surveParticipantSome of you may remember my posts on Defense and 1st Option mentality under my "For All You Hoopers" posts.
I was just thinking about when I played in HS and now I see part of the reason why I was a role player. I didnt have a very high BBIQ. I was a good shooter and a good passer. In practice and pick up games I thought I was a good all-around player with decent IQ…but when I played organized ball in actual games, I remember now that I had poor IQ when I come to think of it.
In my previous posts, I implied that defense and 1st option type game areas much mentality as ability. The base word of IQ automatically suggests different in this situation. In game situations, its much different and you are forced into a role….whether it is scoring, shooting, defense, etc….
At the HS level that I played at, you had to play your role and when I think back on it…I couldve played my role and stepped up my IQ a bit too. I believe IQ comes with being relaxed and comfortable with working behind your strengths. It definitely is a natural ability and is enhanced by experience.
IQ is soooooo important, not only when playing unselfish basketball but one on one play as well. Half court play is really where IQ is honed. I remember playing pick up along side other guys who were young and athletic and getting the sh!t kicked out of our azzes by old, fat, slow guys with 2" verticals at the YMCA. The old guys at the Y had all the fundamentals for one…they could pass, they knew how to block out for boards, run screens and would absolutely murder us on backdoors.
You need more than IQ to succeed on the next level, but sometimes, IQ can keep you playing for a long time. Andre Miller is a perfect example, his durability and IQ have lended to him having a great NBA career despite him not being an elite athlete on that level.
IQ definitely is synonomous with team play I believe. How much of IQ is mental? How much is natural?
thoughts….?

Penny Jr.ParticipantWrd, I agree in high-skool ball I was like the 6th man on the team, and I always felt like I was way better than the person starting ahead of me… But, now that I look back I did lack the IQ to play organized ball at a high level, its crazy cuz I could completely dominate my peers and people on my team easyily and I was always was told I should start over some people on my team… I played a pg/sg role on my team but mostly pg… I jus remember in games I would tend to feel lost and lose swagger and sometime get a little out of control and than I couldnt focus on the on making the right choice now, I kinda feel like my BBIQ was the reason I couldnt translate my street game to organized ball… But, the person that I always nows play for a private skool basketball team and football youu can look him up his name is Devin Scott-Stith he has a couple of articles on him I cant lie he was a beast but I could always smash him when where not in games and I was like the only one in practice that could hang with him… But, yea I think 1st option mentaily plays a role in this I always had the jitters b4 games and it threw me off a little, its defintely a certain mind set you have to prefrom on the next level or any organized basketball to succeed, but althetics abilities are also a great reason why some ppl have success but they atleast have to have somewhat of a IQ

TallmanNYCParticipantIt is tough to develop a good understanding of the game if they guys you are playing with don’t have it either. You can run backdoor cuts all you want, but if the PG is showboating up at the three point line and just looking for his own shot, then your backdoor cut isn’t going to do any good. You’ve basically got to have 3 or 4 guys on the floor who know what they are doing or else it is just guys looking out for their own shot. You’ve also got to have some shooters on the floor or else a lot of the basic basketball plays don’t work. Doing the right thing about finding the open man and rotating the ball doesn’t work if it just ends up in the hands of a brickartist. That is why it is hard to learn the game playing streetball. And growing up you’ve got to find your way into games with older guys who know what they are doing.

surveParticipantexactly! I just couldnt understand why the coaches would never give me the shot I felt I deserved. I always thought that I was better than other guys who were in front of me, I just thought I needed more opportunity to showcase my overall game. You make an excellent point because fundamentally, I was more sound…had better handle and shot than a lot of other guys I played with or against. Some of them just had ugly games. Looking back, my feel for the game was terrible…for one, because I was used to overpowering guards of my size or getting into the lane…once I started playing against bigger players, I really wasnt crafty enough or had the IQ on offense or defense to be much of a threat.
and about the jitters, I always had them too, which usually caused me to force the game and force what I felt was my strong point (outside shooting) as opposed to playing solid d and getting my teammates involved…..because I never wanted the coach to take me out.
IQ is VERY underrated. especially coming from streetball to organized.

how true. lol. we were all more interested in making the spectacular play, even when passing, just couldnt be a standard pass, had to be mustard and relish on it.

Penny Jr.ParticipantYea, surve I feel you… for me it felt like I was limited to what I could do in the time that I was given on the court but I was given the chances a couple of time but could never live up to my expections I knew I was a way better than I could be I was just missing something… I wasnt trash I know i was the most consisted off the bench I would say I would give the a good 6pt-10pts off the bench sometimes I would go off for 12-16pt which was a lot to me, when I look back the thing that keep from being a starter was that I was missing intangables that some of my peers had even, though my skill(Ball-handling, Gettin the lane, Setting up others, and speed) were good for my position I still couldnt beat out the players that knew where to be and just the little stuff for some reason… I wasnt basketball dumb I jus wasnt up to par with my basketball IQ to be a full time starter, iam pretty sure my talent was recongized it just didnt show up during game time my, coach was constantly on my a**… But, to be honest I couldnt be out a 6’1 to 6’2 guard the tallest person on are at pg, the only position was left was the sg and i was defiently a way better player and was always told by the other starters I should start the coaches never considered it though idk why… but it was times were I completely go stagnt in games and unnotice but for me it was easy to get pass my defenders without even having to use a crossover or anything(I crossed some many people in my high schoold days, my friends would always tell me after the game I wouldnt notice unless somebody told me… To wrap this up my weakness were horrible tho I couldnt hold defense good enough but Idk why I couldnt I could easyly shut down my oppents in streetball, I just never understood defensive in organized ball, I was turnover prone not bad passes but stuff like traveling that used to kill me, I couldnt shoot a lick, I never bothered to a take a shot in a organized game, for some odd reason I was scared to shot but it felt like if I miss it would jepordize my playin time even more overall I took a total of like 5 outside shot other wise i try to go to the rack most the time, I struggled breakin down 2-3 zones and presses, and all that stuff has to do with BBIQ… i.e. I was a great playground shooter when I got on a role I couldnt be stopped but it never translated in real game sitiuations…. my bad for making this long I just always wanted to tell ppl how I feel about my game and others perspective

surveParticipantyeah, when I first played organized ball, zone confused the phuck outta me. didnt even seem like real basketball from what I was used to. thats when I learned that organized ball takes a lot more than physical tools.

JoeWolf1I think for a high school player I had a pretty good Bball IQ, but it’s not nearly as high as it is now. I notice some bad habits I had as a younger player that I know better than to do now
IQ is just a part of your game that is going to improve as you continue to play and watch basketball and if you played in high school or organized ball it’s really going to improve. I’ve played with guys for years who never played organized ball, are good players and are lights out shooters because they’ve been playing for years, but they’ve only played pick up games so their BBall IQ isn’t as high as a lot of guys who did played some HS or college. I’m not saying guys who never played organized ball don’t have high BBall IQ’s but that when you have to practice running an offense day in and day out for years then you have more of a feel for it.
I think very little natural, but your guys who have really high Bball IQ just play and watch more basketball. Even if they are the same age, the guy with the higher IQ has put in more work watching games and doing the extra work.
