Report is that raptors new gm wants to move Gay’s contract. Cleveland has the cap space to absorb him, and his contact expires in time to make their run at LeBron. Cleveland just drafted Bennett, and although he can play 3, if they wanted a full time 3, they would have taken Porter. I feel Bennett is a pf, and Cleveland plans to use him as such, making Tristan Thompson expendable. Keep in mind, all trade proposals they made this summer included Thompson. Maybe they feel they need to move him bc of any hard feelings on his end. Thompson, being from Toronto, will make a great front court with Jonas V. What are the chances these teams talk trade?

Also, what are your feelings on trading Thompson?

I think Gay would give them one too many scorers. They have Dion Waiters already as a wing scorer, Anthony Bennett to score from all over, and Kyrie Irving is a superb scorer for a PG. They could do with more of a glue guy SF rather than a scorer.

Agreed with B_Ball fan, which is why Otto Porter looked like a solid pick at #1 if they chose to draft him.

Rudy Gay has a player option for $19.3 million in 2014-15. The standard move would be to decline it in favor of a longer, secure contract, but given how he’s fallen out of flavor with GMs who favor analytics (a quickly growing trend in the league) he might take that ghastly amount of $ before getting a new contract. What he’s worth after next season or 2015 will be interesting.

Basically, too risky of a situation for Cleveland to eat up their cap room like that. I also thought when Bennett was drafted it didn’t have to mean he was going to be a full-time 3. He could play both the 3 and the 4 while Cleveland looks to shop Thompson.

I feel like y’all are putting too much on Bennett.. I don’t see him as a starter for a long time if ever.. I mean look how long it too Paul Milsap to become a full time starter..

Tristan Thompson is great and should the their PF going forward. I think they chose Bennett to provide depth and a nice player on their second unit for this year. They don’t expect him to be a stater. I think he was the lowest risk player in their mind and they chose him to avoid a bust..

Also, Thompson can play C for 10ish min a night next to Bennett and the other 14-15 min he isn’t in the game will go to Bennett so there is plenty of PT available at the PF spot.. I mean as much as I love Kevin Jones, he was getting burn for the Cavs and you know that means they are weak in the post..

One last thing, both guys are Canadian. I would think it would cause them to bond a little bit and possibly look out for each other and in turn, look out for what’s best for the team. They could have great chemistry.

That being said, I don’t think they should make a move for Gay.. He is not what this team needs to keep moving forward.

I don’t think that Chris Grant would trade Thompson for Gay straight up. Matter of fact there is no way.

He only does lopsided deals and Gay’s contract is begging to go in a lopsided deal. TO would have to throw in a lot of other assets. The other problem is TT is a Rich Paul client (I think his first official client) and trading him doesn’t help bring Lebron back another Rich Paul client (clearly thy most important client). TT also sat right next to the Heat bench a couple times in the finals in the front row.

A young solid guy that you can control for at least the next 2 (rookie contract) to 6 years (restrict year, QO year or 4 year ext) for one year at 19 million dollars of Rudy Gay is not happening. Plus Gay can’t be extented before the deal because after next year he will take a huge pay cut. Gay will be 28 then and looking at no more than 11 or 12 a season depending on what Iggy gets this year and how that looks at the end of the season.

As a Raptor fan I don’t mind trading Rudy Gay as long as we get a 1st round pick for this coming year’s draft.

Maybe what Cleveland did with the Clippers by getting Baron Davis, they were able to get a 1st round pick in return which turned out to be Kyrie Irving. Now I’m hoping the Raptors will be able trade Rudy Gay near the deadline and get a 1st round pick and hopefully we win the lottery and draft Andrew Wiggins!

The problem is that if any team knows not to be on the wrong side of that deal its the Cavs. They know they committed robbery and now no team in the league since that trade has traded a completely unprotected first round pick until I believe this latest Boston and Nets trade. That trade made the protected boom happen. The Cavs would never do that and spent this whole draft trying to acquire a 2014 first round pick.

First the Raptors new GM need to concentrate on trying to move Andreas Bargani contract before anything. Second, why would the raptors trade gay for Tristian Thompson, who plays similar to Amir Johnson?
