I think he is a NBA player. That a team can plug in to defend any guard. He is a strong compact superior athlete at likely 6’4ft, and 6’8 wingspan. Isn’t as fluid and fast like his father the Glove, but is stronger with more hops also left handed.

He is passive offensively, and needs to be more aggressive. However, he shows a good jumper with nice form. He has solid handles and vision to run an offense.

The NBA is where a player is made with his ability to defend, if he isn’t a five star player. High school super stars aren’t most of the time asked to defend. Then get exposed at the next level, and coaches won’t trust them on the floor until that changes.

Tony Allen, Jimmy Butler, Loul Deng and Avery Bradley weren’t the most skilled players. But teams can always trust them on the floor because what they brought defensively. Hopefully, some can progress like Jimmy Butler and others have given time.

Averages 8 boards a game too. For a guard, that’s impressive. I’d love to see him paired in a backcourt with another guard who can score, so he isn’t forced to do much offensively besides maybe some initiation and floor spacing, with an improved jumper. I’d like to see Portland get their hands on him. A rotation of Lillard-McCollum-Payton would be a fun young core to watch develop.

I’d like to add, I don’t think Payton is realistically going to be anything more than a deep bench player. I’m moreso just infatuated with the athleticism he put on display with that one dunk, with his namesake, and of course his blue-collar game; getting boards and being a defensive stopper. He’s the type of player I’d like to see play along Dame in Portland. Matthews is about to get paid, and if Portland doesn’t at least make it to the WCF, they might not be willing to put that money on the line for him. Especially with RoLo due for a pay day as well.
