steven27Participantany draft chances for these 2 ? both undersized SG´s
Geron Johnson
Norman Powell0 - Posted on: Mon, 11/04/2013 - 8:01am #847451

MalcolmxParticipantI think Geron Johnson would have a better shot out of the two. Both are undersized but very athletic with super long arms.As a matter of fact Powell’s wingspan is 6’11. I feel Geron is just flat out better than Norman though. He can shoot the ball. He can handle the ball and has a few different counter moves in his tool box. He isn’t a PG but he can read the floor and make the appropiate pass. Johnson is also younger than a lot of college seniors. He just turned 21 in September. As we all know a lot of athletes reclassify when they are in grade school or high school. Geron Johnson seems to have not done that. He would be a college graduate by draft day and still be 21 years old. His main drawback is his off the court issues. He had been kicked out of Juco I believe before he got to Memphis and I believe he had an arrest before. If he can put his troubles behind him I can see him getting selected in the Second round.Memphis as a whole I believe will do well this year.

MalcolmxParticipantI am aware of Norman Powell being a Jr and Geron Johnson being a Sr. I thought you were asking if both prospects had a chance to be drafted in the 2014 draft.

qDizzle32ParticipantEvery year there’s a few guy’s who nobody would have projected being drafted who end up being drafted anyway. For instance last year there was Arsalan Kazemi and Romero Osby. As there are also a few who surprisingly go undrafted such as CJ Leslie and Myck Kabongo. I watched a lot of UCLA games last year and Norman Powell has a good outside shot along with his athleticism, however him being 6’3 limits his pro potential. If he could become more efficient with his consistency from three point range, maybe he could have a shot. However, Powell still has one more year of eligibility after this year. I love Geron Johnson’s game too, haven’t watched him as much as Powell but as of right now I’d say he might have a shot at being a second half of the second round (45-60) if teams wouldn’t mind using a pick on Johnson. It really sucks how being 6’3 and under as a non point guard takes away so much from your NBA game. Or else Russ Smith would be guaranteed to at least make a roster.

Memphis MadnessParticipantGeron Johnson thinks he will be drafted. Not sure who he has talked to though. He has the feel of a solid combo guard off the bench. It might come down to defense for him. He is a good defender, and if he can keep it up and be known as one of the better lock down defenders in college then I think that will help him get drafted. Although, the new hand checking rule might hurt him.
He has good size, similar to Russell Westbrook, with a game that reminds me a bit of Derrick Rose when he played at Memphis. If we make a deep tourney run and he gets it going then he should be looked at as a possible late first round pick.
Hopefully he works on his point guard skills (even though U of M has 3 or 4 of them), which would probably be his best position in the league given his size. With his size, strength, athleticism, and defense I think he is a better prospect than Joe Jackson.

HaleParticipantJohnson should be drafted somewhere in the 2nd round. He’s a jack of all trades guy and he’s quite the athlete. For a small stretch of last season he was the best player Memphis had and was putting up monster numbers.

MalcolmxParticipantNorman Powell has a 6’11 wingspan with an 8’4.5 standing reach. Is he still undersized when you factor in those things?Because most 6’5 6’6 guys in the league stack up with the same measurements.

llpereznorman powell has a few things going for him. He is listed 6-4, but has nba strength, length and athleticism. He is the best defender on the bruins.
However, he is a very inconsistent shooter. His stroke is solid looking, but he really needs to start knocking them down. He is a below average ball handler who doesn’t read the court well when he’s dribbling. There’s just not a whole lot special about him. Maybe a second rounder.

steven27Participanthe is shoot is getting more consistant…and ball handling is way better already…he got a nba body i think he will be a 2nd round pick(31-50) in 2015

SiggyParticipantI like Geron Johnson more as an NBA prospect. I think he has legit 3rd guard potential because he has the ability to defend both guard positions. He’s athletic, has length and a strong build. He can handle the ball, slash and make plays. Shot the ball ok (35% from 3) and could improve with better shot selection. Needs to improve his decision making but I think he could be a solid bench player. He’s gotta keep his head on straight though. His history might scare some teams off.
