 I think that 20 years from now, there will be kids out there who loves statistics and the history of basketball who will be scrolling through Basketball Reference and will see the collection of talented individual players on certain teams and wonder how they did so bad.  For example

2013-2014 Detroit Pistons

With Josh Smith, Greg Monroe, and Andre Drummond all in the frontcourt and all relatively in their primes, along with Brandon Jennings and Rodney Stuckey, and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, who looks to be headed for a good career, this team will sure look like it should have been an Eastern Conference contender, not a team that went 29-53 and had two coaches.  But stats don’t show Josh Smith’s low basketball IQ and the lack of spacing for this team when a lot of these guys can;t shoot from outside a lick.

2012-2013 LA Lakers

An assemblage of Kobe, Dwight, Gasol, and Nash, along with an aged Antawn Jamison and Metta World Peace and a young Jodie Meeks (and no huge injury problems) might look like a team that should’ve been competing with Lebron and co.  for the title.  But instead, they were stuck competing for a spot in the playoffs.  They had three coaches over the course of the season and prior to a midseason run, were not even in the playoff picture.

2005-2006 76ers

This team consisted of Allen Iverson at his peak, scoring 33 PPG that season, Chris Webber at age 32, still scoring over 20 per game, and a young Andre Iguodala starting to come into his own and doing a little bit of everything as Iverson scored the points.  It also had young Kyle Korver lighting it up on the wings as he averaged over 2 3’s per game, and Samuel Dalembert anchoring the post and blocking 2.5 per game.  This team was set at every position and no starter missed more than 16 games, but dysfunction prevailed and the Sixers went 38-44 and missed the playoffs as Iverson’s time in Philly was coming to an end.

The 2001-2002 LA Clippers I remember had so much raw talent and potential in that team.

 I really thought they would be good together for some years with: Elton Brand as the centerpiece, Michael Owalakandi, Corey Maggette, Jeff McInnis, Darius Miles, Queintin Richardson, Keyon Dooling and Lamar Odom. So much potential but also so immature.

I thought more highly of the team after they traded Darius Miles for Andre Miller. Remember that he was the league leader in assists and the heir apparent for PG behind Kidd. They surprisingly won fewer games with him.

The Malone/Payton Lakers had to  the most stacked team on paper.

Going back a bit furher a Hawks team with Domoique, Reggie Theuss, and Moses among others did nothing.  The Sixers of the early 80’s were similarly stacked but for the most part held back by the Celtics.

Had studs like Tyrus Thomas, Matt Carroll, Lebron Stopper Borrs Diaw, DJ Augustin, Bismack "Get that Sh*t outta her" Biyambo, Desagna Diop, Corey Maggette, and others. Team went 7-59, but with that talent, I would have thought 12-54
