"There’s been talk that the Bobcats might be willing to move the No. 2 pick to Memphis in a package for small forward Rudy Gay, but according to sources, it’s just been talk. “It seems the rumors about Gay (being on the trading block) are true,” one source said. “And the Bobcats are one team that could take on his salary. But a trade would be complicated.”

Doesn’t seem that complicated to me. Per the craziness of draft day/max salary player deals, this one would seem to make a good amount of sense. the Bobcats can absorb Gay’s entire salary, but if they can’t, the inevitable amnestying of Maggette or Tyrus Thomas would make more than enough room.

The Bobcats would be a getting an elite SF who’s putting up 20 and 6 and plays very good defense. He would be the go-to scorer and athletic defensive presence they needed on the wing all year, and at 25, Gay could grow with this team just like anyone they would have taken at #2. They could rent a PF like Antawn Jamison for 1-2 years to mold these guys and suddenly you have a dangerous lineup in Kemba-Henderson-Gay-Jamison-Biyombo. Assuming they amnesty Thomas at some point, Kemba/Gay/Biyombo would be their only contracts on the books after this season. That’s a nice core (guard, wing, big) with almost too much money to spend. They are not in love with anyone at #2 so if they can grab a young guy like Guy who’s entering his prime and shines on both ends, go for it.

The Grizzlies have proven that they can be just as good, if not better without Gay. They are a small market team and already have $30M committed to 2 other frontcourt starters next year, plus Conley’s locked down for $25M over the next three years. They are definitely entertaining the idea of extending Mayo. Ridding themselves of $54M over the next three years in favor of Kidd-Gilchrist (a perfect fit in Memphis) for $20M over the next 4 years should seem much more palatable.

I still couldn’t see a team that is better than them, but maybe they would be better to watch than last year. The Bobcats need lottery picks, but they are obviously not selling many tickets with the buy one season ticket and get next seasons free so maybe its not that horrible of an idea. Besides its not like they won’t be right back in the lottery next year so they can start the rebuilding process around Gay. If I were them I would draft Robinson and start from there.

 It sounds good but I don’t think it makes much sense for Charlotte. He is 25 now but by the time they are competitive again he will be closer to 30 with about 10 years on him. Meaning they won’t be competitive for another 3 or 4 years. Just take the hit and build this team like OKC did with theirs. If you want to trade that pick, trade it to Portland for their lotto picks.

Rich Cho needs to be fired on the spot if he goes thropugh with this trade. Rudy Gay is awful. He’s not a team player and totally ruined MEM chemistry in the playoffs. Plus, his contract is digusting. You gotta take the #2 pick on the rookie contract over Gay.

Sorry, when I said "dangerous" I didn’t mean "danger for Miami," I meant they could cause problems for any team on a nightly basis. Walker, Henderson and Gay bring a lot of athleticism/energy and intensity and they all D-up hard on every possession. And they can all definitely score. Jamison proved he is still capable of putting up 17 a game and couple spread the floor well and provide some guidance. Biyombo is an awesomely long and athletic defender who’s already proved that he’s capable of blocking crazy shots. Not a playoff team but they’ll have the pieces in place to both compete night in and night out next year while still having huge growing room for the future.

I don’t see how this is bad for Charlotte. Gay is young (25) and an excellent talent (up there with anyone in this draft after AD), and he’s clearly more of a sure thing.

It’s bad for Memphis. They’re a contender right now. Without Gay they have a gaping hole at SF… and they don’t have time to wait on a prospect. Fundamentally this trade doesn’t make sense for them.

Gay didn’t play very well in the playoffs. But overall he’s a great player who just needs to refine his shot selection and style of play.

If I was Memphis, I’d look at possibly getting older instead of younger.

e.g. Celtics decide to blow it up and you trade Rudy Gay for Paul Pierce.

Imagine that scenario for Memphis. They’d almost certainly draft MKG IMO, they’d resign Mayo. Good idea for them. Not sure why Charlotte would do it. Sure, it would make them more competitive, but it doesn’t do much for them long term.

i don’t like barnes that much but id rather draft him than to swap for gay. barnes is younger and could provide the scoring gay will bring.  bobcats can move down to 4th pick and get either mkg,trob or barnes. trob is kinda small sized, i hope pistons move up and get him. /ot . why does sullinger drops so far on the board……

Its a decent idea if your’re abandoning the rebuilding process that they already started and I’m sure Rudy is trying to compete in the playoffs rather than struggle to win 15 games. I wouldn’t suggest it. Take MKG and attempt to trade some other pieces like Tyrus and DJ Augustine. Amnesty Maggette (no one wants him)

JrbenzCuse23, the argument is not whether Gay is better than whoever the Bobcats get at two. It’s whether the Bobcats should try and build to the future rather than try to win more next year. Obviously Gay would improve the Bobcats, but would they be a playoff team?

I’m curious though, if MKG is at least two levels below Gay, then what does that translate statistically because I see these blanket statements about players every day. It doesn’t make them true. MKG has a world of potential if he can develop his jumper.

 Even if he develops a jumper he will not be Rudy Gay. Rudy = 6-8 elite athleticism, elite defense, pure stroke. You dont see anybody saying MKG will turn into a Rudy Gay. Im just saying you act like hes old 25 is not un-buildaroundable. Jeremy Lamb could potentially carry a team even scouts are saying MKG would be bad fit with bobcats, he needs a better team. This deal doesn’t make sense for the Bobcats. There’s a reason MJ blew up the team that made the playoffs. It was to officially go into rebuidling mode.

Keep the #2 pick and pay him rookie money. Don’t trade for Gay, who’s overpaid and overrated. Let Memphis find another sucker.

Memphis owner Micheal Heisley told a local paper this morning that the rumors of trading Rudy was started by the media..And he wasnt looking to trade 1 of his core guys..He said he held true to his statements while he promised to resign Gasol,Rudy,Randolph & Conley and will hold true to his statement of not trading Rudy..And he also said nobody in this draft can come in right away next year and give you what Rudy Gay can..He said he’ll love to move up higher in the draft and select a player,but it wouldnt be by using 1 of his ”core guys”..

He said he’s aware of the financial situation the team is in ..And want to make a run next year with everyone healthy,then look into trades…Our GM Chris Wallace will work to keep their ”core guys” intact, while still adding to improve the roster…

I’m a Memphis season ticket holder and know fans in Memphis wouldnt be happy trading the team’s most popular player for some unproven rookie..Of course this trade news is coming from ”Bandwagon Jumpers”..If Memphis were in the Finals..”The BandWagon Jumpers” would be saying he’s a top 10 player and asking who is better Rudy Gay or Durant?

Grizzly fans feel the team will be taking a step back,by getting rid of Rudy for the 2nd pick and some of Charlotte players nobody wants….It’ll take anyone drafted at number 2, about 2 or 3 years before they reach they’re potential..And Memphis is 1 of 2 roster additions from joining OKC as the 2 up & coming teams in the west..Memphis is finally selling out and years of playing in almost empty arena..While the Tigers were drawing larger crords..The Grizzlies are now selling out almost every night and the talk of the city after years of being 2nd fiddle to the University of Memphis Tigers..
