I thought it was very interesting that George Karl has written a book talking about his years in Denver and absolutely threw Carmelo, K-mart and JR Smith under the bus.  Let me say that those Denver teams he had were some of my favorite teams to watch with their athleticim and explosiveness.  They made it to the conference finals in 2004 where they lost to the Lakers.  Oddly enough I believe this is the only time Melo has ever made it out of the first round of the playoffs.  Karl said Melo had no commitment to defense and I think he called either K-mart or JR Smith’s "possee" distracting.  What’s even more itneresting is Kenyon Martin’s repsone to these things said by Karl.  He called Karl a coward, said he was the worst coach he ever played for and other eye-opening things.  It’s obvious the relationship Karl had with his star players in Denver was not good.  What do you guys think about Karl saying these things and K-mart and JR Smith’s rebuttal?

George Karl also had a massive conflict with DeMarcus Cousins during his last coaching stint. The man’s a respected coach, but he has had big problems handling star players and doesn’t seem to care much about his image anymore.

What a terrible person trying to make money from talking about a person like that. Even if it’s true which it probably is. Just keep it to your self. Must be full of hate. Not a way to live. Good for melo taking the high road.

I don’t doubt that what Karl wrote about these players is true, but isn’t that the challenge that you know you’re getting into when you’re an NBA coach? Don’t you know going in that the difficulty of juggling egos and instilling discipline and a willingness to embrace the less glamorous aspects of the game is what great coaches such a scarce commodity?

For K Mart to say he is the worst coach he has ever played for is bold.  And somewhere Byron Scott is sitting with his arms folded, smirking.

Yikes, I said conference finals in 2004.  That waa dumb, the Lakers played the T-Wolves in the conference finals in 2004.  I think it was 2009 the Nuggets were in the conference finals.  My bad.

Even though KMart has never been known as an upstanding person, George Karl just doesn’t look good here. And for someone who always says he’s tired of talking about Melo, he sure talks about him a lot

    Hype Machine

George Karl and the Hype Machine have a lot in common.

We’re both 70-something white males who have burned every bridge in our chosen profession and are relying on creating headlines from past glory to remain relevent.

But that book sounds seriously shite. I wouldnt be surprised if the view count from my Xmas day pickem thread outnumbers the total sales of George Karls book.

Rumor has it that Santa purchased all unsold copies and plans to give them to kids who have been misbehaving all year.

Most of these coaches sound like borderline-psychopathic egomaniacs.

    Might be some exceptions…

Not being able to handle "egos" and being a coach is like being an accountant and not being able to handle money.  Kinda comes with the territory.

And, X’s and O’s guys get me too.  It’s BASKETBALL. Not tick-tack-toe.

Ok, get the x’s and o’s.  Then when that doesn’t work give the guys some artistic freedom…

Probably anyone who wants to coach shouldn’t be a coach…

Well, if Karl had any hope of getting another job with the NBA (coaching, broadcasting, etc.) you can consider that door officially closed now.

Was there truth to what he said? Absolutely. Was Carmelo Anthony a ball hog who didn’t always give full effort on defense? Absolutely. Was jr Smith immature and entitled? Absolutely. Was Kenyon Martin a tough player to coach? Absolutely. Could Karl have been more patient and relatable as a coach? Absolutely. However, despite all the differences they were actually some pretty consistently good teams throughout Karl’s tenure. Don’t forget Iverson was there for a couple years too. I’d be interested to see what Karl wrote about him in his book. It’s a shame that he can’t just let bygones be bygones and has to throw them under the bus to attempt to sell books.

The only thing I will say is that I would be interested to read Karl’s comments in the full context of the book. Sometimes when you just take certain comments and blow them up out of context they tend to sound much worse. I doubt I will be buying the book though.
