda of similar. Both need to be more aggressive , have great frames, are great finishers and seem like very high level character kids. However both share the same weaknesses of not being aggressive enough and both havin inconsistent shots, and lacking the ability to create much offense for themselves. For GR3 and Poythress it will depend on shooting.  Can they shoot the ball?  Can they hit a 3 pointer?  The corner 3 is HUGE right now, especially for small forwards.  If they can do that they will be lotto picks.  If not, they could get passed by a guy like James McAdoo who is also a solid athlete, but a bit bigger than GR3.  Between those three guys and Doug McDermott, the mid to late lottery should be a good place to find small forward depth.

 GRIII will be exposed this season- but at least he’s finding his game before he goes pro. His role last season was so limited, the NBA would have been a massive adjustment. He may slip a few spots compared to last year’s draft, but he’ll have a better career from this extra year. 

As for the talk about this draft being top heavy… Kinda disagree. Christon, Saric, Cauley-Stein, James Young, Gary Harris, Mcadoo. These are players who could go around the 10th pick. Solid prospects for that late in a draft. Obviously, they’re not on the level of Wiggins and co., but any late lottery team will be happy to have those type of options.

Honestly, I don’t even see him coming out this year.  He’s so raw, he could end up being a 3-4 year player.  Same with McGary.

On the other hand, if McGary, GR3, and Stauskas all come back next year for their JR years, Michigan could be scary.

So let me correct what I said early, I think the site should have WCS, Seldon, Young, and Harris ahead of GR3, can’t comment on Christon since I’m yet to see him play.
